1 (Rev. 2009) 4-H Horse & Pony Versatility Event Chairperson: Allison Sapp, West Lafayette, IN Hoosier Horse Fair, Indiana State Fairgrounds, Fall Creek Pavilion Arena Juniors and Seniors - Friday, April 3, 7:00 p.m. 1. Only Indiana 4-H members may participate. Juniors are youth in the 3rd thru 7th grades and Seniors are in the 8th grade or above. Participant's grade is determined as of January 1, Only a maximum of 15 Juniors & 15 Seniors may participate. Participant selection is based upon (a) accepting earliest entries and (b) random draw. 3. The rules contained in the current Indiana 4-H Horse & Pony Handbook (4-H 661) (the green one), will be used. Classes: (1) Hunter Under Saddle; (2) Western Pleasure; (3) Horsemanship (4-H Patterns) and (4) Keyhole Race H ers must use their 4-H project horse/pony. 5. Each participant must have two 4-H members help: one for clothes & tack changes and one to hold the animal. They must be properly attired in Western style long pants, long-sleeved shirt with collar, and Western boots. Each exhibitor must provide their own wheelbarrow to transport tack into the arena. 6. Participants will have FIVE (5) minutes to change their clothes and tack between classes. 7. Once the first class begins, the participants and horses cannot leave the ring until the last class is completed. 8. Any infractions of the above rules will disqualify the participant. 9. Stalling of 4-H horses/ponies will be in the horse stalls located in the Swine Barn. (Bedding is required.) Animal owners must provide their own feed and bedding. Bedding will be available for purchase at the Stalling Office. 10. Registration is $10/entry (1 participant and 2 helpers). Use the entry form in this packet to enter. There is a $45 fee for each stall used for animals and/or tack. Make checks payable to Purdue University. Registration deadline is March 10. Send entries HHF, YDAE, 615 West State Street, West Lafayette, IN Awards will be presented immediately following the event to all participants in both divisions. Ties will be broken first on the most first places earned and then by the most placings in the classes. 12. Two judges will judge this event without comparing notes or placings. 13. One admission ticket to the Hoosier Horse Fair will be given to each 4-H er and the two 4-H helpers who participate in this event provided a registration form is on file at Purdue by the deadline of March 10. Tickets must be presented at the gate to the Fairgrounds this year. 14. Coaches/parents/leaders wishing to purchase advance tickets may order them from the Indiana Horse Council at or call Admission now includes the cost of parking.

3 (Rev. 2009) Purdue Invitational Horse Judging Contest Sunday, April 5, 2009 Indiana State Fairgrounds 8:00 a.m. Pepsi Coliseum Time: Location: Purpose: 8:00 a.m. Judging begins. Registration starts at 7:00 a.m. in the south hallway of the Pepsi Coliseum. Report by 7:45 a.m. Please enter through doors on the north side of the Coliseum. Registration and all judging will be in the Pepsi Coliseum. Reasons locations will be announced at the event. To provide a learning opportunity for individuals interested in horse evaluation and oral reasons by gaining experience in a contest situation. The emphasis will be placed on education of participants, rather than on the winning of awards. General Information Divisions Junior Individuals Intermediate Individuals Senior Individuals Grades (3rd - 5th grade) (6th - 8th grade) (9th grade & above) Reasons 1-Halter 1- Halter 2- Halter 1- Performance 2- Performance Grade is determined as of January 1, Classes & Schedule: Four halter and four to six performance classes will be judged. Any class described in the 4-H Horse and Pony Handbook may be judged. Entry Fees & Deadline: Registration is $15.00 and must be submitted by paper this year. Entries are due by March 10, Entries are non-refundable. There is no limit on the number of individuals who may enter from each county, school or association. All entries will be sent to: YDAE, HHF, 615 West State Street, West Lafayette, IN , by March 10th. Horse Fair Admission Tickets: One admission ticket to the Hoosier Horse Fair will be given to each young person who enters in this event by the March 10 deadline, and must be presented to enter the Fairgrounds. Adults wishing to purchase advance tickets may order them from the Indiana Horse Council at or call Admission now includes the cost of parking. The Horse Fair does not open until 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, therefore, parents and other attendees must remain in the Pepsi Coliseum until the Horse Fair opens. If parents or spectators are found wandering through the commercial areas prior to their opening, the youth will be disqualified from the contest. Food: A snack and drink will be provided to contestants who enter by March 10 th. Results & Awards: Awards will be presented to the top 20 individuals in each of the three divisions. 6 4-H Groom & Clean Event (Rev. 2009) When: Saturday, April 4, :00 a.m. Where: Indiana State Fair Grounds Outdoor Covered Arena Objective: The purpose of this event is to provide an opportunity for 4-H members to demonstrate their grooming and handling techniques and abilities under unusual and unique circumstances. Each county may enter one team in each of the following divisions: Junior Intermediate Senior (3rd-5th grade) (6th-8th grade) (9th grade and above) Participant's grade is determined as of January 1, Only a maximum of 15 Junior, 15 Intermediate and 15 Senior teams may participate. Participant selection is based upon (a) having participants from many counties, (b) accepting earliest entries, (c) random draw. Teams with members of mixed ages will compete in the division of the oldest member. 2. Each team shall consist of 3 members (2 groomers and 1 handler). Handler may participate as a team member with grooming of the animal. Teams will use their own animals. 3. Participants must wear boots, long pants and hat or cap. (Show clothes are not suitable.) Clothing shall not identify the county or club. 4. There will be an orientation for contestants and their coaches in the Outdoor Arena. 5. Only committee dirt demons will dirty the animals. Catsup, mustard, molasses, honey, grease or eggs will not be used. 6. Each team will have 15 minutes for grooming their animal. 7. Scoring a. All three team members will take a short oral quiz on grooming and grooming equipment identification. b. Sportsmanship measured by cooperation with officials, respect and safety for teammates and others, ability to work as a team member. (5 points) c. Handling measured by presentation of animal and equipment in timely fashion, appropriate attire, safe and correct handling of animal. (25 points) d. Cleaning in regard to the use of equipment and supplies, the treatment of the horse/pony while using these items, and final cleanliness of the horse/pony. (40 points) e. Interview by judge - one question per team member. (30 points) 8. Required Grooming Kit (one of each below) a. Curry Comb - hard rubber or plastic b. Body Brush or finishing brush c. Dandy brush or finishing brush d. Mane and tail comb e. Hoof pick (any style) f. Colored bristle brush (stiff) g. Grooming cloth (no larger than 3 X 2 ) h. Quart of Water (can be bottle or spray bottle - NO GLASS) May be divided into two containers. Plastic or cloth ground cloth to help keep your tools off dirty ground. (max. 3 X3 ) Fly spray can be used if needed (NO SHOW SHEEN OR HORSE FINISH) Carrying tote or bucket i. NOTE: *This kit can be doubled except for the water. This gives each grooming member his or her own set of equipment to use. No electric or battery powered equipment may be used. No trimming allowed.

RETURN THIS FORM WITH YOUR ENTRIES BY MARCH 10, Tack stalls will be provided free of charge every six stalls. Private tack stalls are available at the same cost as a horse stall. You must pre-register for a private tack stall on this form. All stalls will be assigned in the order of arrival of the horses. People wishing to stall together must arrive at the stalling office together. Stalls will not be assigned before the horses arrive on the Indiana State Fairgrounds, and will only be assigned to the person whose signature accompanies this form.
