Junior Fair Beef Cattle Rules Rules Specific to All Beef Cattle Projects Consult the Eligibility & General Rules for all Junior Fair Livestock Projects for additional Warren County Fair livestock rules. 1) All beef cattle projects must be 100% beef cattle parentage. 2) Mulch will be provided for stalling at a cost of $20 per head, payable with your fair entries. 3) No butt fans or misters permitted. Only overhead fans permitted with a maximum of one per animal. 4) A maximum of two grooming chutes per exhibitor permitted. Chutes may be placed in designated areas only and should be located in the general vicinity of your stalls. 5) No tents or awnings may be located in the barn or under the awning. Tents may be used for grooming only on show days and must be located at the outer edge of the blacktop. Tents must be properly secured for safety reasons and must be removed at the conclusion of the show. 6) Cattle pumps not permitted on the fairgrounds. The Senior Fair Board reserves the right to inspect show boxes for the presence of cattle pumps and disqualification from the show and sale can occur to exhibitors violating this rule. 7) No pigmented grooming aids or materials. 8) For safety reasons, no switching of halters or adding rope halters on cattle at or near the exit gate from the show ring. All cattle must return to their stall wearing the halter that was used for the show. 9) Cattle must remain in continual control of their handlers, when not tied. Cattle may not be released in the show ring or make-up pen for exercise. Breeding Cattle 1) All heifers must be registered to show in the British Breeds Division. Registration numbers must be included on the entry form or they will be entered as a crossbred and will show in the Continental Division. Registration papers must be brought to the fair and can be inspected by fair personnel. 2) Heifers must be registered in the exhibitor s name at least 60 days prior to the fair to be eligible to show in a breed class during the Junior show. 3) Junior Fair breeding cattle will be divided into two divisions, British Breeds & Continental Breeds. Breeds within the each division will show together, against each other in the same class. 4) Exhibitors may enter and show a maximum of two animals per class in the Junior show. a. British Breeds Division (Must be registered according to the rules listed above to show in this division) i. Angus ii. Hereford iii. Shorthorn & Shorthorn Plus b. Continental Breeds Division (Include breed & registration number on your entry form, if applicable)

Other Registered Breed (please list on entry form) 5) Classes will be divided using the following age classifications: Class 1 Junior Calf (Jan. 1 to April 30, 2018) Class 2 Senior Calf (Sept. 1 to Dec. 31, 2017) Class 3 Summer Yearling (May 1 to August 31, 2017) Class 4 Junior Yearling (Jan. 1 to April 30, 2017) Class 5 Senior Yearling (Sept. 1 to Dec. 31, 2016) Market Beef 1) Market beef must have been born on or after January 1, ) Each exhibitor may check-in and tag a maximum of three market beef at the December tagging day. Two market beef are the maximum that may be shown at the Warren County Fair. Market beef may be steers or heifers. 3) For initial tagging, steers must be castrated and all market beef must be haltered, green broke and must be able to be led to the scales. 4) All market beef must be dehorned to participate in the show and sale. Specific definition for market beef is less than 1½ inches of horn/scur above the surface of the hide. 5) Market heifers are eligible to show and sell at the Warren County Fair. There will not be a separate class for market heifers. They will show in the same classes with the market steers. Heifers tagged in as a market project will be ineligible to show in any breeding show, including the open class show, at the 2018 Warren County Fair. Market heifers will be tattooed at the December tagging day. County-Born Market Beef Eligibility Rules 1) County-born market beef must be one, two or all three of the exhibitor s market animals brought to tagging in December. 2) Market animals must have been produced by a cow owned by a Warren County cattle producer and the cow must calve in Warren County. In the case of embryo calves, the recipient cow must be owned by a Warren County cattle producer, the recipient cow must calve in the county and the calf must be owned at birth by a Warren County cattle producer. 3) Exhibitors must submit a county-born market beef registration form into the OSU Extension office by 4:30 p.m. on December 1, Exception: Feeder calves purchased from the 2017 Warren County Fair sale with a 100 or 300 fair tag do not need to be registered, since county-bred paperwork is already filed with the OSU Extension office. 4) Market animals must have an ear tag matching their registration form (or their 100 or 300 Warren County Fair tag) to be eligible to be tagged as county born at the December tagging day. 5) Fair officials reserve the right to inspect cows and calves to verify location, ownership & existence. 6) To be eligible to show in a county-born class, the animal must be shown in the regular show. Weight Requirements & Show Classes Weigh-In: Monday, July 16 10:30 a.m. Minimum Weight: 1000 lbs. Maximum Weight: None

4 No re-weighs are permitted. Underweight steers are not eligible to show or sell and must be removed from the fairgrounds by 10:00 p.m. on Monday, July 16 th. Market steers will be shown by weight in three divisions. Classes will be divided as evenly as possible at the discretion of the show committee. County-born market steers will be shown by weight with no divisions. Performance & Carcass Contest OPTIONAL Contest Sponsored by the Warren County Cattlemen s Association 1) This is optional contest. Participation is not required. 2) Open to all market beef. No entry required on your fair entry form. 3) Market projects will have ultrasound measurements for carcass data done on Friday, July 20 th at 9:00 a.m. Cost to the exhibitor is $5 per steer, payable prior to the steer being scanned. Note: Actual cost is $10 plus the cost of the ultrasound technician. The Warren County Cattlemen s Association will cover the additional cost. 4) To be eligible for awards, exhibitors must permit a strip of hair to be shaved on your animal to measure for quality grade. Exhibitors not allowing their animal to be shaved may still have back fat and ribeye area measured, but they are ineligible to compete for awards. 5) Contest ranking based on value added per day on feed with ties broken using average daily gain. 6) Award winners will be announced on Friday at 4:00 p.m. 7) Plaques will be awarded to the top five steers. No adjustments to sale order will be made for the winners. 8) For complete details, consult the contest flyer which is available from the OSU Extension office. Feeder Calves 1) Feeder calves must have been born on or after January 1, ) Steers or heifers may be shown. 3) Feeder calves must be weaned and on feed by June 1 st. 4) Each exhibitor may check-in and tag a maximum of two feeder calves at the June tagging day. Two feeder calves are the maximum that may be shown at the Warren County Fair. 5) Exhibitors will be charged a per head fee at tagging day to vaccinate your feeder calf. Vaccinations will be done by a licensed veterinarian. Vaccinations are required for all feeder calves to be eligible to show & sell at the fair. 6) For initial tagging on June 2 nd, feeder calves must be castrated, hornless (no horn/scur above the surface of the hide), halter broke and able to be led on tagging day or they will not be tagged and thus are ineligible for the fair. 7) Feeder calves will not be disqualified for horns during the fair, if they were hornless and passed inspection on tagging day. 8) Feeder heifers are not eligible to show in the Junior Fair breeding cattle show. County-Born Feeder Calf Eligibility Rules 1) County-born feeder calves must be one or both of the exhibitor s feeder calves brought to tagging in June. 2) Feeder calves must have been produced by a cow owned by a Warren County cattle producer and the cow must calve in Warren County. In the case of embryo calves, the recipient cow must be owned by a Warren

Underweight feeder calves are not eligible to show or sell and must be removed from the fairgrounds by 10:00 p.m. on Monday, July 16 th. Feeder calves will be shown by weight and classes will be divided as evenly as possible at the discretion of the show committee. Heifers and steers will show in separate classes with a Grand & Reserve Champion selected from all class winners and second place calves. Beef Herdsman Award This is an individual award to honor the Junior Fair exhibitor that does the best job in the following areas: Cleanliness of animals. Cleanliness of pens. Identification of animals by breed, sex & age and the owner s name and 4-H club affiliation. Cleanliness and orderliness of the area around the pen. Evidence that the animal is being properly fed and watered. Courteous and helpfulness to other exhibitors. The Herdsman Award will be selected by the Senior Beef Superintendent and presented at the Junior Fair sale on Saturday, July 21 st. Final Update March 2018
