CANADIAN SENIOR PRO RODEO ASSOCIATION HISTORY The Canadian Senior Pro Rodeo Association, formerly known as the Canadian Old Timers Rodeo Association, was formed in 1985 by a group of Cowboys who were interested in the continued growth of rodeo from the aspect of an Old Timer - Old Timer being forty (40) years of age or older. As well as promotion of the sport of Rodeo for the Senior Pro Cowboys and Cowgirls, it affords the opportunity for friendly social activities. The membership in 1985 was approximately one hundred and twenty five and has been growing steadily since that time. We have members from Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia as well as the North West Territories. Our American members represent over 12 states - Nebraska in the east to Washington in the west and as far south as Texas and Oklahoma. The Association has attracted such rodeo legends as Leo Brown of Cochrane, AB., Fred Gladstone of Cardston, AB., and Bob Robinson, Millet, AB. - all inductees into the Canadian Rodeo Hall of Fame. Bill Reeder and Jim Gladstone, who each qualified for the CFR Finals in Edmonton 11 times, are past Canadian and World Champion Calf Ropers. Benny Reynolds, Twin Bridges, Montana, is the only cowboy in North America to hold Championships in every Major Rodeo Event. At the Annual Meeting in 1993 the membership felt it would be a prudent move to change the name of the Association. The name was changed from Canadian Old Timers Rodeo Association to Canadian Senior Pro Rodeo Association. The CSPRA sanctioned rodeos in Alberta and Montana. All our rodeos are co-sanctioned by the National Senior Pro Rodeo Association. Most of the sanctioned rodeos are sponsored by service organizations or clubs and our membership will do all we can to assist committees to have a successful rodeo. As with all non-profit organizations the Senior Pro has a limited source of income. Our major income comes from memberships and the generous sponsorship of individuals and businesses.
OPERATION OF ASSOCIATION The Canadian Senior Pro Rodeo Association operates under the Societies Act of the Province of Alberta, Incorporation No , with a Board of Directors, President, Vice President, and Secretary/Treasurer. As well as promotion of rodeo itself the CSPRA has a very capable and dedicated executive. The executive meets regularly to discuss any problems and generally conducts the business affairs of the association. Bob Williamson, an active competitor in Calf Roping, Team Roping and Ribbon Roping with his wife Faye until his death, was the Charter President. The Association is now under the capable hands of Brian Gillis, of Swift Current, Saskatchewan. Brian competes in the Team Roping event. The remainder of the executive is made up of dedicated men and women who are directors for each rodeo event as well as competitors in the event. The CSPRA maintains an office within the province of Alberta.
RODEO APPROVALS RODEO EVENTS The following events are required in order to hold a Senior Pro Rodeo. Bareback Saddle Bronc Bull Riding Steer Wrestling The above events have two age categories; and 50+ Should Rough Stock entries be low, the CSPRA has the following suggestions; Any Rough Stock event with very few entries, the committee may augment this event with High School contestants. The High School contestants would have a separate purse. Added money for High School events is up to the committee. $50.00 is a suggestion. Suggested entry fees for High School events is $25.00 Suggested High School contestants are a limited number to a maximum of 10. High School contestants would ride for 8 seconds and the Mark Out rule would apply. The remaining events are divided into age categories in order to make the competition equal. Tie Down Calf Roping 40-49, 50-59, 60+ & 68+ Team Roping 40-49, & 60+ Ladies Barrel Racing 40-49, & 60+ Ribbon Roping 40-49, & 60 Ladies Breakaway Roping no age categories, all rope together. Men s Breakaway Roping 70+ Ribbon Roping has proved to be one of the most popular events in rodeo. The roper ropes the calf and the lady (runner) must grab the ribbon off the calf s tail and run, on foot, back across the score line. If partners in Team Roping and Ribbon Roping do not fall into the same age category, they automatically fall back to the younger group. You may not enter an event in more than one age category. Enclosed is a Data / Approval Sheet that MUST be completely filled out and returned to the Association Office at least 45 days in advance of the rodeo. It would be most helpful if this approval sheet be returned 60 days in advance, thus enabling the Association to provide more advance notice to the membership, as well as assisting with advertising your rodeo function.
STOCK Keeping in mind the unique characteristics of the participants in the rough stock events, contractors are responsible for providing suitable stock for them. Suitable stock must be provided for the timed events and must be in accordance with the weight limits and any other requirements listed in the rule book. A new rule book with current updates has been included with this package. ADDED MONEY $ must be added in the Saddle Bronc, Bareback, Bull Riding and Steer Wrestling events. Team Roping & Ribbon Roping requires a minimum of $ per age category. Calf Roping & Ladies Barrel Racing requires a minimum of $50.00 per age category. Breakaway Roping 65+ and Ladies Breakaway is also $ NOTE: IF either the Bareback or Saddle Bronc has less than 3 entries, the two events may be combined for one $ purse. A Stock Charge is NOT permitted in this association. OFFICE CHARGE & FACILITY CHARGE An Office Charge of $7.50 per contestant per rodeo may be charged. This is included on the Contestant Entry Form and collected with entry fees. Of the $7.50 office charge $5.00 is retained by the committee and $ 2.50 goes back to the office. You cannot charge a contestant both an Office Charge and a Gate Admission. A ONE TIME Facility Charge of $10.00 per contestant may be charged. This is retained by the committee. ENTRY FEES Minimum Entry Fee is $50.00 per person per event.
5%, FINALS FEE, ADMINISTRATION FEE, FACILITY FEE & ELECTRIC EYE CHARGE The 5% plus 5% GST is deducted from the Total Purse (added money plus entry fees). This is done as the payout for each event is calculated. Each contestant is charged $2.50 plus GST equaling $2.63 per rodeo as a Finals Fee. There is a place for this on the entry form. This fee is returned to the CSPRA. Each contestant is charged $6.00 plus GST equaling $6.30 per rodeo as an Administration Fee. This is returned to the CSPRA. There is a place on the entry form for this charge. All Barrel Racers are charged a $1.00 plus GST equaling $1.05 per rodeo. This is returned to the CSPRA. There is a place for this on the entry form. All monies from the above must be sent to the CSPRA office with the result sheets and judges cards within 4 days of the rodeo. RODEO PERSONNEL Each committee must provide all rodeo personnel - judges, timers, rodeo secretary and help in the sorting pens and arena. The Association will be more than happy to assist in any way; they can provide names to find qualified personnel. You will find most contestants are more than happy to assist in any way they can at a rodeo. AMBULANCE An Ambulance or First Aid Vehicle MUST be available on the rodeo grounds at all performances and slack. INSURANCE Each Rodeo Committee must have Liability Insurance and furnish the CSPRA with a CERTIFICATE of INSURANCES clearly showing the CANADIAN SENIOR PRO RODEO ASSOCIATION is NAMED as an ADDITIONAL INSURED on the
policy. This certificate must be sent to the CSPRA office at least 60 days in advance of the rodeo. RODEO SECRETARY All forms will be sent to the Rodeo Secretary from the CSPRA Office. We ask that all unused forms be returned to the Association Office within 4 days of completion of your rodeo along with the following; Completed payout sheets (results). All judges and timers cards (including barrier and draw cards). Cheque for the 5%, Finals Fee, Administration Fee and Electric Eye Fees. FINALS Each year the CSPRA hosts a Finals Rodeo, with a Sudden Death Finals Format. Leader Awards are presented during the first performance of the Finals. 9 AVAILABLE GRANT MONEY FOR AMATEUR RODEO The Alberta Government has a Grant Program in place enabling Agricultural Societies, who qualify, to receive assistance with expenses incurred in producing Amateur Rodeo. Canadian Senior Pro Rodeos are eligible for this grant. In order to be eligible to receive this grant, your rodeo must be produced by an Ag Society or have participation by an Ag Society. There are different ways this can be accomplished. If you have any questions please feel free to contact the committee rep. The percentage of expenses you would get back would be somewhere between 25 % & 35%. This is well worth investigating. The Canadian Senior Pro Rodeo Association is looking forward to working with your committee. Sincerely, Committee Rep CSPRA
