1 PALO PINTO COUNTY 4-H Cloverleaf Winter 2015 Are You Enrolled for the H Year? Just a reminder that to be a 4-H member you have to enroll each year. That means that you must have submitted a green enrollment form and fee or enrolled and submitted payment online. We are currently checking membership on those that have indicated that they are a 4-H member on their Palo Pinto County Livestock Show entry form. Texas 4-H requires every 4-H youth member and volunteer leader to enroll or re-enroll during each 4-H year. Texas 4-H has an annual participation fee for youth members of $20.00 up to October 31, 2014, and a $25.00 fee from November 1st to the completion of the H year. Clover Kids (grade K-2) are exempt from this fee. The participation fee for volunteer leaders will be paid for by the Palo Pinto County 4-H program. Members and leaders have the option to complete a paper enrollment and submit along with the participation fee or to register online through 4-H Connect. If you want to complete the process online, please contact the Extension office at for additional instructions. If you enroll in 4-H online and have been a member in the past, please do not establish a new profile. Contact the extension office if you need help in accessing your information. 4-H volunteers that work directly with youth must be screened before becoming a volunteer. Scholarships must be submitted by January 20th. If you have not talked to Lynette and plan to apply, please contact her at asap. The financial part should have already been completed. It is important to remember that these are academically competitive scholarships. The applicant must be in the upper one-half of his/her class based on scholastic rank for the first 3.5 years. The minimum testing scores (from a single testing date) that are required to apply are as follows: ACT - 19 SAT (Total points from the critical reading, mathematics and writing sections). 2 Do you need help clipping your project? Scott Mauney, Palo Pinto County Extension Agent Agriculture, will be at the Mineral Wells Ag Farm (on the base) on Monday, January 5th from 9:30 a.m.? to clip sheep, goats and pigs for the county show. Scott will also be in Santo on Tuesday, January 6. Please call the Extension office at if you plan to attend. It is our fund raiser for the year on the county level. All the money raised goes to the Palo Pinto County 4-H program and helps to provide funds for 4-H activities throughout the year. Each club is responsible for having workers at certain scheduled times. Parents, please contact your club manger and let them know that you are willing to help. The annual event will be held January 7-9, 2015 at the Sheriff s Posse Building located on FM 1821 in Mineral Wells. Entries will be accepted on Wednesday, January 7 th from 2:00 p.m. 8:00 p.m. A variety of classes are available in Art; Photography; Needlework, Quilting, and Sewing; Hobbies and Crafts; Shop and Tack; Baked Goods and Candy; Canned Goods and the Kiddies Department. All entries should have been completed since the 2014 fair. There are a few special rules in some of the divisions. In photography, pictures need to be 8 X10 and should not be matted or framed. Photos will be placed in page protectors at the time of entry. All entries in the Baked Goods and Candies Division must be on disposable plates, pans or covered firm cardboard and should be wrapped in clear plastic or placed in a zip lock bag. Recipes are required at the time of entry. Items requiring refrigeration will not be accepted. Items in the Canned Goods Division should be in standard canning jars with a ring in place. Each entry must be labeled with the contents and date of processing. In most cases, a person may enter three items per class. A $1.00 fee will be charged for each entry.

4 Fashion Show, Fashion Storyboard, and Consumer Education Workshop Tuesday, February 17, :00 p.m. Please RSVP by Friday, February 13 to This meeting will be cancelled if no one calls to RSVP. This workshop will focus will help participants learn more about the 4-H Fashion Show, Fashion Storyboard and Consumer Judging as well as the projects that relate to each event. If you are unable to attend this meeting but are interested in these events, please contact the Extension office for more information. District 3 Horse & Beef Quiz Bowl Contests Both the District 3 Horse and Beef Quiz Bowl contests will be held on April 27th in Vernon. Quiz bowl requires a team of 3 or 4 members. We have the study materials available if you are interested in participating. District 3 Roundup Contests District 3 4-H Roundup will be held May 12th in Vernon. Events for the day will include the following contests: Educational Presentations Share-the-Fun (Talent Show) Consumer Decision Making Contest Information about each of these contests is available by contacting the Extension office. Entries will be due to the Extension office by mid-april. 4-H Photography Contest Entries for the 4-H Photography Contest will be due to the Extension office by March 17th. All photographs must have been taken by 4-H members between the dates of January 1, 2014 and the time of entry. Photos may be submitted only one time and in only one category. Participants will be required to submit a 8X10 photo (for county judging and display) as well as provide a copy of the photo electronically ( or disk). The county contest will follow the guidelines of both the district and state contests with the addition of providing a printed 8X10 copy of the photo. Detailed information is available at: Entries will be broken into Junior, Intermediate and Senior age groups. Entries winning first at county will be able to advance to district (Junior & Intermediate) or state (Senior). Classes are as follows: Animals - Domestic; Animals - Wildlife; Catch All; Details & Macros; Digital Darkroom; Dominant Color; Elements of Design; Food; Marine/Aquatics; Nature/Landscape; Night Photography; People; Plant/Flora; Storyboard; and Theme (Inspiration). District 3 Judging Events The following 4-H Judging Contests will take place on the district level this spring: Soil Judging, Grass I.D., and Range Evaluation, Breckenridge - March 25th Meats Judging, Stephenville - March 26th Horse Judging, Vernon - April 7th Wool/Mohair Judging Contests, Iowa Park - May 2nd Consumer Decision Making, Vernon - May 12th If you are interested in participating in any of these contests, please contact the Texas 4-H Roundup Guide Need to know what's happening at the 2015 Texas 4-H Roundup? It is available at Texas 4-H Roundup is a qualifying and invitational event for youth between the ages of 11 and 18 that have successfully placed in a qualifying event at the district level or signed up to compete in an invitational event at the state level. County and district Roundup s are open to all ages of 4-H members from 9 to 18. Texas 4-H Roundup includes approximately 50 different contests and workshops that test 4-H members on life skills in such attributes are decision making, public speaking, organization, and working with others. Roundup will be held June 8-11, 2015 at Texas A&M University in College Station.

5 Recordkeeping and 4-H Recordbooks Recordkeeping is a very valuable skill taught to members of the Texas 4-H program. Members are encouraged to keep project records and have these records reviewed annually by submitting a Texas 4-H Recordbook. The primary purposes of completing a recordbook are for a young person to develop the skills necessary to set goals, work toward achieving those goals, reflect on his/her experiences, and set new and higher goals for themselves. A secondary benefit is to prepare young people for the process of completing quality academic scholarship applications. The current forms and guidelines for the H Recordbook are available at: A workshop will be scheduled in the spring, but if you have questions now don t hesitate to ask. The deadline to submit recordbooks is June 25th. Palo Pinto County 4-H Criteria Based Awards Palo Pinto County 4-H has special awards that are presented each year at the awards banquet. These award applications are available on the Extension website for Palo Pinto County at Each award has certain requirements that should have been completed by the member. Award applications will be due by June 25th. These awards include: 4-H Gold Star Award The Gold Star Award is the highest county achievement award and will be awarded only once in a member s 4-H career. Counties have award quotas based on the number of senior 4-H members. The following are minimum requirements that must be met. The member must be at least 15 at the time of application and must have completed at least 3 years in 4-H, including the current year. The 4-H member must submit an awards program recordbook in the year he or she is to be considered for the award. All recordbooks must be submitted by June 25th. 4-H members that submit a recordbook and meet the basic requirements are invited to participate in the interview process for this award. Rookie Award (First Year 4-H Member - Any Age) Honor Roll Award (Junior Age 4-H Members) All Star Award (Intermediate Age 4-H Members) Letterman Award (Senior Age 4-H Members) Palo Pinto County 4-H Council Meeting Thursday, January 15, :30 p.m. Club delegates should plan to attend as we will be planning spring and summer activities.
