1 4-H Youth Development / College of Public Health and Human Sciences OREGON 4-H SHOOTING SPORTS Spring 2018, Volume 1, Issue 2 In this issue: Participation in the Mid-Willamette Valley Points for Profit Program Pays Off The Oregon 4-H Shooting Sports Program received $900 at the Annual Points for Profit Awards Program held on March 1, 2018 in Albany. Dr. David White, State Coordinator, as well as Resource Coordinators Melinda Butler and Teri Fladstol attended the Awards Night and Silent Auction Hawaiian Luau Party at the Linn County Expo Center to accept the award on behalf of the Oregon 4-H Shooting Sports Program. These funds will be used to help support the Annual Mail-In Tournament and State Contest, including awards, ribbons, targets and other supplies that make these events possible. The Oregon 4-H State Shooting Sports Program relies on donations and fundraising efforts such as these to be able to provide the highquality programming offered to youth around the state. 2 Points for Profit: Mid- Willamette Valley Every Dollar Helps How to Support OR State 4-H Shooting Sports just by shopping in Points for Profit encourages non-profit supporters (you) to shop with local Points for Profits businesses. In return, the Business Members provide additional revenue for the participating Non-Profits. Shopping Opps at State Contest Support these nearby businesses while you are at State Contest in June and anytime you are in the area throughout the year. Bi-Mart Stores & Pharmacy [receive five million points for each Bi-Mart Pharmacy receipt from any Bi-Mart store in Oregon]. Pizza Hut Staples Wilco Farm Stores Points are posted monthly and receipts are required to be submitted with the monthly summary. Points for profit is networking on purpose with a purpose harnessing millions of dollars in sales and giving back tens of thousands of dollars to participating non-profit organizations in our community! In Points for Profit, local businesses do more business, local non-profit organizations do more good while building partnerships and sustaining individual communities! It s easy to get involved! Just start shopping at any one of our business partners listed and start saving receipts. When you shop any of the local (mid- Willamette Valley) businesses and turn in your receipts, you will be contributing points toward an annual donation given to Oregon State 4-H Shooting Sports to help run the Mail-In Tournament and State Contest and participate in Nationals. For the State Contest, we received the following support from Points for Profit business sponsors: 600 water bottles from Michelle Morford, Country Financial; Meals for State Management & Superintendents ($1,200); Big Bites Food Truck on-site during the Contest with a donation made to Shooting Sports. 2

3 2018 State Contest Guide & Volunteer Sign-Up Online Help Us Ensure Excellence Volunteer at State Contest! Each venue at the State Contest is run by excellent volunteer Superintendents selected by contest management. The great job they do is largely because of the equally excellent efforts put forth by parent and leader volunteers willing to help with scoring, set-up, take-down, target changes and many other critical tasks. To get the most out of your participation in this event, read the 2018 State Contest Guide, available on the State 4-H Website under the Shooting Sports project area, State Contest. Link to Site Participants (qualified through the Mail In Tournament) and their parents are responsible for knowing the rules and requirements listed in this Guide. 4 State Contest Schedule June 18-20, 2018 REMEMBER: State Contest Participants must qualify through the Mail In Tournament for their discipline(s). This includes being registered and paid through the online registration system. Schedule subject to change. Age division/discipline dates will not change. Locations may be adjusted. Check onsite schedule for updates. MONDAY, JUNE 18 INTERMEDIATES: Archery, Air Pistol, Air Rifle, Muzzleloaders, Hunting Skills SENIORS: Shotgun, Air Pistol, Air Rifle, Muzzleloaders, Hunting Skills TUESDAY, JUNE 19 INTERMEDIATES: Shotgun, Smallbore Pistol, Smallbore Rifle, Hunting Skills SENIORS: Archery, Smallbore Pistol, Smallbore Rifle, Hunting Skills WEDNESDAY, JUNE 20 JUNIORS: All Disciplines (Archery, Shotgun, Air/Smallbore Rifle, Air/Smallbore Pistol, Hunting Skills) DAILY SCHEDULE The basic schedule will be the same each day, with each discipline managing the shooting order and timing individually. All course of fire locations will be announced closer to the event dates. Intermediate/Senior Hunting Skills awards will be handed out on Tuesday. Important State Policy Update Regarding Enrollment Policies There has been a change to the State Policy for participation in County and State Fairs as of June 1, State 4-H policy states: All youth members and leaders participating at County and State Fairs must be enrolled 90 days prior to the event they are participating in. For those participating in State and National Contests, that means you must be enrolled in 4-H by the first of March If you are currently participating in the Mail-In Tournament you MUST be enrolled in 4-H in the County and Club you are registered before you can shoot in the mail-in tournament contest. 4

5 Want to Start a Club? Requirements & Upcoming Trainings As part of the National 4-H Shooting Sports Program, Oregon requires that its Shooting Sports leaders be specifically trained in the individual discipline(s) they wish to lead. If you would like to work with youth in any of our Shooting Sports project areas archery, hunting skills, muzzle loading, pistol, rifle, shotgun or western heritage you must be a registered leader with your County for the H year. All leaders working with the youth on the shooting line (at least one per club) must be certified shooting sports leaders who have the required Oregon training (see list at right for upcoming dates). If you are not currently a leader, but would like more information, please contact your local OSU Extension Office. Shooting Sports Leader Trainings April in Central Oregon: Archery, Coordinator (TBD), Hunting Skills, Muzzle loading, Pistol, Rifle, and Shotgun will be offered. April in Central Oregon: Western Heritage/Western Action Shooting. State Training Team Seeks New Members The Oregon 4-H Shooting Sports Program relies on a team of instructors who help train club leaders in the various disciplines as well as help with the overall development of the program. Instructors must first complete the national training and then serve a three-year term in their discipline(s). Terms of service can be extended. These State Training Team Members provide leadership for 1-3 Shooting Sports trainings per year, participate on the Development Committee, attend team meetings, as well as communicate via on topics of joint concern to the team and the Oregon 4-H Shooting Sports program. Many of these team members also serve as superintendents at the State Contest. All interested adults are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to southern Oregon, where a shotgun and pistol instructor is needed, and eastern Oregon, where instructors are needed in archery, hunting skills, muzzleloading, pistol, rifle, and shotgun. This year s National 4-H Shooting Sports Training is scheduled for May 6 through 10 in Madrid, Iowa, therefore applications to be part of the Oregon Training Team must be received by April 1.
