2 2015 Awards Banquet Our formal-themed banquet was a great way to end the H club year in which we celebrated 100 th Anniversary of 4-H Ontario. Thank you again to all our invited guests, sponsors, families and friends for helping us celebrate. Thank you again to OMIA for the grant funds that were used toward our banquet and awards. We look forward to many more successful years of 4-H here in Norfolk County! 2015 Norfolk 4-H Award Winners and Recipients Kathryn Zimmer Memorial Scholarship recipient - Ryan Vogel Top Secretary Report - Rinske van der Steege Gay Lea Award of Achievement: Top Press Reporter Kayla Bishop Kayla Bishop, Alexandria Hall, Olivia Hall, Judging Clinic Winners: Jacqueline MacCormack, Ariana Tersteege Cloverbud Charlie Turner and Caitlyn VanZon. Novice Hannah Fuchs Top New Member: Taylor Barnes Junior Autumn Bell Outstanding 4-H Agricultural Member: Intermediate Rinske van der Steege Elizabeth LeBlanc Senior Bridget Sackrider Outstanding Senior Member: Vivian Adam New Norfolk 4-H Association Banners Our appreciation and thanks go to Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada (AAFC), the Government of Canada and 4-H Canada for the Growing Forward 2 Program that provided us with funds that we used to purchase three banners (two are in the picture on page one) and business cards. There will also be a new Norfolk 4-H brochure released later this month to hand out at events. The Growing Forward 2 Program was an initiative to support outreach and awareness of the 4-H movement in Canada. 4-H Canada launched its new logo in June of 2015 a cohesive effort amongst all 4-H provincial councils to illustrate the impact of 4-H on youth in Canada, build a consistent identity, as well as demonstrate the revitalization and vibrancy of the 4-H movement. Growing Forward 2 provided funds to support community level initiatives that proudly display the new 4-H Canada clover logo on branded materials by 4-H clubs, districts and regions. 3 Judging Night This year s Norfolk 4-H judging night takes place Friday, June 17, 2016 at Sonnyside Farm. Registration starts at 6:00 p.m. The farm is located on the south-east corner of Fernlea Side Road and Highway 3, which is East of Courtland. Please remember that judging is a mandatory requirement of the Norfolk 4-H Association in order to earn club credits. **IMPORTANT - see Club Requirements on Page 6** At judging night, Cloverbud members will have their own separate judging. 4-H members will be required to judge 4 similar items at a number of different judging stations using the criteria provided at each station, plus they will also complete a separate quiz. At some stations, answers are only written on a score card, but at other stations, the answer must also be told to the leader/volunteer at the particular station and they will write your mark down on your score card. Some items for judging are project achievements that members made at clubs, plus there s usually at least one type of livestock, but there could be other items as well. For judging guidelines, please visit the Norfolk 4-H website at: Why do we have a judging night? It s an opportunity to have fun and learn; It encourages 4-H spirit and enthusiasm It teaches decision-making skills; It helps members formulate sound reasons and helps to develop and support their opinions It provides members with the opportunity to broaden their horizons by learning about different clubs It s an opportunity for members to use public speaking and presentation skills Judging Events of other Region 4 Associations found on 4-H Ontario The following four judging events were found on the individual Region 4 Association webpages of the 4-H Ontario website as of the date of this newsletter. 4 Fundraising Thank You to Monica for the many years of sponsoring the Norfolk 4 H Association through the plant sale that took place at Sonnyside Farm. As the plant sale is not taking place this year, it is especially important that we come up with other ways to fundraise for our Association. The first initiative to take place will be through Vesey s Bulbs where we will earn 50% on each sale that we make. Catalogues and order forms will be arriving shortly and we will then distribute them to members and leaders. Orders will be taken up to April 16 th at which time we will collect them from everyone so we can get our order ready to place before the May 1 st deadline. To view the catalogue online, or to copy the link and send it to friends and family, please visit: talogue.compressed.pdf If you have any ideas or suggestions for other fundraising ideas, or if you know anybody who would be interested in sponsoring our association in any way, please contact the fundraising committee by ing Lori Hopper at lorih@execulink.com. 40 Second Talks Public speaking is an integral part of the 4-H program and members are required to practice speaking by doing 40 second talks at meetings. For help with 40 second talks, please visit the Norfolk 4-H website at: Club Press Reports Please remember that as the press reporter for your club, you must complete press reports for all meetings and you should have 2 or 3 reports published either in a local newspaper, in a Norfolk 4-H Newsletter, on the Norfolk 4-H website or even on the 4-H Ontario website. To have them published in the Norfolk 4-H newsletter or on the Norfolk 4-H website, please your report(s) to Lori at lorih@execulink.com To have them published on the 4-H Ontario website, just log onto the 4-H Ontario website and go to fill in all the required boxes and submit your report. 5 Discovery Days now includes Cloverbuds! New this year, members age 6 to 12 can attend Discovery Days, which now means Cloverbuds can attend! Please check out 4-H Ontario s website for more information and the registration form at: 4-H Ontario Provincial Opportunities Be sure to check out the provincial opportunities available to Ontario 4-H members in the Resource Guide that was mailed to you earlier this year and is also available online at: Information and registration forms for the provincial opportunities are also available on the website at: Norfolk 4-H Reimburses 50% of Fee for Provincial Opportunities (but only once for each different opportunity) Norfolk 4-H Association will reimburse members who attend each provincial opportunity, but only once for each different opportunity attended, and they must meet the following requirements to be reimbursed: 1. The member must do a verbal presentation about their experience at a Norfolk 4-H Association meeting in the year that the member attended the opportunity (by the December meeting at the latest.) The presentation must be approximately 5 minutes in length and can include pictures or video. 2. The member must repeat their presentation at the Norfolk 4-H awards banquet immediately following the year the member attended the opportunity. 3. A copy of the 4-H Ontario receipt for the opportunity or opportunities attended must be presented to the Association. The reimbursement will take place after banquet if all requirements have been met. We hope that other members will be encouraged by the presentations they hear (and see) about the opportunities and will consider attending opportunities themselves. Everyone who attends tells of the great time they had and the friendships they ve made. They are experiences you don t want to miss! Norfolk 4-H Website: Page 5 of 7
6 Club Requirements (Please note: the 4-H club year runs November 1 st to October 31 st ) Cloverbud Members Must attend four 2 hour meetings and complete a judging event. **Please speak to your leaders if you are unable to attend the Norfolk judging event.** At the banquet after you ve earned your credits for the first year, you will receive a plaque. In the second and third year, you will receive a year bar for your plaque. 4-H Members To earn credit for your clubs during the year, you must: Attend a minimum of two-thirds of the total meetings for each club. For example, if your club runs six 2 hour meetings, you must attend 4 meetings or 8 hours. A club will have a minimum of six 2 hour meetings, but some clubs may run more than six meetings. Also, please note: some clubs run consecutive meetings, while others do not; and some clubs are always held in the same location while others visit various places throughout the county and sometimes beyond. Also, there are certain livestock clubs that compete in fairs that take place late in the summer and in early fall. Complete each club s achievement assigned by the leaders. Some club achievements are showing an animal at the fair, others may be an entry prepared for the fair or something completely different. Please be sure to check with your leader if you are unsure of the club achievement. Attend one association judging event during the year, whether it s the one held by Norfolk 4-H or another county s 4-H association. **Remember that if you attend a judging event outside of Norfolk, you must get a note from that association on the day you attend as documented proof that you were there. The note must give your name, 4-H membership number, the leader s name, the association and their contact information. Please be sure that this note is given to our Awards Contact, Lorraine Vogel who can be reached by phone at or by at rvogel@nornet.on.ca so you can be given credit for attending the judging event.** At the banquet after you ve earned your first club credit, you will receive a plaque, a certificate and your 1 st project seal (a sticker to put on your certificate.) After the first project seal, you will receive your next project seal when you ve earned 6 clubs and then again for each 6 club additional club credits earned after that (6, 12, 18, etc.) Awards are given at certain levels of club credits, but not at all levels. You will receive a year bar for your plaque each year. Norfolk 4-H Website: Page 6 of 7
