3 INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE 2016 OHIO STATE JUNIOR FAIR HORSE SHOW EXHIBITORS (County offices should duplicate and distribute this information to all youth qualifying by PAS for the Junior Fair Horse Show). Dear Junior Fair Exhibitor: Congratulations on qualifying to show at the Ohio State Fair Junior Horse Show! With this honor comes a lot of responsibility in the areas of cooperation, sportsmanship, and public image of 4-H and FFA. This is a large horse show, but a small part of the Ohio State Fair. There are many situations at the Ohio State Fair that we cannot control. We appreciate your flexibility and cooperation. REGISTRATION, PARKING, FEES, CHECK-IN AND CHECK-OUT 1. The show is Monday, July 25, (beginning at 12:00pm) through Friday, July 29. See the show schedule for the list of classes. Horses may be checked in starting at 7:00 a.m. Monday, July 25. The Junior Fair Show Office will be open Monday Friday between 7:00am 10:00pm. 2. Parking: If you arrive before July 27, you will be charged a parking fee of $5 to park on top of the Gilligan complex (no trailers). If you arrive on or after July 27, you will have an opportunity to purchase a 3-day parking pass for $30. Only one parking pass per exhibitor is allowed. If you do not purchase a parking pass, you will be required to park in general parking for $5 per day. There is a shuttle service from the general parking area with a stop near the horse barn. 3. Upon arrival at the state fairgrounds and before checking in at the show office, stop at the Stall Office (located in the grey trailer beside the viaduct at the northwest end of Gilligan Complex) to get your stall assignment. Bring your online entry receipt. If your name is not on the list of online entries and you do not have your receipt, you will be charged another $40 stall fee. 4. Horses will be stalled on a first come, first serve basis. Exhibitors may request to be stalled together when getting stall assignments but only if the online entry receipt for each exhibitor is provided at the time of the request. Stall decorations may be used to promote your county. 5. Tack Stalls: Community tack stalls are provided in every aisle at no additional cost. Do not leave valuable show or personal items unattended. Do not lock the community tack stalls!! A limited number of private tack stalls will be available for purchase ($40) at the Stall Office, based on the number of entries per county and will be available on a first come, first serve basis. 6. The show may involve up to 1200 exhibitors and horses. Limited unloading space makes registration a challenge. If traffic becomes congested or other emergencies occur, please follow directions as given by the State Highway Patrol. After quickly stabling your horse and unloading tack, take your trailer to the designated parking lot in the North Parking Lot. Then return and check-in at the Junior Fair Horse Show Office, at the end of the green wall that separates the horse and dairy sides of the barn (Gilligan Complex). 7. Each exhibitor must bring a signed medical form to check-in at the Junior Horse Show Office in order to be allowed to show. Youth 18 and over may sign for themselves, others must have a parent or guardian sign the medical form. 8. Class patterns will be posted in the show office and a pattern book will also be available for purchase. 9. Exhibitors will be given two exhibitor numbers. Safety pins to attach the exhibitor numbers are the exhibitor s responsibility. 10. Please be sure to keep your area clean. This includes your stall and aisle way. We are viewed by the public and impressions last a long time. 11. If you must wash your horse, please use only the wash racks designated for horses on the northwest side of the building. Do not wash horses in the dairy wash racks or in the aisle of the horse barn. 12. HORSES ARE NOT ALLOWED ON ANY PART OF THE FAIRGROUNDS OTHER THAN THE IMMEDIATE SHOW AREAS. HORSES SHOULD USE DESIGNATED BRIDLE PATHS WHEN WALKING TO AND FROM THE SHOW RINGS. 13. Horses must be checked out by 9 a.m. of the day after their last class except on Friday. On Friday, all horses must be checked out by 9 p.m. or as soon as possible after the end of the show. Exceptions for any day but Friday are allowed if horses are being trailered with other horses still showing. These exceptions must be noted at check-in. A horse may leave and come back if needed without paying an additional stall fee, but show management must approve this. Stall releases for check-out are available at the Stall Office. All horses must check-out prior to leaving the fairgrounds. AWARDS Each class, except for dressage and championship classes, will receive the following premium money: 1st - $15.00; 2nd - $10.00; 3rd - $8.00. Each exhibitor will receive a participation ribbon and all classes will receive ten placing ribbons. MEASURING: All animals showing in Gymkhana Classes will be measured. Animals may show in a class for animals larger than they are, but never in classes smaller than they are. Measuring will be done in an area adjacent to the registration office. All animals showing in pony classes will be measured as presented. Ponies may be altered and re-measured only one time before registration, and this measurement is final. Measured animals must show (barefoot or shod) as measured. BIT INSPECTION: All exhibitors, regardless of discipline, must present their bridle for bit inspection upon check-in and registration. Bit inspection will be done in an area adjacent to the registration office. Upon approval, the bit will be tagged for identification purposes for the duration of the show. If a bit has not been inspected, approved and tagged, the exhibitor will not be allowed to show. SHOW SCHEDULES AND RULES The show schedule and rules can be found in the 2016 Ohio State Fair Livestock Book and online at The Uniform Rules (10/14 Revision) for 4-H horse shows will be the guide that the Steward uses. Exhibitors should read and be familiar with this publication. SHOW CLASSES 1. You may enter a TOTAL of four (4) classes. This includes Ground Roping. 2. You are responsible for entering your classes and paying your $40 stall fee online at by noon on JULY 11. IF YOUR ENTRY IS LATE, YOU CANNOT SHOW. Ohio 4-H Dressage Show entries are due July 1 st and must be sent directly to the State 4-H Horse Office, 2029 Fyffe Ct., Columbus, OH The County 4-H Extension Professional will submit all of your county s entries by to Barb Prince on an Excel spreadsheet provided to each county to verify PAS qualifying scores only. 3. Class changes at State Fair will be allowed ONLY in the event of an incorrect age of youth or incorrect size of animal. 4. It is the exhibitor s responsibility to be to their class on time. You will have to estimate what time each class will start. No class will be delayed for late exhibitors. 4 TO: FROM: Junior Fair Horse Show Exhibitors Virgil Strickler, General Manager Thank you for your entry into the 2016 Ohio State Fair, July 25 - July 29. All youth age 19 and under, participating in any 4-H equestrian activity, are required to wear properly fitted protective headgear which meets or exceeds current ASTM (American Society for Testing Materials) SEI (Safety Equipment Institute) standards with the chin harness securely fastened at all times while riding or driving an equine. It is the responsibility of the rider, or the parent or the guardian of the youth participant, to make sure that the headgear worn complies with appropriate safety standards for protective headgear intended for equestrian use, and is properly fitted and in good condition. The Ohio 4-H Horse Program, show committees, officials, Extension personnel, and volunteer leaders are not responsible for checking headgear worn for such compliance. The Ohio 4-H Horse Program, show committees, officials, extension personnel, and volunteer leaders make no representation or warranty, expressed or implied, about any protective headgear, and cautions riders that death or serious injury may result despite wearing such headgear, as no helmet can protect against all foreseeable injuries in equestrian activities. The Ohio 4-H Horse Program, show committees, officials, extension personnel, and volunteer leaders may, at his/her discretion, check a participant's protective headgear for proper standards. If the youth is found to be wearing unapproved, defective, or improperly fitted headgear, he/she is not permitted to participate in riding or driving activities until proper headgear is acquired.
