1 2018 BEEF CALF SCRAMBLE RULES (Sponsored by the Champaign County Agricultural Society and Contributors) 1. The Champaign County Agricultural Society, FFA Departments, OSU Champaign County Extension Office, and the Committee in Charge will not be responsible for any accidents connected with this contest. 2. Qualifications for contestants are: a. Must be males entering the 10th, 11th or 12th grade in school in the fall of b. Be interested in cattle feeding. c. Must be able to feed and care for calf for one year. d. Be reliable and trustworthy. e. Now carrying a 4-H or FFA project. f. Must submit a handwritten 200 word essay on "Why I Would Like to Participate in the Calf Scramble" with the application. (Essay must be handwritten AND LEGIBLE.) You are to include: why you want to participate, what you expect to learn, feeding and care, where you will keep the calf, etc. g. Previous calf winners ARE NOT eligible. h. Must have a 4-H Advisor or FFA Instructor s signature on your application. I. Applicants may or may not be asked for an interview by the Committee in Charge or contacted for additional information. 3. Boys and calves will be placed on the grandstand track as directed by the grandstand announcer. 4. Boys will wear football helmets and sweatshirts during the contest. No football shoes can be worn. The Committee suggests heavy boots. The helmets and scramble t-shirts will be supplied by the Committee. Boys must wear their own sweatshirt under the furnished scramble t-shirt. 5. Boys will take into the grandstand track, a rope halter. Halter cannot be used as a lariat. Halter must be placed on head of animal in the correct way. Rope halter will be supplied. 6. At no time will the boys be permitted to tie the rope to his body or belt. 7. If a boy has hold of a calf, no other boy will be allowed to touch the calf until it breaks away. 8. If a boy catches the calf by the tail, he shall be given a reasonable amount of time (approximately 30 seconds) to work around to its head; otherwise the referee will order him to let go of the calf. 9. If two or more boys catch the same calf at the same time, the calf will be turned loose. 10. To be successful, a contestant must get a calf into the circle with the halter on in an approved manner. If the halter is not on properly when the contestant gets into the circle, the calf will be released to continue the contest. The contestant is responsible for knowing the proper way to put on the halter.

2 11. Undue roughness will not be tolerated by the referee. Poor sportsmanship automatically disqualifies any contestant. 12. Beef Calf Scramble will be refereed by a group of not less than five referees selected by the Committee in Charge. 13. Boys will not be permitted to hold a calf down or lead a calf by putting fingers in nose, or applying pressure as a bull ring. 14. After all minor's releases and applications have been checked (application must be properly signed by contestant, parents, and a 4-H advisor or FFA instructor), the Beef Calf Scramble Committee will notify each boy of his acceptance as a participant and where and when to meet on the date he is to participate in the Beef Calf Scramble. 15. The calves obtained in the 2018 Scramble must be shown and judged in a special class at the 2019 Champaign County Fair, made up of scramble calves only, and can also be shown in the regular Jr. Fair Beef show, 4-H or FFA. PROJECTS NOT WEIGHED-IN IN DECEMBER WITH OTHER BEEF PROJECTS WILL BE INELIGIBLE TO BE SHOWN IN 2019 AND WILL BE BILLED THE COST OF THE SCRAMBLE CALF. 16. Scramble calf MUST be shown at the Spring Clinic date determined later. (Projects NOT shown will be billed the cost of the Scramble Calf pending review by the Scramble Committee.) 17. The calf caught must be carried as a regular project in 4-H or FFA and shown by him in the 2019 Champaign County Fair. He must indicate on this entry form whether the calf will be carried in 4-H or FFA and have the signature of the advisor. If after review by the Scramble Committee it is determined that the scramble calf cannot be shown, it will be the responsibility of the Committee to make a final decision about the calf. 18. When you pick up the scramble calf, you must indicate which 4-H club or FFA Chapter you will carry the scramble calf in as a project. 19. The scramble winner is required to take proper care of the calf at all times throughout the project. This includes during the 2019 County Fair. The stall is to be cleaned daily and the calf cared for, presenting a good display to the public and scramble donors. 20. The Scramble Committee wants your scramble calf experience to be successful. Please feel free to ask your 4-H advisor, FFA Instructor, or the Extension Office staff, if you need help. 21. This application, along with the essay and completed forms attached, must be returned to the Champaign County Fair Secretary (Meredith Bodey,see back page) by MONDAY, JULY 16, KEEP THESE RULES FOR YOUR REFERENCE!!!

I will properly care for the calf, keep accurate records of feed and other expenses, and exhibit the calf at the 2019 Champaign County Fair. The Committee in Charge reserves the right to disqualify any scramble winner from participating in the special class judging, if in the Committee's viewpoint, the calf has not been properly cared for, fed and handled. The calf must be sold at auction at the 2019 Champaign County Fair.
