1 Wichita 4-H Notes Texas Oklahoma Fair Dorper Show On September 17 th, 2013 Dorper sheep ascended upon the Texas Oklahoma Fair grounds for the first time ever. Wichita county 4-Hers were on hand with their prized sheep during this new event. Afterwards, a free "Dorper 101" Seminar was held, with participants being shown with live sheep covering what the ideal dorper breeding sheep should look like. The event was organized by 4-H volunteer Sarah Fung. 2 Delivery of School Supplies August 13, Sarah Mohr, Robert Speed, Karen Speed and Maranda Revell traveled to Bethel, Oklahoma to deliver supplies from the State 4-H School Supply Drive. This program was originally brought forth by Kathleen Duncan (4-H Mom), adopted by Actors Creating Together, then by Wichita County 4-H followed by Texas 4-H at State 4-H Roundup. Youth from across the state donated supplies and the effort earned Kathleen KAUZ s Community Service Champion Award. Over 5000 items were delivered! That s the way we work together!

3 County Food Show Results The H year is off to a strong start. The 2013 Wichita County 4-H Food Show was held October 1 at the Courtyard by Marriott hotel in Wichita Falls. Twenty two Wichita County 4-H members representing Actors Creating Together, Adventures, Burkburnett and Explorers clubs vied for top honors. Exhibitors submitted and cooked food items according to their age division and food category. First place winners in each age division and food category advance to the Rolling Plains District 3 4-H Food Show Saturday, October 26, in Vernon. Schaeffer, Actors Creating Together 4-H 4-Hers were interviewed by adult volunteer judges. The 4-Her had to explain the importance of the MyPlate guidelines, how they prepared their dish, principles of nutrition, food safety issues, leadership, community service and food and nutrition project activities. The contest was judged by Sherrie Rucker, Bob Parmer, Aerial Thane, Ami Blackmon, Kyle Gilliam, Rachel Mohr and Sarah Mohr. Cookbooks containing all recipes prepared for the County 4-H Food Show are on sale for $5 at the County Extension Office.

4 If you intend to show a lamb or a goat at the Wichita County Junior Livestock Show or any major show in 2014, please mark October 23rd on your calendar. Animals will be validated between 3:30-8:00 at the Iowa Park FFA Barn. If there is a problem with this day or time, please get with Maranda a minimum of 2 days BEFORE. DO NOT UNLOAD ANY ANIMAL BEFORE COMPLETING YOUR PAPER- WORK. You will be asked to put the animal back on the trailer. Food Challenge The Food Challenge is highly charged foods experience. Modeled after such competitions as Iron Chef and Chopped, teams of 4-H members create a dish using only preassigned ingredients. From these ingredients, 4-H members must identify, prepare and then present information related to the serving size, nutritional value, and cost of the dish. County food challenge entries will be due to Maranda by October 16 at a cost of $10.00 per team. County Food Challenge will be held on October 22 at 6:00. You must compete locally to advance to district. District food challenge entries will be due to Maranda by October 25 before 5:00. Charges will apply. District Food Challenge is scheduled for November 13 in Jacksboro. Nutrition Quiz Bowl Nutrition Quiz Bowl helps 4-H members enhance and demonstrate their knowledge and skills in a competitive setting. The Quiz Bowl contest involves teams of 3 or 4 members. Two teams compete against each other at one time, answering questions related to nutrition. Questions are asked from the materials in the current official reference list. (See Maranda for this list). There is no county contest for this event, but district paperwork is required. The district entries will be due to Maranda by November 22 before 5:00. The district contest is scheduled for December 11 in Seymour. Lamb & Goat Validation
