2 Welcome to Our 12th Annual Bull Sale! Box 578, Claresholm, Alberta T0L 0T0 Dear Friends, WELCOME!!! This year marks Willabar Ranch s 70th year raising Purebred Black Angus Cattle, something that Andy and I are very proud of. As I listen to Orrin and Andy tell stories of the past it s amazing the difference 70 years can make! This year also represents the 12th year we have been offering Long Yearling Black Angus Bulls. For those who are unfamiliar with our program, we breed for balance, not extremes. When we are selecting for herd sires, growth, performance and maternal traits are extremely important as well. At calving time we strive for as little hands on contact as possible with our cows to take full advantage of calving on grass. Poor udders and dispositions are not tolerated and we strive to eliminate them as they appear. We pasture the bulls after weaning until they come home for yearling weights; the bulls then are fed a silage/hay/grain total mix ration with a Viterra mineral package starting early October. The bulls receive Pfizer Gold at pre-weaning and ANDY, RAMONA, NATHAN & KATIE HART post-weaning and ivermectin is administered in November. As you see, when you peruse the catalogue, the average age of our bulls is 17 months, which would make them about 21 months old for a June 1st turnout. They are bigger, more sexually mature and able to breed more cows than the average yearling. As a service to you when selecting your herd sires, at semen testing, we will test the bulls for BVD. Foot Rot vaccine will also be given at that time. Scrotal measurements will be available sale day. We are selling our bulls by video again this year. We are finding this method to be very beneficial for both ourselves and the bulls. You, as well, have a better opportunity to see these guys in their home environment. Yours truly, Andy & Ramona Hart Ph: / Fax: We Will be Selling the Bulls on Sale Day on VIDEO The bulls will be available for viewing in pens adjacent to the sale barn before and during the sale but will not physically enter the barn during the sale. They will, instead, appear in a video clip (the same one minute of footage from the DVD) on a projection screen that will run continuously until each animal is sold. We do recommend that you come prior to sale day or allow yourselves enough time to study the animals closely prior to the commencement of the auction. Those in attendance have commented that they felt it was important to study all of the bulls prior to the sale and have an extensive list of potential selections to avoid disappointment. Remember, live bulls do not enter a sale ring. We believe the opportunity to view the bulls in larger pens, where they are more comfortable, serves our buyers well. Our experience last year proved the video sale reduces stress on both bulls and people. When we made Dateline the high selling lot at the 2006 Cooke Livestock Bull Sale. We had tremendous confidence in the maternal side of his pedigree - Willabar Patricia 45C. The longevity, udder and foot quality of the Patricia cows in his pedigree is indisputable and is showing up in his daughters. Dateline is a massive bull and yet is very athletic. Rawburn Angus of Scotland has recently secured the European rights to Dateline and are expecting their first embryo calves to be born this spring C REF. 18 Buyers Notes EPD Explanation ExPECTED PRoGEny DiFFEREnCES (EPDS) Statistics generated for individual cattle through national genetic evaluations. EPDs: 4 allow breeders to estimate a young animal s breeding value as a parent 4 allow a fair comparison of breeding value by removing environmental bias such as climate, feed and special management 4 best tool available to compare animals between herd, countries and year of birth 4 help breeders make informed decisions regarding breeding stock selection by evaluating numerous traits such as growth-related traits (BW, WW, YW, Milk), carcass (REA, FAT, %IMF, etc.) and reproductive efficiency (CE, MCE, SC) 4 estimate the group performance of one parent compared to the group performance of another parent, assuming similar mates EPD s evaluate group averages and offspring s performance. They can not predict individual performance or weights. For example, if Bull A (weaning weight EPD of +10) and Bull B (WW of +60) were randomly mated with ten similar cows, we would expect the group average weaning weight of Bull A s offspring to be 50 lbs. lighter than that of Bull B s (60-10 = 50). To evaluate seedstock, use EPDs, pedigree and visual assessment. With EPDs, the concept of intermediate optimums works best. Selection for one trait or for extremes generally results in unexpected consequences due to genetic correlations - for example, intense selection for high yearling weight will also increase birth weight. Successful cattle breeding requires a thoughtful and balanced approach to optimize fertility, growth and carcass merit while improving profitability and efficiency.
