1 Stearns County General 4-H Horse Project Information 1. ENROLL in the 4-H Horse Project and Horse Training if you want, either online or paper. By May 15 to show at the current year s fair. 2. HORSE IDs and Lease forms MUST BE TURNED IN BY MAY 15 EVERY YEAR!!!! If you do not have your IDs turned in by May 15 th you cannot show that horse at fair! If you are unsure which horse you want to bring u should ID all of them in question. 3. You cannot show at the Fair or any 4H event if you DO NOT have a CURRENT COGGINS for your horse. You can upload them to the 4-H website, mail or hand deliver them to the extension office. Your horse will not be allowed in the barn if we do not have the current coggins at the time of check in at Fair. 4. Anita will have to know how many horses you intend to bring to fair (around May/June) in order to figure out tack stalls and locations for everyone. There will be 2-3 people Per Tack Stall so plan accordingly. Also the fair board will NOT be providing and Shavings/Straw this year, but there will be some available on the grounds to purchase. 5. ACHIEVEMENT BOOKS - You need to have a minimum of a half level completed by fair. If you are trying for a State Horse show trip you need to have one complete level finished. We encourage everyone to bring their book to the May/June meetings so it can be reviewed and signed off on. (If you are doing training you must complete at least through that level in the achievement book as well) 6. Training Books must be completed and signed off before competing in training, be prepared to demonstrate and explain everything in ALL levels through the one you are competing in. You must supply all equipment (lunge line, bridle, saddle, halter etc.) used in the level competing in. You may want to have a friend there to help you hold stuff for while you are in the ring competing. 7. Camping / Hotels during fair if you want to camp at fair (tent or camper) you will want to get in touch with Anita ASAP as spots fill up fast! She will be able to answer any questions you have as far as pricing, locations, availability etc. If you would rather stay in a hotel near the fairgrounds you will want to book that ASAP as well since there are only a couple nearby. You are of course more than welcome to drive back and forth each day but your horse MUST STAY on the fairground until 6 pm Sunday night! a. Regardless of where you stay during fair you must arrange for someone to care for your horse if you will not be there to do it yourself (clean stalls, water, feed, hay etc) 8. Please remember to dress appropriately while at fair (and all 4H events for that matter) we want to set good examples for all youth everywhere. 9. Number of Fundraisers & Meetings - Silver Spurs Horse or Golden Horseshoes will pay the State Horse show fees for the club participants as long as there are sufficient funds in the account to cover the horse show and all expenses have been paid and the following criteria has been met: PLEASE see your club leaders for current criteria a. 2 If there are not sufficient funds to cover the cost of the State Horse show fees the 4-H participant will pay the fees associated with participating at the horse show. Or if the 4-H participant does not meet the requirements above they are required to pay their own fees to the State 4-H horse show. *You must have Graduated 6 th grade to be eligible for a State Trip* Note: if you accept a State Trip you are responsible for paying for your own fuel, food, lodging, shavings ect. The club only pays for the entry fees and stalls. 10. Check in for the fair is Wednesday, July 26th between noon and 5:00 pm. The vet will look over your horse and make sure they have a current coggins test BEFORE they will be allowed to go into the barn/stall. There will be NO Wednesday night horse show meeting. Your packets with numbers and other important information will be handed to you when you check in on Wednesday. If you arrive after 5:00 pm you will need to find the Vet to do the Vet check. Remember your horse must stay on the fairgrounds until 6pm Sunday night, no trailering back and forth each day!! 11. We usually have a Community Stall in the barn that will have the points posted, treats and refreshments for the 4Hers. We would like each 4-H member to bring a picture of themselves and their horse that can be posted on the stall. We would prefer a 5 x 7 picture if possible. We would also like to ask each family to donate a bag of candy so we can keep the candy bowl full this year. Please make sure the candy is individually wrapped. 12. We usually as ask the families to donate a case of water, Gatorade or some other type of refreshments we can keep in the coolers by the arena to keep the kids hydrated while they're showing. Please just bring it along to the fair and put them in the community stall. Please note this is a COMMUNITY cooler and open to anyone from any club. 13. In previous years we have gotten a Bonus trip this comes from writing an essay about our club and the state awards so many per year. So last year (in 2015) we had seven (7) State 4-H Horse Show trips and two (2) training trips. The kids vote each year to decide how the trips will be awarded between Pleasure, Games and All-Around. We don t know how many trips we have until June usually 14. If you get a state trip you have to turn in your records /resume to the extension office within a few days so if you are hoping to go to state it s not a bad idea to get a start on them. It s also very easy to add to them each year once you have them typed up. (they like to see pics in them as well) 15. You must show each horse you bring in a Showmanship class at fair. 16. COMMITTEES - Much of the work of the Silver Spurs & Golden Horsehoes will be carried on by committees. Adults and youth are encouraged to volunteer to work on these committees with adults volunteering as advisors. Presently standing committees are listed but other committees may be formed as needed. 3 b. Finance/Budget. This committee will consist of the out-going and in-coming treasurer and individuals selected by the PDC. They will serve for a period of one year. They shall make an audit of the treasurer s books by November 1 and at the completion of the audit present a written report to the PDC. Treasurer role must consist of one (1) youth treasurer and two (2) adult leaders. The signers on the signatory card at the bank must include all three names as signers. Neither of the adult leaders can be the treasurer s parent or guardian. The checking account should be set up so that all checks require two signatures, youth treasurer and adult leader. If outgoing Treasurer is attending college they are exempt from being on this committee. c. Fundraising Committee. The purpose of this committee is to organize and coordinated fundraisers with the approval of the Extension Office in accordance with fundraising guidelines as necessary for the Silver Spurs. d. Fair and Awards Committee. This is now handled by the PDC. e. Knowledge Bowl/Hippology/Horse Judging/Drill Team committee. The purpose of this committee is to organize the PDC members that want to compete at the annual knowledge bowl against other County Horse Project Groups. f. Clinics Committee. The purpose of this committee is to plan and organize hands on experiences for the youth in 4H g. Constitution and By-Laws Committee. h. Key Leaders ( ) i. Silver Spurs Sara Finken ii. 4 THINGS TO BRING TO FAIR HORSE HALTER AND LEAD ROPE SHAVINGS/STRAW HAY/GRAIN WATER BUCKET/STRAP GROMMING SUPPLIES SADDLE/BLANKET/BRIDLE EMERGENCY SUPPLY KIT GROOMING SUPPLIES: brushes, hoof pick, fly spray, rags, shampoo, hoof black or other supplies for showing if you want (clipper) SHEET and/or SLEAZY for your horse FORK OR SHOVEL/ BROOM(for cleaning out pen) FAN for your horse if needed, an extension cord and a way to fasten the fan to the stalls zip ties work well ***no hay nets we usually feed on the floor in the stall ***if you have a mini you may bring a baby gate to set in for the door as long as you are at the stall it is nice for the people to see 4-H ER BOOTS *HELMET* HAT (for showmanship) SHOW OUTFIT(s) Western and English if you re showing in both LONG SLEEVE SHIRT must have a collar (for games) JEANS (no rips or tears) SHOW NUMBER You will get these when you check in at Fair (While riding in the show you MUST put one on each side of your saddle pad) Any questions at all Feel free to call/text: Your Club leader
