2 Livestock Show & Sale News There have been several changes to the program for It is important that you read through the rules and regulations and understand your responsibilities. Here are a few of the highlights you don t want to miss: Date Changes we have moved our show and sale to the first week of August to avoid conflicts with the start of school. The show and sale will not be part of the Doddridge County Fair this year. This has changed project possession deadlines. You will also want to make sure your potential buyers know this. Poultry Projects major changes to how the poultry projects will work this year. If you are interested in broilers or turkeys be sure to read those sections of the rules and regulations before you sign up for the project. Changes made since December 2016 o Time of shows moved to 5:00 pm o Buyers Dinner added prior to sale o Lamb tail docking policy changed by WVU Administration. 2

5 A. General Exhibit Rules 1. To be eligible to participate in the Doddridge County 4-H & FFA Livestock Show and Sale, exhibitors must be a current member in good standing by December 1 st of either a Doddridge County 4-H club or the Doddridge County High School FFA chapter. 4-H members must be in at least the third grade and or 9 years of age during the 4-H year and will not reach his/her 21 st birthday on or before January 1 st of the current 4-H year. FFA members must be in at least the ninth grade and will not reach his/her 21 st birthday on or before January 1 st of the current year regardless of race, color, sex, disability, religion, veteran status, political beliefs, sexual orientation, national origin, and marital or family status. 2. All animals exhibited must comply with health regulations of the Department of Agriculture of the State of West Virginia. Animals shall be presented to show events where they will enter the food chain free of violative drug residues. Pay attention to all withdrawal times on any medications and dewormers that you may use. 3. Exhibitors must comply with current WVDA and USDA requirements regarding identification of animals and premise identification. 4. The International Code of Show Ring Ethics listed in the Exhibit Rules and Regulations of the Doddridge County 4-H and FFA Livestock Show and Sale will govern all livestock shows. 5. Exhibitors must bring their animal to the county park for processing on the specified dates for weigh-in, tagging, etc. Exhibitors must be present at tag-in. 6. Animals will be weighed only once at show check-in. Over or underweight animals will be backed of the scales, the scales balanced and the animal immediately placed back on the scales. Over and Underweight animals will not be permitted to enter the grounds. They will not be eligible to show or be sold H and FFA members must participate in 2 hours of approved Quality Assurance training and complete the WVU On-Line QA training module to be eligible to participate in show and sale. 8. Dress Code for showmanship and animal placing classes should have the following as a minimum: a. Closed toed, sturdy shoes (leather boots preferred). b. Clean shirts/blouses and dark trousers (jeans will be acceptable) c. No hats. d. No tank tops, midriffs, or shorts. 9. FFA members must have an up-to-date Record Book presented to FFA instructor(s) before the exhibition to show and sell their animals H members must indicate on enrollment cards which livestock projects are being taken by December 1 st deadline. FFA members must report to FFA instructor(s) which livestock animals are being taken by the December 1 st deadline. No one will be able to add a livestock project after the December 1 st deadline. 11. All pens and walkways must be kept clean. Animals must have fresh feed and water. Exhibitors failing to comply will forfeit their privilege to participate in the sale. 12. All exhibitors must assist with barn set-up and clean up as assigned. 13. Protests regarding the livestock shows are to be made to the Extension agents, and FFA advisors in writing, signed, and accompanied by a deposit of $ cash or certified check which will be forfeited if protest is not sustained. Such protests must state plainly the cause of the complaint or appeal of such protest. Protest will be considered by the show officials as speedily as possible. 5

6 C. Market Steer Show & Showmanship 1. Only steer calves of beef breeds may be exhibited and they must be under 24 months of age at time of exhibition. 2. Steers must be owned and the exhibitor s possession by December 1 st. Project animals will be tagged and weighed in January at a time and location determined by the program officials. In the event of inclement weather as determined by the program officials another date will be set within the next two weeks. 3. At the time of initial tagging and weigh-in calves must be castrated by cutting or banding, be dehorned, and show no evidence of internal or external parasites. 4. At show weigh-in steers must weight not less than 1000 pounds. Underweight steers will be disqualified from showing and will be ineligible to be sold. 5. Showmanship classes will be divided by exhibitors ages. D. Market Hog Show & Showmanship 1. Hogs must be owned and the exhibitor s possession by April 15th. Project animals will be tagged and weighed in June at a time and location determined by the program officials. In the event of inclement weather as determined by the program officials another date will be set within the next week. 2. Exhibitors may tag two hogs, but only one may be exhibited and sold. 3. Hogs must be born after January 1 st of the current year. 4. Hogs may be gilts or barrows. Barrows must be properly castrated and healed by initial tagging and weigh-in. 5. At show weigh-in hogs must weigh not less than 215 pounds or more than 305 pounds. Over or under weight hogs will be disqualified from showing and will be ineligible to be sold. 6. Showmanship classes will be divided by exhibitors ages. 7. Hogs will be shown in weight classes. Each weight class will be placed from top to bottom beginning with Champion and Reserve Champion. The Champion and Reserve Champion hog in each class will return to the ring to compete for overall Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion. E. Market Lamb Show & Showmanship 1. Only lambs of meat breeds may be exhibited. 2. Lambs must be born after January 1 st of the current year. 3. Lambs must be owned and the exhibitor s possession by May 20th t. Project animals will be tagged and weighed June at a time and location determined by the program officials. In the event of inclement weather as determined by the program officials another date will be set within the next week. 4. Exhibitors may tag two lambs, but only one may be exhibited and sold. 5. Lambs may be ewes or wethers. Wethers must be properly castrated by the initial tagging and weigh-in. 6. Lambs tails are docked for cleanliness and to minimize fly strike, but cosmetic, excessively short tail docking can lead to an increased incidence of rectal prolapses and is unacceptable for the welfare of the lamb. We recommend that lambs tails be docked at the level of the distal end of the caudal tail fold. Market lambs or breeding sheep entered in 4-H/FFA sponsored youth fair exhibits will be observed by Extension and/or FFA personnel for evidence of rectal prolapse. Any lamb exhibiting any signs of rectal prolapse will be disqualified from the event, any official tags removed, and the animal removed from the premises. 6

7 7. At show weigh-in lambs must weigh not less than 100 pounds or more than 140 pounds. Over or under weight lambs will be disqualified from showing and will be ineligible to be sold. 8. If horns are present, lambs must have horns tipped. No sharp points allowed. 9. Lambs must be skin clipped within ten days prior to the show. 10. Showmanship classes will be divided by exhibitors ages. A champion show person will be selected in each class. 11. Lambs will be shown in weight classes. Each weight class will be placed from top to bottom beginning with Champion and Reserve Champion. The Champion and Reserve Champion lamb in each class will return to the ring to compete for overall Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion. 12. Use of ice, ice packs, cold packs, cold compresses, wet towels, wet blankets, etc. internally or externally, is prohibited. F. Market Goat Show & Showmanship 1. Only goats of meat breeds may be exhibited. 2. Goats must be born after January 1 st of the current year. 3. Goats must be owned and the exhibitor s possession by May 20th. Project animals will be tagged and weighed in June at a time and location determined by the program officials. In the event of inclement weather as determined by the program officials another date will be set within the next week. 4. Goats may be does or wethers. Wethers must be properly castrated by the initial tagging and weigh-in. 5. Exhibitors may tag two goats, but only one may be exhibited and sold. 6. At show weigh-in goats must weigh not less than 60 pounds or more than 120 pounds. Over or under weight lambs will be disqualified from showing and will be ineligible to be sold. All goats must have horns tipped. No sharp points allowed. 6. Goats must be skin clipped within ten days prior to the show. 7. Showmanship classes will be divided by exhibitors ages. A champion show person will be selected in each class. 8. Goats will be shown in weight classes. Each weight class will be placed from top to bottom beginning with Champion and Reserve Champion. The Champion and Reserve Champion lamb in each class will return to the ring to compete for overall Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion. G. Market Rabbit Show & Showmanship 1. The 4-H or FFA member must own the mother of the market pen by May 20th, breed her, and raise the litter at your home. 2. All market rabbits should be between 10 and 12 weeks of age at the time of weigh-in at the show. 3. All rabbits will be health checked prior to admission to the barn. 4. The pen-of-three rabbits must have a total pen weight between 12 and 18 pounds, meaning each rabbit should weigh 4 to 6 pounds. Only three rabbits will be weighed. 5. Each exhibitor may sell one market pen and all market pens entered must sell, providing they meet the weight requirements. 6. All members must provide a list of rabbits, including breed, sex, and class to the extension office. All rabbits must be at the members place of residence. 7. Market rabbits will be sold as a pen of rabbits, rather than by weight. 8. Project members must bring their rabbits to the table for judging. If help is required, another 4-H or FFA member must provide the assistance. 7

8 H. Market Poultry Show and Showmanship I. Broilers 1. Exhibitors will be responsible for ordering their own chicks for the project. 2. Broilers must be on the farm the week of June 5-9 and should be days of age at time of processing. 3. Exhibitors must present proof of age (receipt from hatchery) to the Extension Office in order to receive wing bands prior to processing. 4. Each exhibit will consist of three (3) chickens processed and packaged for legal sale. 5. Broilers regardless of breed, should weigh 5-8 lbs. per bird prior to processing. Processed birds must weigh lbs. to be eligible for sale. 6. Broilers will be processed at a properly inspected and licensed facility at a date and time arranged by the Extension Office. Exhibitors will be responsible for transporting their birds to the processing facility. 7. Birds will be evaluated at the processing facility. Extension Office will transport processed birds back to Doddridge County High School. Turkeys 1. Exhibitors will be responsible for ordering their own chicks for the project. 2. Turkeys must be on the farm by the week of April Turkeys must be between weeks of age at time of processing and weigh a minimum of 15 pounds and not over 40 pounds per bird. Processed birds must weigh at least 11 and not more than 30 lbs. to eligible to for sale. 4. Exhibitors must present proof of age (receipt from hatchery) to the Extension Office in order to receive wing bands prior to processing. 5. Each exhibit will consist of three (3) turkeys processed and packaged and packaged for legal sale. 6. Broilers will be processed at a properly inspected and licensed facility at a date and time arranged by the Extension Office. Exhibitors will be responsible for transporting their birds to the processing facility. 7. Birds will be evaluated at the processing facility. Extension Office will transport processed birds back to Doddridge County High School. 8

9 J. 4-H & FFA Sale 1. Must be enrolled in a Doddridge County 4-H Club or Doddridge County FFA Chapter by December 1 of current year. 2. Projects eligible to be sold: market steers, market, hogs, market lambs, market goats, three processed market broilers, pen of three rabbits, and pen of three processed turkeys. 3. Exhibitors may consign a total of three (3) projects in the sale, no more than one project of any species per exhibitor. 5. Animals sold by weight will be weighed on state certified scales and weighed by a WVDA licensed weighman. 7. Over or under weight animals will not be sold H and FFA Members should send a thank you note to their buyer. It is the responsibility of the seller to recruit buyers for the sale. The Extension Office will provide passes to existing and potential buyers. 9. Grand and Reserve Champions must be sold. Champion will sell first, followed by Reserve Champion, others will be sold in order of placing in quality classes. 10. Animals designated for resale or donated back will become the property of the 4-H & FFA Youth Livestock Association and will be resold at the Barn Fund Resale. Animals will not be permitted to be donated back to the exhibitor during the sale. 9
