Hill County Extension Agent - Agriculture Borden County 2011 District 2 4-H Horse Show The 2011 District 2 4-H Horse Show will be held June 21 at the Texas Tech Equestrian Center in Wolfforth, Texas. This year s show will be a one day event. All entries (which includes a one time $60 District exhibitor fee) must be entered on 4-H connect between May 18 th and June 3 rd, The $60 exhibitor fee includes a t-shirt and all classes entered except for the roping and working cow horse events (which have an additional fee for stock charges). All payments must be paid on 4-H Connect. Late registration will be open from June 4 th to June 10 th but the exhibitor fee will increase to $100. The 4-H Connect website is: Texas Tech will handle the stalling arrangements and stall fee will be $20. Coggins will need to be presented to Texas Tech stalling committee before stalls will be assigned. They will also be offering a full concession stand for breakfast and lunch. The arena will open at 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 21, for exhibitors to ride and the show will start at 7:30 a.m. This year s show should be very exciting. Again, we are raising money to make the D-2 4-H Horse Show the best ever! We are selling class sponsorships for $75. With these sponsorships, we will be able to give buckles to the Champion and Reserve Champion in each division. Moreover, we will be able to enhance our awards throughout the show. 2 There have been many changes over the past few years on the District and State level. Here are some rule changes that 4-H families need to be aware of: 1) Qualification procedures at District Horse Shows are significantly different from prior years. There are now a total of 9 Qualifying Divisions and a 4-H er must show in at least one class in a division at District in order to be eligible for all classes in that division at the State Show. These qualifying divisions are: Judged Western Halter Speed Events Hunter Flat Yearling Halter Gelding Yearling Halter Filly Yearling Longe Line 2-Year-Old Futurity 3-Year-Old Futurity Western Judged Trail has been added to the Western Judged Division and is now offered at all 12 District shows. Western Trail is no longer an Open Class. A 4-H er can show a different horse in each Qualifying Division, but only 1 horse per division. See pages 7, 8, 12, 13 & 14 of the Rulebook. 2) Hunter Showmanship, Hunter Under Saddle and Hunt Seat Equitation are now Qualifying Classes at all 12 District 4-H Horse Shows. In past years, a 4-H er could enter these classes at the State 4-H Horse Show, whether they went to the District 4-H Horse Show or not. In 2011, to be eligible to enter any of these classes at State, the 4-H er must enter and show in at least one of these 3 classes at the District Horse Show in order to be eligible to enter those classes at the State Show. 3) Futurity project horses must be entered and shown in their respective futurity class at the District 4-H Horse Show in order to be eligible to enter and show in that futurity class at State. So, for 4-H ers with futurity projects, the two steps are: 1. Nominate and validate a futurity project on or before May 1 st 2. Enter and show in the futurity class at District. Completion of those two steps and adherence to the futurity rules will make a futurity project eligible to be entered and shown at the State Show. All 12 Districts now offer Yearling Futurity Halter Gelding, Yearling Halter Filly classes, Yearling Futurity Longe Line, 2- Year-Old Futurity Division (Pleasure Pattern, Versatility, and Western Pleasure Classes) and 3-Year-Old Futurity Division (Stock Horse Pleasure, Trail, Reining, Cow Working Classes). 4) Open Division classes (14 classes across 4 divisions) continue to be Open and do not require participation at District. These include the 4 over-fence classes (Hunter Over Fence Division), 3 Roping classes (Roping Division), Reining, Working Cow Horse, Team Penning,

3 Cutting and a new Stock Horse Trail class (Stock Horse Division), and Drill/Precision Riding Division. These divisions are on page 14 of the Rulebook. 5) Any 4-H er not planning to attend the District 4-H Horse Show, yet planning to enter Open Division classes at the State Show, should get with their County Extension Agent and/or District Extension office prior to the District 4-H Show. Several Districts close State Show entries at the completion of the District Show. Therefore, communication well in advance will be important. 6) Stock Horse Trail class is a new class that was designed to fit in the Stock Horse Division and cater to those youth with horses suited to classes such as reining, cutting, cow horse, team penning and roping. It is open to those 4-Hers with horses that are not entered in the regular Western Trail class. The guidelines for this new class are found in the rulebook on page 70. It has been designed for those 4-H ers with well mannered, broke horses that would also be useful in a ranch-type setting. If possible, obstacles will differ slightly from regular Western Trail obstacles in order to better simulate certain conditions routinely experienced in ranch and nature trail settings. 7) The 2011 Texas 4-H Horse Show Rules and Regulations contain all the changes, with important revisions in red type. All 4-H ers and families should be familiar with the revised rules. They can be found at by clicking on Livestock first, then Horses, then the 4-H Horse Projects banner across the top of that page. SHOW RESPONSIBILITIES The Agent or Chairman for the events will be responsible to make sure that all necessary equipment for each event is present on the day of the show. We will again have individual packets for each exhibitor, therefore the contestant or their parents may pick up their individual packet solving group or county packet problems. Remember: The Texas Animal Health Commission will be requiring horses to have a negative EIA (Coggins) Test within the previous 12 months before being mingled with other horses at competitive, social, or exhibition events. Therefore we will be requiring a negative Coggins Test on all horses entering the grounds. Listed below are the assignments for the District 2 4-H Horse Show Management Team. Individuals assigned to events are responsible for the equipment, arena maintenance, and all other items necessary to run the event assigned. The indoor is 120 X 255 and includes lights, radiant heat, evaporative cooling and a PA system. Bleacher seating for 300 people. Room for people to put their lawn chair along the arena as well. Space for approximately 6 8 vendors (depending on their booths) with electricity, if some of your sponsors want to set up a booth during the event. 90 X 125 covered warm-up arena with light, adjoining the indoor arena. 80 X 180 outdoor warm-up arena X 12 indoor stalls for your eventers to house their horses for the night. 18 overnight trailer hookups, electric only. Air or manual operated roping chute. Outdoor pens for approximately 250 steers. Paved and crushed asphalt parking lots. Concession stands offering a full menu including nachos, hamburger, quesadillas, taco salads and more. Staff to work with your event staff to make sure the ground is the way you need it. We will begin working the grounds for your event a few days prior to the event (with your advise); and TTU staff to run the tractor and drag during your event. Knowing that the horses your patrons are riding are expensive and important to them, we work hard to keep the grounds in good shape. We have a new drag complete with a watering system (a Kiser drag) recommended by several arena footing/ground experts. Shavings available on site for bedding stalls. Staff attention before and during the event to help you make it the best event possible. A meeting room and patio upstairs available for an event auction, dinner, banquet, etc., complete with bathroom (extra charge depending on what se up we need to do here) X 250 outdoor arenas (extra charge work extra arenas). Jumping course available for lease. Trail course available for lease.
