2 Cattle Grazing under Pivot LOCATION: The ranch headquarters, surrounded by the Pioneer, Highland, Ruby, and Blacktail Mountains, is located eight miles north of Dillon, Montana, in Beaverhead County. Interstate 15 is the west boundary of the property, and Highway 91 bisects the east end of the ranch. A 2011 Bale Stack DESCRIPTION: The ranch lays in an arid basin, producing tremendous yields of high quality hay beneath four center pivots and eight wheel lines. Cows are summered on the ranch and on deeded irrigated meadows of the Sparrow Grazing Association near the Big Hole River north of Wisdom. 2

4 Red Barn for Horses PRODUCTION: Annually, the ranch puts up 2-3,000 round bales weighing 1,500-1,600 lbs. each. About 100 head are summered at the headquarters. Usually 175 pair are summered at the all deeded Sparrow Grazing Association at Wisdom. At Wisdom, they run in common with two other ranchers. Additional pairs are summered with the family on their ranch near Philipsburg. All the cattle are wintered at the headquarters with usually all the heifer calves. Surplus hay is sold. The 8 rainfall at the headquarters enables the ranch to put up premium hay. Seldom are there more than 4-5 of snow on the ground. The ranch has less snow than even Dillon, 8 miles south. Calves are born in January and February, and weaned by October 15. In 2011, the steers averaged lbs., and the heifers averaged 725 lbs. The rancher maintains his cattle in excellent condition with the surplus of high quality feed. Winter feeding beneath the Pioneer Mountains 4

5 Blomquist Reservoir and Pioneer Mountains WATER: The ranch has a large storage dam, Blomquist Reservoir, on deeded land above the irrigation. This reservoir is filled from Willow Creek, and a very large spring on the ranch. This spring flows excellent quality water, consistently year long. Large trout are clearly visible in the outflow. The potential for an excellent fishery is untapped. Spring Flowing 150 miner inches The spring is located on the boundary between state land and the neighbor s 80 acres. The ranch has a 99 year lease on the 80 acres. The neighbor adjacent on the east side, shares in the spring. The north neighbor uses some water seasonally for stock water. 8 Headquarters & Ruby Mountains This picture illustrates the strength of this ranch. The upper elevations are deep in winter, but the ranch has no snow. The ranch winters hundreds of cows, and is only 8 miles from Dillon on a paved road. SERVICES: Dillon is home to University of Montana-Western, Beaverhead Livestock Auction, Barrett Hospital and Healthcare Facilities, and the normal ranch & recreation businesses. Dillon s county airport has a 6,500 ft landing strip, which is capable of jets like the Gulfstream. Beaverhead County has the highest number of cattle of any county in Montana. RECREATION: Clark Canyon Dam offers boating. Legendary trout fishing is everywhere; Beaverhead, Jefferson, Ruby, Blacktail, Red Rock, etc. The famous Big Hole River offers the only grayling fishing in the continental USA.
