Youth learn about selection, care, and feeding of livestock, animal health, and importance of good record keeping. Emphasis for these projects continues to be focused on life skill development. The goal of the Ohio 4-H Animal Science Program is to develop and foster life skills through positive interactions with others; to teach scientific principles of Animal Science to young people and to increase the awareness of animal industry issues among youth. Animal clinics sponsored by OSU Extension give youth and adults the opportunity to build upon skills in their respective project area. Participants learn in a fun environment about various topics such as nutrition, health, reproduction, and grooming and showing skills. I hope our 4-H youth, parents and advisors will take full advantage of learning more about raising and showing a livestock project by attending our July 9 clinics at the Monroe County Fairgrounds. We can always learn something new or pick up a new trick of the trade. Don t forget our motto: To Make the Best Better. So ask yourself, What am I doing this year to improve my project knowledge and skills as a 4-H member? Sincerely, Cheryl Goodrich Extension Educator 4-H Youth Development July 2016 Issue

2 Members must attend Special Interest Project Judging to have their project scored so they can be eligible to purchase a Junior Fair pass. At judging, members will be interviewed by a judge who will look at the project and ask questions about things the member has learned. The judge will score the project as Superior, Excellent, or Good. State Fair Qualifiers and Alternates and Award Winners will be selected from members attending Judging Day, not from those attending make-up judging. Posters for judging should be no larger than a ½ sheet of poster board. The time that your project will be judged is included in this July 4-H Express Newsletter. *Make-up Judging* To attend Make-up Judging members must submit a written letter of request explaining why make-up judging is needed. All letters are due Tuesday, July 5 to the Extension Office. The 4-H Committee will review letters for approval or disapproval. *State Fair Qualification* Projects in your 4-H Member Handbook marked with an asterisk(*) are eligible to go to the state fair. If a project is eligible for State Fair, qualifiers and alternates will be selected from 4-H members receiving Superior ratings. State Fair qualifiers and alternates will be chosen from members attending Special Interest Project Judging Day, not from those attending make-up judging. *Project Awards* For each Special Interest Project judged on Tuesday, July 12 at the Coulson Building, a maximum of two awards may be given: Outstanding of the Day and Honorable Mention. Outstanding of the Day winners will be selected from projects receiving a Superior rating. Award winners will be recognized with rosettes. 4-H members must participate in Animal Project Judging or make-up judging to be eligible to exhibit an animal at the Monroe County Fair and to purchase a Junior Fair Pass. The schedule for project judging is printed in the July 4-H Express Newsletter. *What Do I Take?* Special Interest Project Judging - Tuesday, July 12 Monroe County Fairgrounds - Animal Project Interviews & Skillathon Judging - Tuesday, July 26 - Swiss Hills 1. Completed project record book - signed by your advisor!!! *Skillathons* Specific skillathon activities are listed on the following pages and you can download study sheets from the website at If you do not have internet access, you can also pick up skillathon study sheets at the Extension Office prior to judging day. *Interview* After you have completed the skillathon, you will be interviewed by a judge who will ask questions relating to your project. Possible topics for questions include: Nutrition & Feeding, General Knowledge, Management & Health, Selection, Showing & Fitting, and Record Keeping. During the interview, your project book will be reviewed for completion of learning activities, required records and questions. Your book will be returned to you before you leave. *Scoring* Your total project score will be calculated from the following: skillathon (25 points), interview (50 points), project book (15 points), and appropriate dress/appearance (10 points). This combined score will determine the overall rating of Superior ( points), Excellent (80-89 points), or Good (79 points or below). Receiving a judging score of 64 points or less will cause the project to be scored as Incomplete. Members who receive a score of Incomplete will be required to correct their issues and come to Make-up Judging (or another judging appointment) in order to receive a passing score. Members who do not come to the second judging or receive a passing score will not be eligible to exhibit at the fair or receive a fair pass. *Project Awards* Skillathon Award- Each 4-H member who receives a perfect score on their skillathon activities will receive a Skillathon Award and will be recognized with a rosette. Outstanding Project Knowledge Award- Any member who receives a perfect overall judging score will receive an Outstanding Project Knowledge Award and will be recognized with a plaque during the Monroe County Fair. If no member in a particular species receives a perfect score, the member with the highest score in that project will receive the Outstanding Project Knowledge Award. *Make-up Judging* To attend Make-up Judging, members must submit a written letter of request explaining why make-up judging is needed. All letters are due by Tuesday, July 5 to the Extension Office. The 4-H Committee will review letters for approval or disapproval. 12 OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION Adopt-A-Cabin Refurbishment Campaign The 4-H Camp Piedmont Board has a goal of refurbishing all 14 cabins at the camp. The cabins have had new lighting and windows recently installed, but are still in need of many upgrades. Camp Piedmont is asking each of the 8 counties who use the camp to Adopt-A-Cabin. The cost to refurbish a single cabin is $5,000. Refurbishment will include: New roof, walls, floors, ceilings, and doors. Contractors will be doing work under the leadership of the Maintenance Manager, John Gardner. The Monroe County 4-H Committee would like to raise and donate $5,000 for a cabin. The committee is encouraging 4-H clubs to participate by making donations to the Cabin Campaign. If funds collected exceed $5,000, the remaining funds will be used to help fund another cabin. The committee would like to have all donations by August 31 st. The 4-H Committee is challenging each Monroe County 4-H club to raise and donate at least $300 to the cabin campaign. This can be counted as Community Service for those clubs making a donation. Clubs can be creative in terms of fundraising: they may make a contribution from their club treasury, hold a fundraiser with proceeds dedicated to the Cabin Campaign, collect donations, etc. Here are a few suggestions to get you started: Collect pocket change Have a club yard sale Collect and sell aluminum cans Hold a bake sale Set up a smoothie stand Do a bucket brigade Hold a pet wash Sponsor an outdoor movie night Hold an ice cream social Have a pancake breakfast Host a sporting competition Organize a baby/kids item sale Set up a hot dog stand Collect printer cartridges, old cell phones, etc Hold a pie baking contest & auction The possibilities are endless!
