2 Atascosa 4-H Club Info 4 H is a learn by doing youth education program for children 9 to 19. It promotes positive values, social responsibility, and lifelong learning. An af iliated program, Clover Kids, is available in some areas for children 5 to 7 (K to 2). Through 4 H and the opportunities it provides, 4 H members have the ability to participate in many events and activities, as well as apply for scholarships, travel the country, and meet new friends. Enrollment begins in August. 4 Las Colchas Project Outing We had a great visit to Los Colchas in San Antonio to learn about fabric, sewing and quilting. 6 Fashion Show The County Fashion Show was held on March 2 nd at the Extension Office. All contestants will be able to go on to the District 12 competition. Results were: Reina Sofia Garcia, 1 st place Buying Semi-formal to Formal Junior Tahlisa McGinnis, 1 st place Buying Fantastic Fashions under $25, Junior Xochitl Hernandez, 1 st place Construction Semi-formal to Formal, Junior Mallory Fey, 1 st place Construction Re- Fashion, Junior Evelyn Caraway, 1 st place Construction Everyday Living, Intermediate L to r Riena Garcia, Tahlisa McGinnis, Xochitl Hernandez, Evelyn Caraway. 6 County Roundup & Share the Fun County Roundup and Share the Fun was held on March 1 st at the Extension Center. Ethan Ayala and his brother Ely Rankin gave Educational Presentations in the Beef Category. Ethan spoke on the topic of choosing the right show calf and Ely told us about meat cuts of beef. Layton Shearrer performed in the vocal category, singing the song Wagon Wheel. Mallory Fey gave a Family and Consumer Science Educational Presentation centering on the My Plate guidelines. Madison Maglievaz chose the Public Speaking category and spoke on the subject of cattle genetics. They will all go on to the District 12 Roundup/Share the Fun Competition in Kingsville April 7th, 2018.

Nomina on forms are due to the Extension Office on Thursday, April 26, 2018 and can be brought in, faxed to or ed to Atascosa 4-H Officer Meeting Information Council will meet May 3, 2018 at 6:45pm Extension Office Auditorium. Ambassadors will meet May 3, 2018 at 6:00pm Extension Office Cafeteria. Atascosa 4-H Recordbooks Make plans to attend a 4-H Recordbook Workshop on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at 6:30p.m. in the Extension Office Auditorium. District 12 4-H Specialist, Mr. Luis Saldana will be on hand to present the how to s of compiling information for this valuable documentation of your 4-H career. All Recordbooks for the county 4-H contest are due to the Atascosa Extension office on Tuesday, June 19, About Recordbooks: Why is it important you keep a record of your 4-H activities? Because, by recording your activities you can remember all the fun you ve had so far, and set future goals! Keeping records of 4-H projects could help you when you apply for college scholarships too! 4-H Recordbooks are books you make to record your annual projects. The At a Glance Guide will help you organize your Recordbook. The following resources for students and parents can be found on the Texas 4-H website at: Atascosa County Farm Bureau is once again participating with Texas Food Connection Week 2018 and hosting a Food Collection Drive as part of a statewide community service effort. Atascosa 4-H members are asked to participate by donating nonperishable food items. Donations can be brought to the Texas Farm Bureau office in Jourdanton, located at 910 Oak Street or to the Atascosa County Extension office in Leming, located at 25 E. 5th Street. Donations will be accepted until April 28,

8 4-H STAR AWARD APPLICATIONS DUE Tuesday, June 19, 2018 Gold Star Award Member must be at least 15 at the time of application and must have completed at least 3 years in 4-H, including current year. The 4-H member must have submitted a Record book to be considered for the award. The 4-H member must have completed projects in three different project are-as, have submitted appropriate record forms, and have participated in one or more activities. Silver Star Award Must be 12 at the time of application but not have reached their 15th birthday as of September 1st of the current year Bronze Star Award Must be 9 or in the third grade but not have reached their 12th birthday by September 1st of the current year. All applicants must be prepared to interview on July 16th. Applications due 6/19/2018 Are you interested in having fun and promoting 4-H with our team. Apply now to become and Atascosa 4-H Ambassador!! Member must have reached or will have reached their 14th birthday by August 31st. Applications can be downloaded from our website at If you are an Intermediate age 4-H member, you may apply to be a Junior Ambassador and will promote 4-H along side Sr. Ambassadors. 9 4-H Dog Project Dog project will be meeting on April 12 th and 26 th at 6pm at the Extension Office Auditorium. The 4-H k9 group will be participating in a fundraiser for Atascosa Animal Allies on April 28 th at Primo s Feed and Supply at 1347 W. Oaklawn. They will be having a bake sale to raise money to care for the animals in the new County animal shelter TEXAS 4-H DOG SHOW IMPORTANT DATES May 10, 2018 Regular Dog Show Registration closes on 4-H CON- NECT May 11, 2018 to May 17, H CONNECT open for Late registration $50 late registration fee. County set deadline - All Agility Release forms due to County Office County Set Deadline Friday, July 13 to Sunday, July 15, 2018 TEXAS 4-H DOG SHOW in Belton, Texas at Bell County Expo 4-H Horse Validation March 1 to May 1 Validation is required for showing at District or State horse shows. The horse MUST be owned solely by the 4-H member, his/her parents, brother, sister, grandparents, or legal guardian. Horses under lease to, but not owned by any of the named persons, do NOT qualify. Horses owned in partnership or jointly with any person other than those previously listed do NOT meet ownership requirements. The horse validation process will be completed on 4-H Connect. As Validation cost for each horse is $10.00 from March 1 April 15. From April 16 May 1 validation cost for each horse is $ Late validations will be accepted from May 2 to 5th at $250 per horse. Absolutely no horses will be validated after May 5th. Several new additions to the State 4-H Horse Show this year include a Quad Drill class, jackpots for speed, roping, and ranch sorting and expanded scholarship opportunities. 10 2018 District 12 4 H Roundup The 2018 District 12 4-H Roundup will be held on Saturday, April 7, 2018 at Texas A&M University Kingsville located at 955 University Blvd. in Kingsville, Texas. Check-in on the day of Roundup will begin at 9:00 a.m. (Kleberg Ag. Bldg. Foyer), participant/judge s orientation will follow at 9:30 a.m. (Kleberg Ag Auditorium), and the contests will begin at 10:00 a.m. Rules and Guidelines: All contestants, leaders, and parents should be familiar with the 2018 District 12 4 H Roundup Rules and Guidelines and the 2018 Texas 4 H Roundup Rules and Guidelines. It is the responsibility of the contestants/parents to know the rules, time limits, etc. for the contests in which they plan on competing. 11 Did you know, there are contest opportunities that are OPEN to all Intermediate and Senior 4-H members? You do not have to qualify at a District event to be a part of Texas 4-H Roundup!! There are contest and workshop opportunities open to all 4-H members who are in the 6th 12th grades as of the September 1, 2017 school year. 14 2018 District 12 4-H Shoo ng Sports Smallbore Rifle Match (3-P) The District 12 4-H Shoo ng Sports Smallbore Rifle Match (3-P) will be held on April 28, 2018 at the Duval Shoo ng Complex in Benavides. This event serves as the Texas 4-H Roundup Rifle Match Qualifier. Event Registra on - Registra on for this event will be open to all coun es in District 12, with no limit on how many 4-H members can register from their county. Registra on will take place on 4-H Connect, and must be done by individual 4-H members. Coaches will not be able to register members, unlike the Postal League. Registra on will open March 27 th through the deadline of April 17 th at $15 per contestant. There will not be a late registra on period or on-site registra on. All contestants must be registered by the dates specified above. Match Informa on Standard Texas 4-H 3-P Rifle Rules apply except as noted on the District 12 4-H Shoo ng Sports Match: Guiding Principles and Contest Rules. Below are some important details to note about the Rifle Match. 3 Age Divisions (Junior, Intermediate, Senior) Posi ons & Record Targets Junior Prone (3 targets) Intermediate Prone (1 target), Kneeling (1 target), Standing (1 target) Senior - Prone (2 targets), Kneeling (2 targets), Standing (2 targets) All rifles must remain cased at all mes with an OBI (open-bolt indicator) un l instructed by range officer to uncase rifles. One rifle per case. Muzzle end of the case should be marked. Kneeling for Intermediates & Seniors cannot be subs tuted with si ng. While si ng is an alterna ve in training resources, shooters must compete using the kneeling posi on for this event. Par cipants are welcome to bring their own food/ refreshments as there will not be concessions available. It is important to note that there is no running water or electricity at the facility, however, portable restrooms will be available. Par cipants are welcome to bring RV s (plenty of space) but there are no hookups for electricity, water, or waste. You are welcome to bring your own power supply. Par cipants are also encouraged to bring their own shade (canopies) and chairs. All canopies must be properly and adequately secured to avoid safety issues. T-Shirt A custom-designed Shoo ng Sports Rifle Match t-shirt is available to be purchased by anyone online. The T-shirts will be distributed to agents at the event. Please contact the Extension Office if you are interested District 12 Contest The 2018 District 12 4-H Livestock Judging Contest will be held in coopera on with the District 10 Livestock Judging Contest on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at Mansfield Park, 2886 Hwy 16 North, Bandera, Texas The contest will be open to all three age divisions and follow the same guidelines outlined in the Texas 4-H Roundup Rules and Guidelines as they relate to this contest, except as noted within this and related correspondence. Registra on Registra on for this event will be through 4-H Connect star ng on March 20 th through the registra on deadline of April 10 th. Registra on should be completed by individual 4-H members. The registra on fee will be $20 per contestant. Contest Details The contest and registra on will be hosted at Mansfield Park in Bandera. Registra on will begin at 8 a.m. with a mandatory orienta on for all contestants at 9 a.m., so be prompt. The contest will begin immediately a er orienta- on. Team designa ons will be made on-site by coaches/volunteers on the day of the event. Juniors and Intermediates may be on the same team but must par cipate in the Intermediate Division. Seniors must compete in this contest to be eligible for a state qualifying posi on. Par cipants will be using standard livestock judging scanner forms which will be provided by the contest. The judging contest will be held in coopera on with District 10. However, results will be independent between districts through separate awards programs immediately a er the contest results are available. Contest Format Please note that the structure of this contest may change without no ce based on availability of quality livestock and species to ensure a high-quality contest and experience. Below are details related to classes that will be part of the contest: 9 or 10 classes including both market and breeding classes (Mkt Steer, Mkt Lamb, Mkt Goat, Mkt Hog, Brdg Ewes, Brdg Gilts, Brdg Heifers, Brdg Bulls w/ EPDs). This may change without no ce, but we will s ll make every effort to communicate classes closer to the event. Seniors 4 sets of reasons (1-Brdg, 3-Mkt) Intermediates 1 set of reasons (Mkt) and one set of ques ons Juniors 1 set of ques ons (Mkt). This will be calculated into their overall score & will be 5 ques ons. What to Bring All contestants should bring the following: Clipboard, Several sharpened #2 pencils with good erasers, & Blank paper for note-taking. It is important to remember that cell phones are strictly prohibited while compe ng. Keep cell phones tucked away un l done compe ng. A light snack will be provided for all contestants as they transi on from judging classes to preparing for reasons/ques ons (Int & Sr). District 12 4-H Spirit Shirt A custom-designed event t-shirt is available to be purchased by anyone online. The T-shirts will be distributed to agents at the event. The Outdoor Challenge Rules and Resource Guide can be found in the Contest section of: The 10 events for 2018 are: Shotgun Off-road Biking Archery Fishing Climbing Kayaking Biologist Skills Rifle Outdoor Safety Gear Judging There are a few changes to this year s rules, which have been highlighted in the Outdoor Challenge Rules and Resource Guide. Please fully review the document. Notably, there are changes to rifle & fishing. New This Year: We will limit registration to the first 50 teams (100 youth). This means that both members of the team must be registered on 4-H Connect to be considered in this count. Registration will open on May 1 and close on May 30 on 4-H Connect at texas.4honline.com. 19

26 On June 24-28, 2018, the Statewide Texas 4-H Calf Roping and Break-A-Way School will be held in Stephenville, Texas. The school will be held at the Tarleton State University Challenge Arena. The cost of the school will be $ for the week. There is a limited number of stalls--therefore, a maximum of one horse per applicant is allowed. Awards will be presented at the conclusion of the Roping School. Sign up will be on a first come-first serve basis. The maximum number which can be accommodated is 50. For more info, contact your club manager or our office at Please note the following: Registration is open based on a first applied first filled process; application and fee must be received via mail to be registered for the event. Approximately 50 youth will be accepted into the school. Once registration is full, an will be sent out statewide and any applications received after that will be placed on a waiting list. New this year: All participants ages 11 years old and younger must be chaperoned by a parent/guardian in the dorms.
