1 Rugby Rules and Scoring General: There are 3 types of Rugby o All three have different rules but they use the same field and the same ball. Rugby Union Rugby League Rugby 7 s Everything listed below is about rugby union Each team has 15 players per side o 8 forwards = bigger, stronger players o 7 backs- fast, quick players Passing: A rugby game consist of only backwards or lateral passes. o A forward pass is a foul and the other team is rewarded a scrum Hold the ball with two hands and pass across your body. Catch the ball away from your body. Kicking: The game starts with a drop kick. o After a score, a drop kick restarts the game. In class we practiced: o Grubber Kick. A grubber kick is a low bouncing kick used to advance the ball forward. It is used when the defense is out of position and the offense sees an opportunity to advance the ball. o Up and Under Kick. It is called an up and under because you kick the ball up and run under the defender. This is used in games when an offense is under pressure from the defense
2 Rugby Rules and Scoring Scoring: A score in rugby is called a Try. o A try is worth 5 points. o A player must touch the ball to the ground in the end zone for it to be a successful score. After a try, an extra point is kicked. o Extra point is taken in line from where the try was scored. Terms for Rugby: Knock on a ball that is dropped forward, or intentional knocked forward. Free kick rewarded after a penalty. o Three options Kick for points (3) Kick out of bounds and get a lineout where the ball goes out of bounds Tap and go. Tap and go is a quick play used to restart after a penalty. The ball must leave the players hands and make contact with their foot in order for it to be legal Ruck is the equivalent to offensive line man banging into each other in football. When a player is tackled they have to release the ball. When they release the ball the defense is allowed to take the ball. It is the offensive player s job to ruck over the ball and create an off- sides line. Ruck is the term used to describe clearing out, it is what happens every time a player is tackled Scrum = a set piece that restarts the game after a foul. The 8 forwards from each team line up in an identical pattern. On the referee s call they interlock and push into each other. Lineout = a set piece that restarts the game after the ball goes out of bounds. A predetermined number of players from each team form a tunnel. The hooker throws the ball in overhand. Teams are allowed to pick up players to get them above the other team.

4 RULES FOR ULTIMATE RUGBY: 1. Initiate Play: Each point begins with both teams lining up on the front of their respective end zone line. The defense kicks the ball (pop, or grubber) to start the game. 2. Scoring: Each time the offense completes a pass in the defense's end zone, the offense scores a point. Play is initiated after each score. 3. Movement of the Ball: The ball may be advanced in any direction by completing a rugby pass to a teammate. Players may not run with the ball. The person with the ball ("passer") has ten seconds to throw the disc. The defender guarding the passer ("marker") counts out the stall count. 4. Change of Possession: When a pass is not completed (e.g. out of bounds, drop, block, interception, stalled), the defense immediately takes possession of the disc and becomes the offense. 5. Substitutions: Players not in the game may replace players in the game after a score and during an injury timeout. 6. Non- contact: No physical contact is allowed between players. Picks and screens are also prohibited. A foul occurs when contact is made. 7. Fouls: When a player initiates contact on another player a foul occurs. When a foul disrupts possession, the play resumes as if the possession was retained. If the player committing the foul disagrees with the foul call, the play is redone. 8. Self- Officiating: Players are responsible for their own foul and line calls. Players resolve their own disputes. 9. Spirit of the Game: Ultimate stresses sportsmanship and fair play. Competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of respect between players, adherence to the rules, and the basic joy of play.
5 RULES FOR FLAG RUGBY 1. No contact. 2. Players can only pass lateral or backwards. 3. The tagger holds the flag up and yells tag. The tagger must return the flag to the person by handing it to them. 4. The tagger can only return to play, after returning the flag. Ball carrier can only return to play after they reattach their flag. 5. If the flag is pulled the player has three steps to pass the ball or they have to stop and have 2 seconds to pass. 6. A knock- on (a ball that is lost forward) is a turnover. 7. A bad pass that hits the ground is a turnover. 8. A forward pass is a turnover. 9. There is an unlimited amount of tags. 10. Off- sides happen when the defense does not retreat behind the where the flag is pulled and they play the ball. 11. Play restarts off of a foul with the ball being tapped off the knee. 12. Players will use good communication skills to settle their own disagreement.
