Throughout this year, we hope that you all see what 4-H Grows because of our Awesome Volunteer Leaders, but the involvement of parents in their child s projects and activities is just as important. All 4-H members are leaders in the community. We are excited to begin working with our new and returning 4-H members. We look forward to a fun September 27 Officer Training in Terrebonne Parish 4-H. A child who is actively involved allowed to participate in Parish 4-H Events, Activities, filled and exciting year and can t wait to meet all of our October 1 Seafood and Rice Cookery October 4 Junior Leader Meeting in 4 -H will gain leadership skills, citizenship skills, and life skills. 4-H members will make many friends and memories throughout the year. We and Contests throughout the year regardless of their project book chosen. Please remember that good conduct is Terrebonne Parish 4-H members! We are asking Terrebonne Parish 4-H Members to be creative and enter the Pumpkin decorating Contest. Rules: 1 entry per member 1. Must be handmade by the 4-H member no store bought pumpkins (real or fake). 2. Must have the 4-H Clover on the pumpkin. 3. Pumpkin must not be larger than 8x11. It can be what ever shape you like. It can be flat or 3D. 4. Your name, school name and grade should be attached to the pumpkin with a gift tag. 5. Ribbons will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in elementary, middle, and high school divisions. 6. Pumpkins are due to the 4-H Office(511 Roussell Street) by September 30, 2016, no later than 4:00 p.m. 7. Pumpkins will be donated to a local nursing home and foster care facilities.
2 Page 2 7th and 8th graders. Are you up for the CHALLENGE? 4-H Challenge Camp is conducted at 4-H Camp Grant Walker, located near Pollock, Louisiana. This camp will be held November 16-18, 2016 The goals of 4-H Challenge Camp are to challenge 7th and 8th graders to set high personal goals as a result of activities designed to develop: a positive self-concept, interpersonal relationship skills, communication skills and decisionmaking skills. 4-H Challenge Camp consists of three days of activities to increase self-confidence and self-reliance in young people. 4-H youth will actively participate in: outdoor challenge activities, personal development sessions, self concept workshops, goal-setting sessions and MUCH MORE. Space is limited. The cost per camper will be $90 which includes transportation, meals, and a t-shirt. Interested 7th and 8th grade 4-H members should contact the 4-H office by September 26, 2016 by calling Livestock Exhibitors Please contact Mr. Reed at if you are interested in showing livestock (goats, pigs, sheep, rabbits) in 4-H during this school year. It is important that we have your name, address and address so you can receive information on upcoming events. 4-H members should be enrolled in a 4-H livestock project by September 30, It is the policy of the Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service that no person shall be subjected to discrimination on the grounds of race, color, national origin, gender, religion, age, or disability.
3 Page 3 4-H Seafood and Rice Cookery All dishes must be chilled prior to arrival, and arrive at registration in an ice chest with ice/ice packs. Your dish will be disqualified if it is not completely cold and packed on ice in an insulated ice chest at the time of inspections. NO EXCEPTIONS! Microwaves will be available for judges to heat samples before tasting dishes. *A sample of 4-6 servings (in one dish) is requested for judging. Place name and school name under the dish/container You must provide a copy of the recipe include the name of the recipe (recipe should have the 4-H ers name and school name on the back). The recipe should include the name of the dish, how much of the commodity it contains and clear preparation instructions. Previous year grand champion seafood dishes may not receive Grand Champion awards. 4-Her s will not be allowed to win grand champion in more than one category. All dishes receive ribbon awards. Grand Champion dishes selected in each category will receive awards. 1 point will be given to each member for entering the cookery regardless of the number of dishes entered. 4-H members will also be given a point for participating in the educational workshops. Saturday, October 1, 2016 Caldwell Middle 445 Hwy 331 Schriever Registration: In Cafeteria 9:00 9:30 a.m. Judging: 9:30-11:30 a.m. Educational Workshops 9:30-11:30 a.m. Awards: 11:30 a.m. Cloverbuds receive participation ribbons. Seafood Cookery Guidelines Seafood used should be Louisiana seafood. Categories: Shrimp Main Dish, Shrimp Appetizer or Salad, Crab, Oyster, Fish and Other Seafood, Crawfish Guidelines: 1. Any 4-H member may participate. Participants may enter only one (1) seafood dish in each category. 2. Prepare a food dish using at least 1 cup of LOUISIANA seafood as an ingredient. The seafood must be fresh, frozen, pasteurized or dried. Canned seafood will not be acceptable. - Surimi, an artificial crab made from fish, cannot be used. There can be no raw seafood in the final dish Her s are encouraged to prepare healthy seafood dishes. Avoid excessive amounts of fat and sodium. Avoid frying foods. Dishes will be judged on taste and nutritional content/value Her s will not be allowed to win grand champion in more than one category. 5. Winners in Shrimp Main Dish, Crab, Oyster, Fish and Other Seafood, and Crawfish will represent Terrebonne in the area cookery contest. Shrimp Appetizer/Salad Grand Champion will not participate in the area cookery unless the Shrimp Main Dish winner cannot attend. Rice Cookery Contest Categories: Rice Main Dish, Rice Side Dish, Rice Dessert Guidelines: 1.Any 4-H member may participate. Participants may enter only one (1) rice dish in each category. 2. Contestants must bring a prepared rice dish, containing at least 1 cup of cooked rice. *wild rice is not a cultivated rice in Louisiana and does not meet the requirement of 1 cup rice for this contest. Dishes containing rice products such as rice cereal, rice flour, etc. must also contain cooked rice. Rice Crispy cereal cannot be used as rice for this cookery Her s will not be allowed to win grand champion in more than one category. 4. Winners in each category will represent Terrebonne Parish in the area cookery contest. If you have a disability which requires special assistance for your participation in any of our activities, please contact the 4-H office at two weeks prior to the event.
4 Page 4 Geauxing for the Gold at 4-H U Geauxing for the Gold was this past summer s 4-H University s theme and Terrebonne 4-H members did just that, bringing home 23 blue ribbons! 4-H University is for 7th 12th grade 4-H members. 4-H youth train and complete for best in the state in various contests while some youth participate in Clover College which is noncompetitive. The Terrebonne 4-H members pictured above represented our parish very well! 5 Page 5 Horse Show Highlights: These Terrebonne 4-H Horse exhibitors know the true definition of hard work, responsibility and dedication. They work with their horses throughout the year to shine like stars at local shows but also at the summer Regional and State 4-H Shows. Congratulations to Elizabeth Gilmore (pictured right) for competing and placing 5th in individual horse judging. Congrats to Elizabeth Gilmore for placing 1st in Reigning and qualifying for Regionals, Layal Pellegrin for Placing 1st in Stock Horse Pleasure and qualifying for Regionals, Delani Lasseigne for placing 1st in Barrels and High Point in speed events and qualifying for Regionals, and Desi Lasseigne for qualifying for Regionals. 6 H Summer Camp Terrebonne Parish 4-H had a great time at Camp Grant Walker. Mrs. Cherie and Mr. Reed were proud of the camp group that represented Terrebonne 4-H campers, 8 junior counselors, and 4 adult volunteers attend. The youth who attended participated in educational and recreational tracks throughout the week, making friends and memories that will last a lifetime. Project Clubs: Want a little more out of 4-H? 4-H offers a variety of contests and activities but we also try to target a variety of interest though project clubs and workshops. If you are interested in any of these project clubs, call the 4-H office at by September 28, 2016 to sign up. You will be asked for additional contact information when you call. Once you are enrolled your will receive s about each club you enrolled in. We have 4 project clubs available for Terrebonne 4-H members: SET Club Science, Engineering, and Technology Club Open to ALL 4-H members. We will meet about 4 times throughout the year to conduct fun hands-on lessons. Meetings are held in the evenings at the 4-H office. Fashion Club Open to ALL 4-H members. We will meet about 4 times throughout the year to learn about fashion and sewing. Meetings are held in the evenings. You are almost guaranteed to leave each meeting with something that you have made. Pet Club Open to ALL 4-H Members. We will meet about 4 times throughout the year to learn about a variety of pet topics. Meetings are held in the evenings. You do not have to own a pet to join the pet club. Junior Leader Club Open to 7th-12 grade 4-H members. We meet once a month at the Houma Municipal Auditorium. Junior Leaders participate in many community service projects, fun educational trips as well as helping out at parish events. Join us for our next meeting, October 4, 2016 at the Houma municipal Auditorium 6:00-7:00 p.m. If you are unable to attend and would still like to join, contact Mrs. Cherie at the 4-H office at or croger@agcenter.lsu.edu Shooting Sports Terrebonne Parish 4-H offers Shooting Sports to 4th 12th grade 4-H members. You can participate in two disciplines archery and/or shotgun. This 4-H project requires parents to be present with their child at all shooting sports events and activities. To sign up, please call the 4-H office at Once you sign up, parents and youth will have to attend a mandatory meeting. This meeting will complete your enrollment process.
