2 Volunteer Orientation 4-H works because of the adults that become volunteers. All 4-H volunteers are required to complete a one-time volunteer orientation. Volunteers may complete this requirement by attending an in-person session or online. Orientation needs to be completed before a volunteer s enrollment will be accepted. Online Orientation: Be sure to go all the way to the end of the module to where it asks your name, county, etc. If you do not, you will not be given credit for completion. Horse Enrollment Forms Horse project members hopefully have received a horse enrollment form in the mail. Forms are due into your local extension office no later than May 1. Your form will be returned to you with a copy retained in the extension office. You will need to keep the signatures complete and carry this information with you to 4-H horse shows. FFA members must also have this form on file to exhibit at the fair. Form: 17 th Annual 4-H Day with the St. Louis Cardinals Missouri and Illinois 4-H members, parents, volunteers and alumni will gather at Busch Stadium on Saturday, May 19, 2018 for the 17th annual 4-H Day with the Cardinals. The Cardinals will be playing the Philadelphia Phillies in a 1:15 p.m. game. Tickets for the game will be $25.00 each and includes a specially designed t-shirt featuring the 4-H Clover on the back and the Cardinals emblem on the front. 4-H members, leaders, alumni, and their families who purchase 4-H Day with the Cardinals tickets will have the opportunity to participate in a parade around the Busch Stadium outfield. Pre-game ceremonies will include a recitation of the 4-H pledge and ceremonial first pitches by an Illinois and Missouri 4-H member. As an added bonus the Cardinals give-away item for the game is a replica 1968 National League Championship ring. The first 30,000 fans age 16 and older will receive this one-of-a-kind item. Tickets for the event must be ordered on the 4-H Day with the Cardinals order form. Ticket order forms are available at the University of Missouri Extension office, or on the web at Ticket orders must be postmarked by April 9, Tickets usually sell out before the order deadline so families are encouraged to order early. 4-H Clubs, counties, or groups of families who would like to be seated together must send their orders in the same envelope. Natural Resources Careers Academy Want to learn about careers in natural resources? Up to 30 high school current juniors and sophomores (rising seniors and juniors, will graduate in 2019 and 2020) will be selected based on scholastic achievement and their interests in the natural world, conservation and environmental studies. Applicants must be Missouri residents. Postmark deadline for applications is April 20. Academy is free of charge. Academy dates July 8-13,

3 Life Sciences Quest Take some time out of your summer break and learn something new with University of Missouri s Life Science Quest program! Life Science Quest is an academy for students interested in agriculture and how it impacts our daily lives. Activities include hands-on experiences in biochemistry labs and research farms; tours of various science and research industries; discussing ethical issues in agriculture; and opportunities to learn from professionals in science-related industries. Program will be July for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Apply online by April Missouri 4-H Foundation Community Service Grants Through generous grants from Crader Distributing and local STIHLdealers.com as well as DuPont Pioneer, the Missouri 4-H Foundation offers grants up to $1,000 with match funding for a 4-H community service project. Projects are youth-driven and provide a great opportunity for youth to serve, work and develop life skills. For more information and to apply visit State 4-H Congress May 30-June 1, 2018 Mark your calendars now and get registered for the 2018 State 4-H Congress. Registration deadline is April 15. The State Council have worked hard to plan our event this year to be different and new!!! Sessions geared toward Career/College Readiness will be offered for several different Career Pathways. You will have a choice of selecting two different sessions in the morning on Thursday. The afternoon Leadership Sessions are all new subjects. New this year, delegates will have an opportunity to interact with MU athletics through tours and possible with coaches and/or athletes. MU College of Veterinary Medicine Open House: The ONEderful Wizard of PAWS Don t miss this year s College of Veterinary Medicine Open House, Saturday, April 21 9:00-3:00 p.m.. This event is free to the public. Watch the Purina Incredible Dogs perform, tour the Veterinary Health Center and try your hand at milking a cow the old-fashioned way. There will be informational lectures, including information on how to apply to the college, free wagon rides from the Missouri Mule Team, and much more. For more information: Kids and K-9 Camp Join us for a pawsitively great time at the 2018 Missouri State 4-H Kids & K-9 Camp June 7-9 at Camp Clover Point. A statewide 4-H camp for dog training, demos and fun. Come and learn training skills, meet new friends, and have fun with your dog! 4 Public Speaking Academy The 4-H Public Speaking Academy is preparing for its seventh year! Extension faculty, along with 4-H volunteers will provide educational workshops to help youth build their skills and comfort with public speaking. Participants will be guided through the basics and finer points of writing and delivering a speech. Youth will receive individual assistance. The camp is open to all youth years of age interested in learning more about public speaking. The Academy will be June 20-21, 2018 and registration is due May 17. Lodging will be provided on the campus of Central Methodist University in Fayette, Mo. The cost is $100. For more information, contact Patty Fisher at fisherp@missouri.edu or and be sure to download the brochure on the Missouri 4-H page at Announcing the Missouri 4-H Shooting Sports Ambassador Program Missouri 4-H Shooting Sports Ambassador Program is designed to promote 4-H and 4-H Shooting Sports. Youth selected to serve as Ambassadors will receive training that will allow them to return to their homes and advocate for the program at the county, regional, and state level. Ambassadors provide public relations support at special events such as donor/sponsor functions and also serve as spokespersons for the 4-H Shooting Sports Program, helping to make 4-H and the 4-H Shooting Sports Programs more visible. The Ambassador s further develop their skills in leadership, public presentation, citizenship, community service, public relations and team building. Applicants must be at least 12 years of age by January 1, 2018 to apply. It is recommended that the candidates also have at least one year left in 4-H. Application deadline line: May 15 PURPOSE, GOALS, OBJECTIVES The 4-H Shooting Sports Ambassador program will provide a venue for 4-H teens to: 1. Represent 4-H and specifically 4-H Shooting Sports for public relations purposes at special events; at donor/sponsor functions and with the general public, 4-H groups, community service organizations, schools and media contacts. 2. Serve as spokespersons for the 4-H Shooting Sports program at their respective levels of participation national, regional, state, county - helping to make 4-H Shooting Sports programs more visible. 3. Further develop their skills in leadership, public presentation, citizenship, community service, public relations and team building. 4. Assist in maintaining relations with 4-H Faculty and Extension Administrators as well as past, present and future program donors and supporters. 5. Continue and expand their involvement in 4-H Shooting Sports beyond the shooting skills and competitive events. 6. Stay actively connected with the 4-H Shooting Sports program as they enter their collegiate years and further into adulthood. This Program will serve as a gateway to becoming a National 4-H Shooting Sports Ambassador. Application packets are available on the Shooting Sports Ambassador webpage 4

JOANN will give a minimum of 2.5% of every eligible transaction to support 4-H programming. To learn more and to sign-up: Livestock Judging Day All youth interested in livestock judging are invited to participate in Northeast 4-H Livestock Judging Day at Pike County Fairgrounds, Bowling Green, MO, Saturday, June 16. Livestock judging enhances decisionmaking capabilities and provides the opportunity to defend those decisions through oral reasons. Participating youth build character, integrity, honesty, develop public speaking skills, and network with youth of similar interests. Participation in the county contest is required to qualify to be on the county team and compete at the state contest. One junior team (8-13 year olds) and one senior team (14-18 years old) will be selected from county contest participants. The state contest takes place in September in Columbia. Not interested in competing? Sign up for the clinic to learn more about the livestock judging. Participants will judge 6-8 classes. Juniors will provide reasons for 1 class, Seniors 2 classes. Preregistration is required by Friday, June 1. Registration forms will be available at the Extension office and on the county 4-H website. Shooting Sports State Shoot Dates August 18: State Skeet Shoot at Gateway Gun Club in St. Louis. August 25: State Trap Shoot at Missouri Trap Shooters in Linn Creek. August 25-26: Archery NFAA 300 round at Prairie Grove in Columbia. September 15-16: State Shoot All Disciplines in various locations. Missouri Sheep Producers Starter Flock Program Goal: To provide a current Missouri 4-H or FFA member a grant opportunity to purchase ewes for a starter flock. Reward: Up to three winners will receive a $600 grant to be used to purchase ewes from a current MSP member and work with this member in a mentoring program. The sheep purchased may be purebred, registered or commercial stock. Applications must be postmarked by May 15. Details at 5

6 Missouri 4-H Century Family The Missouri 4-H Century Family program recognizes 4-H families with long, sustained involvement in the 4-H program. Missouri 4-H Families with a combined 100 years or more of membership and/or volunteer service in 4-H will be recognized. Applications can be submitted at any time before July 1 to be recognized during the county recognition program. If your family has been involved with Missouri for 100 years you are encouraged to apply! Applications are available through the county website. 6

7 MONROE COUNTY 4-H NEWS County 4-H Website: 4-H Camp Leadership Camp: June Regular Camp: June Clover Kid Camp: June 21 Camp has been shown to be one of the most powerfully positive experiences any young person can have! Camp provides youth an opportunity to learn skills in responsibility, communication, teamwork, and more while having fun and making new friends. Camper registration forms are available on the county website and at the Extension office, due by April 2. Join us this summer for H Camp at Camp Coburn on the beautiful Mark Twain Lake in Florida, Missouri. Monroe County Fair Scholarship Graduating high school seniors are encouraged to apply for the Monroe County Fair Scholarship. Current 4-H and/or FFA members that exhibit and sell at the 2018 sale are eligible to apply. Applications are available on the county website and at the Extension Office. Applications are due Friday, May 4 to the Extension Office. Monroe County 4-H Completion Process Presentation Deadline May 31 If you were not at Achievement Day, you may make an appointment to come to the Extension Office to present your speech or demonstration by May 31. This is a requirement in order to complete your 4-H year and receive your yearly pin. 4-H and FFA Livestock & Ham Sale Contract Form If you intend to sell at the Monroe County Fair this year, you MUST turn in a contract form to the Extension Office by June 9 th at 4:30 p.m. indicating what you intend to sell. Forms are available in the Extension Office and online. 8 Club Reports Mark Twain March 4, 2018 On Sunday, March 4, 2018 members of Mark Twain 4-H Club met at Florida Presbyterian Church, with Ryan Breid leading the pledges. A brief meeting was held with 9 members, 12 leaders and 2 guests present. Members answered roll call with if their demonstration was finished and a report of projects were given. The treasurer report was given by Will Crain. All new leaders need to complete volunteer orientation online. Each family and members were presented with update to date meeting attendance record for the 4-H year. Show Me Quality Assurance training will be held on March 7, 2018 at 6 pm at the 4-H Building. We currently have three members that need to complete this training. Shooting Sports Safety Training will be Friday, February 23 rd, 6-9 pm and Saturday, February 24 th 9-noon at the Paris Library. All first year project members of shooting sports are required to attend both sessions. Hunter Safety class does not qualify for 4- H. It is that time of the year to collect for Fair Ads, please turn in Fair Ads with money. Achievement Day is Saturday, March 17 at 9:00 am at the Paris Elementary School. Everyone participating in Achievement Day must turn in pre-registration by Friday, March 9 th to the Monroe county Extension Office. A question and answer session was held about Achievement Day along with examples of demonstrations presented. 4-H Camp dates are June 18-22, There are several more important upcoming dates, please check your 4-H Newsletter. A couple of health tips were given by Jett Morgan; brush your teeth every day and wear sun screen. A safety tip was given by Spencer Mink, don t run with scissors. Our fun Get-A-Way trip has been postponed due to scheduling conflict. There will be more information coming soon on the Get-A-Way trip. Next meeting will be at 4:00 pm, Sunday, April 8 th, Several activities going on at the next meeting; Dad s will be putting up the new sign provided for the church; Clover Kids meeting will be held while the kids old enough, pick up trash on Highway 107.
