Happy New Year! October 1 st marks the beginning of the H year. I m looking forward to the New Year, and working with all of our families to accomplish their objectives for this 4-H year. Have your 4-H ers set their goals yet? It is much easier to set project goals at the beginning of the year than any other time, AND it helps you start on your new record books! After October 1, don t forget to go on 4-H online and reenroll. This is how you get project information and communication from our office! A new initiative for this year is a leadership group for youth in 8 th grade and above. The group met for the first time in September and named themselves S.T.A.L.K, Students Taking Action, Leadership Kommittee. The first topic the youth learned about was brainstorming and group decision making. We had a speaker, Nancy Daniels from K-State come and lead a workshop on this topic. Using their new skill the youth named the group, and came up with the future topics they would like to learn about. They started talking about a countywide leadership project but ran out of time from all of the good discussion. The next S.T.A.L.K meeting will be November 10 th from 6:30pm-8:00pm. Please candism@ksu.edu to RSVP. This is a youth workshop so it is OK if parents drop youth off and come back to pick them up. The November topic will be Public Presentation Skills. I m looking forward to another great year of Shawnee County 4-H! ~Candis DO NOT FORGET TO CASH YOUR PREMIUM CHECKS! Club leaders have the Fair Ribbon checks for each member, please make sure to attend your club meetings to receive the check. After you have picked up your check, do not forget to cash or deposit the check! 1

So while other's might be saying Happy Halloween, we will be saying Happy New Year! We want to do our best to promote Shawnee County 4-H during October. One of the events we will be having this year is a project fair at the Topeka Shawnee County Public Library on Oct. 15th from I know there are a couple of other things going on that day, but we had to work around the library's schedule. All you need to do to participate is fill out the sign up genius with what project you would like to display and sit or stand by your display so interested families can ask you questions on Oct. 15th. Link to sign up: go/20f0849aaa82faafc1-oct This is a great opportunity to promote your favorite 4-H project and tell the community that 4-H is for EVERY youth in Shawnee County. It also looks good in your record book. Youth can bring small animals inside the library and the library can give us a section of the parking lot for large animals. Volunteers Needed- TARC, Children s Services is always looking for dependable volunteers to share an evening of fun with. The SPARKK (Special Parents and Respite Kare for Kids) Program was developed by a group of dedicated family members with a need for respite care and the commitment for providing quality supports and services to children with disabilities or delays in Shawnee County. SPARKK is held two Friday evenings a month from 5:30 to 9:00p.m. at TARC s Administrative Building, 201 SW Randolph Ave. in Topeka. SPARKK is for children between six months and sixteen years of age that have an IEP or IFSP. Siblings ARE welcome! A minimal fee covers an evening filled with quality supports, stimulating activities, dinner and guaranteed fun. We would love for you to join us for a Friday evening SPARKK night. If you are interested in volunteering please contact Wendy Gatewood, Children s Services/Assistive Technology Family Support Coordinator, 785/ or wgatewood@tarcing.org. (Volunteers must be 13 yrs. of age and must be accompanied by an adult until the age of 16.) TARC is Shawnee County s most experienced provider of support for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. 2

3 4-H Achievement Night Finding 4-H Achievements Achievement Night is for all members to be recognized for their hard work for the H year. The program will be November 5th at Washburn Rural High School. Doors will open at 6pm and the program will start at 6:30pm. You will receive a formal invite in the mail if you were enrolled in 4-H online for the year. New members in Oct are invited to come as well and go on stage with their clubs! To encourage youth to submit record books and to attend the program, Events Council is sponsoring door prizes again this year. The prizes will be a Fitbit, a large Lego Set, a 4-H event scholarship and a bike! The door prize winners will be determined by a drawing at the conclusion of the program. You have three ways to get your name into the drawing. 1.) Attend Achievement Night, you will get one entry just for coming. (You must be present to win a prize) 2.) Submit a non-competitive record book. Not only will this get you a Gold Award at Achievement Night but it is good for one more entry into the prize drawing. (You can do several non-competitive record books but you will still only get one entry) 3.) Submit a competitive record book. These books are judged on the county level and will also get you into the prize drawing. (You can do several competitive record books but you will only get one entry into the drawing.) You can do all three of these things for a total of 3 chances at the door prizes. Each 4-H er will only be allowed to win one prize. I m looking forward to seeing all of you on Nov. 5th. There will be snacks and a social after the program. 4-H New Family Meeting- Are you new to 4-H or have only been involved for a short time? Are you a club leader who has new families that could use some background information about 4-H? On October 20th there will be a New 4-H Family Orientation at 7:00pm at the Shawnee County Extension office upstairs meeting room. The Extension office is located at 1740 SW Western Ave. in Topeka, there is an entrance to our meeting room on the west side of the building facing Western Ave. This meeting is open to all new families and we will have time to answer questions about 4-H. If a family is going to attend we would like to have them RSVP either by ing Candis at candism@ksu.edu or by calling Callie at ext.111. We will need RSVPs by Oct. 17 th, there must be enough interest to have the meeting. Feel free to share this information with all the new families and visitors to your club! There will be a presentation about 4-H and the goals and opportunities of the program. We will also explain our Shawnee County events that we have. 3

4 Events Council Elections-Oct. 13 th - Make sure that your club is represented at the Oct. 13 th Events Council meeting. This is the meeting where we elect new Events Council officers and choose committees for the new 4-H year. Here is the part about Officer Elections from our Events Council By-Laws: Officers The youth officers shall be: president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer and reporter. Qualifications Must be a current Shawnee County 4-H member at least 12 years of age on the date of election. (This is NOT 4-H Age) Must have been an active Council member by serving on at least one Council committee in a previous year OR Must have held a major office (president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, reporter) at the club level. Officer may be voting or non-voting member. (This means you do not have to be the elected Events Council officer for your club) Terms of office Officers are elected for a one year term. Term starts after elections are completed. Officers may hold the same office no more than two consecutive years. If the elected officer misses three full council meetings it will be determined that they cannot fulfill their term and the vacancy (according to Section 5) will be filled at the third missed meeting. Additional information: Youth self-nominate by writing their names on a sheet of paper before the meeting. Youth can self-nominate for as many offices as they would like. Each youth can say a 90 second statement before each office they are running for. (This will be timed) Events Council VOTING members will vote by secret ballot, those ballots will be counted and the winner will be announced before the next officer election begins. 4

8 Counties/Districts Needed for 2017 Kansas 4-H Japanese Exchange This summer inbound exchange program which Kansas has conducted with LABO and LEX in Japan since 1977 is seeking counties to participate in Based on your county/district responses, Kansas will commit to hosting a specific number of youth and adult chaperones for the 2017 summer inbound program. In 2016, Kansas hosted 28 Japanese youth and adults. Participating counties get to host a small group of young Japanese teens who are highly motivated to become a member of their Kansas host family and to learn English. Kansas 4-H families have reported many good experiences and say that the program has had a positive impact on their children. The Japanese will arrive in counties July 23, 2017, and stay with one family each for four weeks. Consider getting involved with your county/unit. Participating counties/units must locate a volunteer coordinator who then manages the recruitment and screening of five to six host families, and organizes local activities during the stay. Training, resource materials and some expense money are available for the coordinators and agents. Extension agents liaison with the Kansas 4-H Japanese Coordinator to conduct the program. If you think your county might be interested, or to find out more details about your county/district hosting Japanese youth from years-old in 2017, contact Rose Scott by September 14th: sixtykid2@gmail.com, or call Rose at or (cell).
