FOREWORD It gives me great pleasure to introduce the Coiste Oiliuna Chorcai Primary Schools GAA Coaching Booklet. There has been a large increase in the number of clubs providing direct support to their local primary schools in recent years. It is important for both coaches and the schools which they support to have a clear plan for the delivery of coaching sessions to ensure the children involved derive maximum physical benefits from the activities undertaken. This booklet contains coaching sessions for first and second class, third and fourth class and also fifth and sixth class pupils. It is aimed at club school link coaches and primary school teachers. The sessions are designed on the following principals 18 sessions that require minimal yard space in both hurling and football The sessions flow in to each other but can be varied according to the ability levels of the class and the best judgement of the coach/teacher. Skills selected are based on recognised age appropriate activities An emphasis throughout on the development of agility, balance and coordination as well as the key ingredient FUN. PE curriculum games, athletics and gymnastics strands are included in sessions. As per best practice, an assumption that there is a ball per two players in football to ensure maximum participation for all pupils in the class groups. Sessions can be taken out of the booklet directly in to the school yard if desired. Further backup resources are in the GAA Fun Do Resource pack Whether you are an experienced coach or a new club school link coach, you now have a template to work from and some frameworks for the content of sessions. This resource will be backed up on the ground through the Games Development Administrators that are based around the county as well as our coach education programme which is available to all who wish to improve on their knowledge of coaching GAA in Cork. I would like to wish you all the very best in delivering coaching sessions and hope this manual can be of assistance to you in bringing gaelic games to children throughout the county. SKILL: NEAR HAND TACKLE A DOWN THE CHANNEL: divide the group into pairs and mark out a channel 5 metres wide. Get player A to solo/bounce the ball through the channel and get player B to attempt a near hand tackle. Players B should aim to dispossess player A before they get to the end of the channel. Swap roles and speed up the drill as the players improve. B 1V1 POSSESSION: Divide the group into pairs with a ball between 2. Player A moves around the grid while player B attempts a near hand tackle. Swap roles and speed up the drill as the players improve. 35 LEVEL 3:
3 C TEAM TACKLE: Divide the group into 2 teams (6v6) and set up a grid (20m x 20m). Team A have 4 footballs. Team A retain possession in the grid while Team B attempt to dispossess the players in Team A by practicing the near hand tackle. When a player in Team A loses possession from a near hand tackle then that ball is out of the game. Time how long it takes Team B to dispossess all the footballs. Swap roles and repeat. D GRID TACKLE: Divide the group into 2 teams (6v6). Set up a grid (20mx20m) and lay out markers randomly around the grid. Team A score by soloing a ball over 1 of the markers while Team B score by getting in a successful near hand tackle or by touching the ball with their hand. Players have to pass the ball to a teammate after 2 plays. Swap roles after 3-4 minutes. GAME Play a modified game of 7/8 a side. Players have to take either 1 hop/solo in possession before passing the ball off. 3 points are awarded for a succeddful near hand tackle in the game with only 1 point for a goal/point. TEACHING POINTS NEAR HAND TACKLE - Move alongside or level with the opponent, keeping eyes on the ball - When an opponents far leg is forward step across their space with the near leg - Flick the ball away with the near hand when the ball is free in the solo or bounce - Recover the ball to win possession 36 LEVEL 3:
3 SESSION 5 INSTANT ACTIVITY: MULTI DIRECTIONAL MOVEMENT: Players move around a grid slowly jogging, shuffling, skipping, moving forwards, backwards, laterally, twisting, skipping, jumping while avoiding contact. Every 30 seconds they perform an exercise. 9Squat, Split Squat, Forward Jump, Lateral Jump, Hopping, Crawling). Repeat this process 2-3 times making the grid smaller and increasing the pace the players move at. You can include falling and rolling if the session is played on a pitch. REVISION: NEAR HAND TACKLE 1V1 POSSESSION: Divide the group into pairs with a ball between 2. Player A moves around the grid while player B attempts a near hand tackle. Swap roles and speed up the drill as the players improve. SKILL: FEINT AND SIDE STEP A AROUND THE MAN: Divide the players into groups of 4. The 4 players form a line 3-4 meters apart. Player A feints and sidesteps each player at a walking pace. When player A gets to the end of the line, all the players move up a space, the ball is passed up to Player B and the drill continues. Increase the pace as the players technique improves. B IN & OUT: Divide the players into groups of 4. Place 3 cones 2-3 meters apart. The players practice feinting and side stepping past each cone. Players wait at the end of the line and the drill is repeated back to the starting point. 37 LEVEL 3:
3 C 4 players line up with 2 players at A, one player at B and one player in the middle. The 1st player at A while in possession of a football, does a side step past the middle player and hand passes to the player at B and the drill continues. Make sure to rotate the player in the middle. The middle player can move at different paces, making it more realistic and harder for the player side stepping. D 7 players line up with 4 players at cone A in pairs, 2 players at cone B and one player in the middle. The 1st pair at A while in possession of a football attempt to get past the middle player by side stepping or hand passing to a teammate in support. The ball is hand passed to the pair at B and the drill continues. Make sure to rotate the player in the middle. The middle player can move at different paces, making it more realistic and harder for the pair in possession. GAME Play a modified game of 7/8 a side 3 points are awarded for every side step in the game All other skills are permitted TEACHING POINTS FEINT SIDE STEP - Run directly towards the opponent. - When about a metre away from the opponent feign movement to one side by shifting weight in that direction. Accentuate the feint by dropping the shoulder at that side simultaneously - Show the ball to the same side. - Then, push hard off the planted foot to spring to the other side pulling the ball back quickly at the same time. - Plant the opposite foot and continue forward in the new direction. - Note that the player should only use 4 steps in which to perform the technique 38 LEVEL 3:
3 SESSION 6 INSTANT ACTIVITY: TOE TAP TAG: Mark out a grid 20m x 20m. 1 player solo s around the gris attempting to tag another player. The player who is tagged then becomes the player that is on. Make the grid smaller to make the game harder for the players being chased. Skipping: get players to skip for both height and distance. Emphasise a soft landing and opposite hand/arm action. REVISION: FEINT AND SIDE STEP 4 players line up with 2 players at A, one player at B and one player in the middle. The 1st player at A while in possession of a football, does a side step past the middle player and hand passes to the player at B and the drill continues. Make sure to rotate the player in the middle. The middle player can move at different paces, making it more realistic and harder for the player side stepping. SKILL: Refer to You Can Awards. GAME: BLITZ 39 LEVEL 3:
