1 MINI 4-H HANDBOOK WHITLEY COUNTY 2014 L e x p l a r n i F u n g o F r i e n d s e Mini 4-H

2 Welcome to the Mini 4-H Program! Mini 4-Hers have lots of fun! There are many activities for you to explore. You can try new things. You can share them with your friends and family. Here are some things to know about 4-H. The 4-H symbol is a four-leaf clover with an H in each leaf. Clover is a plant that grows in fields, yards, and along roadsides. Most clovers have three leaves. Sometimes, if you look very carefully, you may get lucky and find a special clover with four leaves. A four-leaf clover is used as the symbol for 4-H to let everyone know 4-H is a special kind of group. The four H s stand for Head, Heart, Hands and Health. The 4-H colors are green and white. The four-leaf clover is green and the H in each leaf is white. The 4-H motto is To make the best better. When something is better than all of the others, it is the best. Think about a time when you did your best. Maybe you threw a ball farther than you have ever thrown it before. Now, think about some ways you could do better. You may be able to throw farther by practicing for a while or by watching someone who can throw farther than you have ever thrown it before. There are still ways that you can do better the next time. 4-H encourages you to always try to do better, even if you are doing the best you have ever done. The 4-H Pledge A pledge is a promise you make to yourself and to the people around you. The 4-H pledge is in bold print below. Under each line of the pledge there are words telling what the pledge means. I pledge my Head to clearer thinking. The promise to use my head to make good choices. My heart to greater loyalty. To use my heart to be a good friend. My Hands to larger service, and To use my hands to do helpful things for others. My Health to better living To take care of my body and to show others how to live a healthy way. For my club, my community, my country and my world. To help my group, my community, my country, and my world be happy and safe for everyone. Dear Parent/Guardian, Mini 4-H is offered by: Purdue Extension Whitley County Office 115 S Line St Columbia City, IN or www3.ag.purdue.edu/counties/whitley

3 We welcome you and your child (ren) to the Whitley County Mini 4-H Program. Mini 4-H is designed for boys and girls in Kindergarten, First and Second Grades. Mini 4-H is a program that encourages children to explore several projects that interest them at a noncompetitive level. We do not limit them to a certain number of projects but do encourage your child to complete all projects chosen. They will display their completed projects at the Whitley County 4-H Fair and will be awarded a special Mini 4-H ribbon for each project completed. Mini 4-H serves as an introduction to the traditional 4-H program. The 4-H er is able to gain selfconfidence and increase their self-esteem. It provides youth guidance while learning a variety of skills. Youth develop skills and pride in their ability to complete and display their projects at a noncompetitive level. Your job as a Mini 4-H parent is to guide your child in any way that you can, but we suggest you don t do the project(s) for your child. These are your children s projects and will be a teaching and learning experience for them. So guide your child, help them read the material, but let your child do as much of the project by themselves as they can. Each of the 17 different project s requirements are in this Handbook. There are activities and an exhibit to work on. Your child should bring their completed exhibit and record sheet, signed by a parent, to the Whitley County 4-H Fair. Sometimes events happen an animal dies, it doesn t rain, it is too cool, a sibling breaks the model, someone get sick in the family or other disasters that are beyond your control. Your child can still complete their project by turning in the completed record sheet, without the exhibit. We hope by encouraging completion, the exhibit and record sheet or just the record sheet, your child will learn valuable skills and will have the satisfaction of completing the Mini 4-H program. This publication will contain all of the information you will need to complete your projects 4) When you receive the monthly Extension Educator Newsletter, find the dates and times of programs, meetings, and activities you want to attend. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Is the $5.00 fee for each project I take? The $5.00 fee is per child.

7 How many projects may I take? The number and types of projects that you select depends on your interests and the amount of time that you have. If this is your first year, we encourage you to take 1 or 2 projects and if you decide that you have time to complete others you may sign up for additional projects with your Mini 4-H Leader or at the Extension Office by June 1 st. If you like the selection and take many projects, we encourage completion in all the projects that you signed up for. If you discover you are running out of time and signed up for too many projects, please let your Mini 4-H Leader or Extension Office know so we can drop that particular project from your enrollment form by June 1 st. Do I need to have an animal if I sign up for any of the animal projects? No. We encourage you to have the pets at your house. For alpaca, beef, dairy goat, dairy, horse & pony, llama, poultry, swine and sheep you do not need to live on a farm to take these projects. We do encourage you to visit someone who has these animals so you learn more about how to take care and how to show these animals. I am in Kindergarten but will go to 1 st grade next fall. What grade do I sign up for in Mini 4-H? On the enrollment form you will be signing up and listing the grade that you are in right now during the current school year. You will keep that same grade until the end of the 4-H year. Do I need to attend the Mini 4-H meetings? We encourage you to attend the Mini 4-H meetings because we have planned a lot of interesting activities and special people for you to meet that will pertain to your projects. Are my parents invited to the Mini 4-H activities? We would like for parents to attend at least the first 15 minutes while we share many details on the projects and 4-H fair information. This is also a good time to ask questions. We would appreciate any help that parents can give that day; however, if parents leave, they need to return by the scheduled ending time. When should I start my project? Allow plenty of time to complete your projects without rushing. The first thing you should do is read this Handbook and learn about the projects. Have a place where you can work and not be disturbed by siblings. Weekends, snow days and spring breaks are good times to work on your projects. Don t try to do too much at one time but, do continue to work on your projects so you don t run out of time in July. Just remember when the weather gets nice, there is a tendency not to think about 4-H projects so you might set up a deadline like June 1 st. Please remember to bring your projects to the 4-H Fair in July. We sure would like to see all the good work that you have completed. Will I be able to show my animals at the 4-H Fair? No. For the health and safety of Mini 4-H ers and your projects, you will not be showing animals at the 4-H Fair. These are just a few questions that we thought you might have. If you have additional questions please talk to us at any of the Mini 4-H events or call us. Every question that you have is important to us. The key is to start now and not wait until the week before the fair to start your projects. Mini 4-H Members may attend and observe at traditional 4-H Meetings. You may be able to participate in activities with the 4-H Leader s permission. You will not receive privileges as a regular 4-H Member since you are enrolled in the Mini 4-H Program.

13 Mini 4-H Liability Release Form Below is a copy of the liability form you (the parent) signed if your child enrolled in a Mini 4-H project involving animals. The safety and well-being of our 4-H youth is of the utmost importance. Although kindergarten is specified as the time when a child may begin participation in some 4-H events and activities, parents are encouraged to take into consideration their child s physical and mental development before agreeing to let the child begin to show, work with, or care for animals. Each child matures at a different rate, and children in grades K-2 may still be too young to begin showing, working with, or caring for animals. The Indiana 4-H Youth Program at Purdue University has agreed to allow Mini 4-H members in grades K-2, to participate in NON-COMPETITIVE animal projects subject to certain conditions. These conditions are specified below: Mini 4-H members, in grades K through 2, will be allowed to show, work with, or care for animal projects after their parent or legal guardian has signed a liability release. Mini 4-H members may independently show, work with, or care for animals that weigh 300 pounds or less. Mini 4-H members may only show, work with, or care for animals over 300 pounds when they are assisted by a parent, legal guardian, or another adult designated in writing by parent or legal guardian. (The word assisted means that the adult has control of the animal at all times.) Mini 4-H members exhibiting horses must wear ASTM or SEI standard F1163 (or above) certified helmets whenever mounted. The parent/guardian is responsible to see that this specified headgear is properly fitted with the approved harness in place and fastened whenever a rider is mounted. I understand that participating in 4-H activities can involve certain risks to my child. On behalf of my child I accept those risks. I hereby release and discharge Purdue University, The Trustees of Purdue University, the Whitley County Commissioners, the Whitley County Cooperative Extension Service, and each of their trustees, officers, appointees, agents, employees, and volunteers ("Released Parties") from all claims which my child or I might have for any injury or harm to my child, including death, arising out of my child s participation in a Mini/Exploring 4-H animal activity(ies), even if such injury or harm is caused by any of the Released Parties. I do not, however, release these individuals and entities from liability for intentional, willful or wanton acts and this release shall not be construed to include such acts.
