A new year always brings the promise of new opportunities in 4-H. The Washington County 4-H program has many great things in store for the year, and we are excited for you to be a part of it. So get enrolled, pick a club, begin a project and get involved. Good Luck At The Washington County Fair The Washington County Extension Office would like to wish every exhibitor the best of luck in the upcoming Washington County Fair. There is no doubt that you have put a huge number of hours and an immeasurable amount of effort into your projects. We are proud of each of you and know you will ROCK IT! Washington County Fair Eligibility Requirements In order to stay eligible to show at the Washington County Fair, 4-H members must satisfy these three requirements: 1. You must have an ACTIVE profile on 4-H Connect for the year. Without an active profile, you are not a 4-H member, and not eligible to show. 2. You must have attended at least five 4-H club meetings since October 2017 (First year exhibitors must have attended 50% of their meetings from the time they enrolled.) 3. You must have attended the required number of species project meetings as outlined in the JLA Handbook.

2 Livestock Project Help If you would like to schedule a project visit, call or Charles at the Extension Office to schedule a time to meet. We are happy to help any family that would like for us to check out their project and answer any questions they may have. If you need help seeking and purchasing an animal project for the 2018 Washington County Fair, feel free to contact Charles at the Extension Office. If you need help clipping your animal for the Fair, please be sure to schedule a date and time with Charles. Clipper Rental The Washington County 4-H program has livestock clippers available for rent to 4-H families. The clipper rental costs $5 to use and you can schedule your date with Charles at CLSeely@ag.tamau.edu for the rental. You will be required to fill out a rental agreement. If clippers or blades come back damaged, you will be responsible for paying for the cost of the damage. Please note that the clipper schedule will be in three hour blocks from September Clippers Available: Lister Star Clippers (2 Sets) Blades Available: Extra Cover Cote (Steers and Goats) Cover Cote (Steers and Goats) Fine Blades (Sheep) Surgical Blades (Sheep Only) Washington County Fair Schedule & Rule Book The 2018 Washington County Fair Junior Livestock Association rulebook can be found here. You can find the Commercial Cattle rulebook here. Please be sure to familiarize yourself with the general rules as well as the rules for your individual species.

3 Fair Queen Candidates Washington County Fair season has officially begun with the announcement of the 2018 Washington County Fair Queen Candidates. We would like to wish the best of luck to the two candidates representing the Washington County 4-H program. If you are in need of Fair Passes, contact Mary Caroline Bearden & Hannah Warmke. 8 Upcoming Major Show Validation Dates Major Show Sheep and Goat Validation October 23rd from 5:00-6:00pm Fairgrounds Barn 1 Major Show Hog Validation November 26th and 27th from 5:00-7:00pm Fairgrounds Barn 2 Major Show Heifer Physical Validation October Fairgrounds Barn 2 Make sure to have colored, scanned copy of your heifer s original registration paperwork to the Extension Office by Friday, October 19th. all registration papers to Stephanie Rudolph at: Stephanie.rudolph@ag.tamu.edu. With the exception of Breeding Heifers, in order to validate an animal project at a Major Show, you must first purchase a validation tag. In order to purchase a validation tag, fill out and complete the tag order form and bring it to the Extension Office with payment. Shooting Sports Shooting Sports practices will begin the first Monday and Tuesday in October with Air Rifle and Archery. If you are interested in participating in the Shooting Sports Project, please contact the Extension Office for more information.

9 District 11 4-H Crossroads District 11 4-H Crossroads is a career exploration event that allows 4-H members the opportunity to learn more about different career paths that could be of interest to them. The 2018 event will once again be held at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX. For more information about Crossroads, you can head to the District 11 4-H Website at: : d114h.tamu.edu/events-and-contests/crossroads/. The deadline to register on 4-H Connect is October 12th.

13 Updated Quality Counts System The Texas 4-H Youth Livestock Office has rolled out the new Quality Counts program, that can be found at the following web address: Please note that current Quality Counts numbers are ok to use for the 2018 Washington County Fair, 2018 State Fair of Texas and 2018 Heart of Texas. However, EVERYONE will have to retake the test and become verified if the plan to show at a Spring 2019 Major Show (Houston, San Antonio, Fort Worth, San Angelo, Austin, RGV, Odessa) as well as the 2019 Washington County Fair. Here are a couple of new components of the program to be aware of: Exhibitors will first be required to engage in the full learning content before being presented with the verification exam. Please be aware of this in advance as this could take around two hours for most students to complete the full content and test. Exhibitors will be able to start and revisit the curriculum as many times as needed. Exhibitors will have to complete the test once it is started. Exhibitors must achieve 80% or great to pass the exam, but can take it as many times as needed. Exhibitors will be exposed and tested on the content potentially three times in their livestock showing career: junior (grade 3-5), intermediate (grade 6-8), and senior (grade 9-12). Exhibitors will access the course and exam at a new website: This will be connected to the current Texas Livestock Validation Website for ease -of-access to information for supervising County Extension Agents and Agricultural Science Teachers. Verification on the new system will be required for entries into Spring major livestock shows. **Verification on the old system is acceptable for State Fair of Texas and Heart 'O Texas Fair entries.** However, exhibitors may use their new number for these shows if they get verified before entry.
