While the cattle markets have settled a bit, analysts reports in late February, as we write this, indicate cattle prices should remain strong through It will continue to pay to invest in advanced genetics. We now have at our disposal an ever increasing array of tools to evaluate our bulls. As bulls are the cornerstone of all of our programs, it is imperative that we use as many of these tools as possible. First, we have to continue to use the old art of visual analysis. For all of the advancements in genetic evaluation we still need to use our eyes to evaluate structural soundness and those elements of the phenotype that contribute to ease of calving (smooth shoulders and head size). We can also use our visual analysis to complement our other tools in evaluating efficiency. It is well established that the single biggest factor in profitability for cattle operations is cost control. The largest recurring expense is feed and the more efficient our cattle become at converting roughage into beef and maintaining body condition, without high energy feeds, the more profit we can realize. Second, we use the many tools now available to us to help us select bulls with the calving ease, growth, maternal and carcass traits that will yield the greatest profits for our respective operations. These tools include the use of expected progeny differences (). See the discussion on page 19 regarding the remarkable usefulness of this tool. As more and more sophistication enters our business, the quality of the carcasses we produce may have as much or more to do with our profits as the pounds we produce. More cattle buyers are tracking cattle through the system and are paid, and will pay, premiums based on carcass quality. When they find a producer that consistently provides better carcass performance, they will return to that producer and will compete with other buyers to purchase his or her cattle in the future. A consistent, concentrated effort to produce cattle that are born easily, grow efficiently and yield a high quality carcass is the surest way to profits and longevity in the cattle business. We have used genetic pressure and all of the tools available for decades to create the bulls available in this sale. Much of the work is done. Evaluate the visual attractiveness, personal performance and of these bulls and invest in decades of genetic advancement to improve your herd s long term profitability. The Drake Families

21 Do really work? Saturday, March 19, Centerville, Iowa Agriculture, including the cattle business, increasingly relies on new developments in technology and science. In an ever more competitive market place, cattlemen and women constantly seek ways in which to differentiate their operations from others in that market place. One method used by many is the pursuit of the optimum expected progeny difference (EPD) mix. The optimum mix obviously varies depending upon your target market. However, we all have wondered are accurate? Do they really work? The discussion about what is optimum and how to achieve it is moot if are not accurate. The old adage that you can only improve what you can measure inherently relies upon the measurement being accurate. We recently (February 2016) consigned and sold several bulls at the Iowa Beef Expo. At the 2016 Beef Expo 77 head of Simmental and SimAngus bulls had their carcass traits measured by ultrasound. It occurred to us that this was an opportunity to conduct our own analysis of the accuracy of. For simplicity purposes, and because of the increasing importance of carcass quality, we selected the marbling and ribeye for analysis. We first ranked all bulls by EPD, with number one being the highest marbling EPD and number 77 being the lowest marbling EPD. We then ranked all of the bulls from 1 to 77 using their scanned actual (adjusted) marbling score, again with number one being the bull with the highest marbling score and number 77 being the bull with the lowest marbling score. What we found has given us renewed confidence in the EPD protocol and its use in our herds. The top 41 bulls for marbling EPD (we wanted to compare the top half to the bottom half-but because a number of bulls had the same marbling EPD the split was not exactly 50-50) averaged an actual (adjusted) marbling score of 4.37 while the bottom 36 bulls averaged a marbling score of In general, it appeared the EPD for marbling accurately predicted those bulls with superior marbling and those not so superior. Further, of the top ten marbling EPD bulls, five ranked in the top ten for actual marbling. Of the twenty top marbling EPD bulls, ten ranked in the top twenty for actual marbling. On the other end of the spectrum, of the seven lowest bulls for actual marbling, six of those seven were also in the lowest 10 for marbling EPD. Overall, and while there were outliers, in general the high EPD marbling bulls were the high actual marbling bulls, the low EPD marbling bulls were the low actual marbling bulls and the middle of the road marbling EPD bulls were the middle of the road actual marbling bulls. The average marbling EPD for the bulls with the top half of actual marbling was.29 and the average marbling EPD for the bulls with the bottom half of actual marbling was.04. Clearly the marbling EPD accurately predicted, in general, those bulls with strong actual marbling and those without. We then turned to an analysis of ribeye and conducted the same analysis. We ranked the bulls from best to worst for ribeye EPD and best to worst for actual ribeye size. The top one half of bulls by EPD averaged a ribeye EPD of.88 and an actual ribeye measurement, as adjusted for age, of The bottom half of bulls for ribeye EPD averaged.51 and averaged an actual ribeye measurement, as adjusted for age, of Again, the EPD accurately predicted those bulls that would produce larger ribeyes and those bulls that would not. We aren t scientists, but the results of this evaluation seem significant and compelling with regard to EPD accuracy. Yes it would be more compelling to know how the calves of these bulls perform in actual marbling or ribeye (the ACTUAL progeny difference) and to test this analysis over more EPD traits and with more scientific controls for outside variables that can affect the outcome. However, presumably the high marbling and high ribeye EPD bulls in the Expo sale were the sons of bulls and females with high marbling and ribeye. They are the progeny of bulls and females with expected progeny differences that predict they will have high actual marbling and ribeye size. And they do. Our analysis indicates we should all begin to take more comfort in the EPD information provided by our association and to believe that we can rely on that information in our breeding decisions. 19
