Coaching Things I ve Learned Your enthusiasm is contagious. Smile and laugh easily. Your facial expression and tone of voice communicate more than your words. Offer lots of positive encouragement. Learn the names of your athletes in the first practice. Warm-up with your team. This is an excellent time to build rapport with your athletes. As importantly, it will keep them from warming up too hard. Pay close attention to your team. They will help you help them get the most out of the season. If something s not working, change it! Kids want to improve. Be sure to help them. Teams with coaches that participate with them get more out of practice. We re just a boat on the ocean, we roll with the tide. General Responsibilities, Notes Create a positive environment for your team. Find a replacement for meets and practices that you cannot attend. Send out an introductory to your team within 48 hours of receiving your roster. Communicate regularly with your parents. Be mindful and respectful of the practice timeslots i.e. Please Stay on Schedule. Have your team ready for each event throughout the meet. Ensure that we have volunteers available and on-time for our meets. Encourage your athletes, and their parents foremost, to stay for the entire meet. Obtain emergency contact information for each athlete i.e. primary cell number(s). Encourage participation in the Mileage Club. Uniforms and coaches shirts will be provided during the skills clinic. Please send me questions on any subject, technique, etc. I ll do my best to find a good answer. Things to Observe and to Provide Input Everything that matters to you, your athletes, and their parents. What works? What doesn t? What should we be doing? 2017 PLAY Track and Field 3
Season Schedule Please refer to the PLAY website ( under Track/Schedules as the single source for practice and meet schedules. This is the best place to look and look often for any updates. Please understand that PLAY Track is last on the priority list for the PLHS Track and Field athletic complex. High school sports and middle school track take precedent ahead of PLAY. Additionally, weather plays a significant role in the schedule for all of these sports. When school sporting events are postponed, it is common for our schedule to in turn be impacted. Thus, the PLAY Track Board Theme: We re just a boat on the ocean, we roll with the tide. Weather Given the resiliency of the track surface and field event areas, we usually have the flexibility to wait until the last minute to call off a track event. Because of this, the standard weather communication tools PLAY website, the weather hotline, and the rained out text system DO NOT support our sport as well as others. So, please be sure that the coaches coordinator has your preferred cell number and address. The coaches coordinator will send a text and an ONLY IF practice will be cancelled. The coordinator will send this communication as early in the day as possible but like you, often times work gets in the way of PLAY if you ll pardon the pun PLAY Track and Field 4
Parent Volunteers Schedule It is the coach s responsibility to communicate the need for and to secure the support of parent volunteers. The coaches will be provided the schedule for each season and is responsible for letting the parents know about the need for volunteers. The volunteers should report to the finish line on the track by 8:30am. Grade K-3 Volunteer Positions Finish Line Ribbon Distribution 1-8. Standing Long Jump. Running Long Jump. Baseball Throw. Coaches Meeting Refer to PLAY Track Website for details. 5:00-5:30pm Pick up packet. 5:30pm Clinic begins. 7:00pm Clinic ends. Conducted by the PLAY Track Board & PLHS Track Coaching Staff and Athletes PLAY Track and Field 5
Pictures Please do NOT pay attention to the times listed on the photo envelopes, we will adjust the schedule as necessary the day of pictures. 12 Meets
General Notes and Guidelines Grades 2-3 athletes should arrive at 8:15a for warm-up. Begin 8:30a. Grades K-1 athletes should arrive at 8:15a for warm-up. Begin 8:30a. A communication will be sent to all participates in track identifying the need for parent volunteers to help administer each meet. Each meet will specify certain teams parents. Your job as coach is to reinforce the volunteering message and to obtain your parents commitment to help. Ribbons o Coaches will be given ribbons in their coaches packet at the beginning of the season. If more ribbons are required, please see a board member. o Field events: top three performances per team are awarded ribbons. Coaches distribute these ribbons. o Track events: places 1-8 per heat are awarded ribbons. Parent volunteers distribute these ribbons. Field Event Notes o Progress at your pace. Please stay on task. o Measurements To the nearest inch. Use standard rounding rules e.g. ¼ must be rounded down to the preceding inch. Coaches should demonstrate proper measuring technique to parent volunteers. Track Event Notes o Order see diagram on following page. o The meet announcer will guide everyone through the schedule. o Please have your runners ready to go. A coach from each team should assist the starter by organizing their athletes into the respective heats. o Work with the other coaches to create heats of similar capabilities i.e. faster runners run against other faster runners. Shuttles. o The number of runners is determined by the team with the largest number of athletes. o If the number of runners is an odd number, runner #1 begins opposite finish line. o If the number of runners is an even number, runner #1 begins at the finish line. o After finishing their leg, runners are asked to sit down. Concessions will be available. Encourage athletes to bring additional layers of clothing as appropriate. Encourage athletes to write their name somewhere on their clothing and water bottles PLAY Track and Field 13

Field Event Rules Baseball Throw 1 st through 3 rd place ribbons will be awarded by the coach within each team regardless of gender. Allow each athlete warm-up throws. Each athlete is allowed three throws for scoring. The best throw counts. Each athlete takes their throws consecutively. Mark the first two throws with flags and measure only the longest of three throws. Measurement o Tape should be extended from the middle of the athlete s standing point to the nearest edge of the ground imprint caused by the shot. o Tape is to be placed at edge of concrete curb and beginning of the landing area. o Measure to the nearest inch using standard math rounding guidelines. Landing Area Cement Edge of Throwing Area 2017 PLAY Track and Field 15 15
Running Long Jump 1 st through 3 rd place ribbons will be awarded by the coach within each team regardless of gender. Athletes will jump before the concrete border of the sand pit. If the jumper s take-off foot touches the concrete, 6 should be deducted from the total distance. Each jumper is permitted one warm-up jump. Each jumper is allowed three jumps for scoring. The longest jump counts. Encourage jumpers to fall forward and to exit the pit forward of their landing area. Measurement: o Tape should be extended from the edge of the cement, nearest the landing area, straight back from the nearest point of imprint made by the jumper. o Nearest point of imprint is typically the jumper s heel although if an athlete falls backwards it would then be their hand or other indentation created by their body. o Measure to the nearest inch using standard math rounding guidelines. 22 Warm-up Routine Several Key Benefits: o Warms the body in preparation for the practice. o Enables a more productive workout. o Provides some time for team building. o Reduce risk of injury. Use this time to get to know your athletes; for your athletes to know each other. First, do some easy running, motion exercises. Take a lap around the track; or around the football field on the infield. Remind your runners this is a warm up, not a race. Runner s drills meters easy pace. o A-Skips is first exercise. Butt Kicks is second exercise. Third and fourth don t know name, look good to use. High Kicks is fifth exercise. Sixth and Seventh exercises variation of hurdlers exercises demonstrated to us during the skills clinic. o Runner s Karaoke (if you watch this, the traditional form is perfect for us. Do some light stretching, static exercises second. o Good time to communicate the evening s practice schedule to the team. o The idea of stretching is to loosen, not pull. Remind athletes to ease into each exercise and to stop before it hurts. Hold each stretch for seconds. o Standing Position 1. Head, hip and arm circles. 2. Legs together, bend at waist, touch ground keeping legs straight. 3. Right leg over left, bend at waist, touch ground keeping legs straight. 4. Left leg over right, bend at waist, touch ground keeping legs straight. 5. Achilles / Calves stand against a fence, one leg forward, the other back, bent front leg at the knee while keeping the back leg straight with foot on the ground. Lead forward and/or down into fence to create stretch in calve. Stretch both legs. o Sitting Position 1. Butterfly feet together, lean head toward feet groin stretch. 2. Hurdler one leg forward, other back, 90 angle, and lean forward, and then back. Stretch both legs. o Prone Position grab bent leg below knee, then pull toward chest with back on the ground. Stretch both legs. Feel free to vary this routine or choose exercises of your own PLAY Track and Field 22 22
Running Long Jump Determine Take-off Leg o Use for high jump and hurdles also. o Have athlete take 3-5 step approach to kicking soccer ball. o The plant leg is the take-off. o The kicking leg is the quick leg. Key Technique o 6-8 Step Approach. The kids will want to take a longer approach discourage this. The longer approach will simply make them too tired to jump their best. First step forward is with the quick leg. Maximum controllable speed. About 90% of full speed. Controllable is the key word, not maximum! Solid tall posture during approach. No waist bend. Quiet head, very little movement. o Take-off Bend knee of take-off leg slightly Push off aggressively. o Lift knee of quick leg aggressively for height. o Fall forward in pit. Jumpers are to take-off prior to reaching the concrete border of the landing area at the end of the approach. The jumping board is not used by our athletes. Observations, Ideas o Most kids love this event run, take-off, sand splash, what could be better? o Variation have athletes shorten their approach to 4-6 steps. They ll be surprised to see how little difference in their jump s distance when compared to the longer approach. This will help reinforce the idea that a long approach is unnecessary. This will help reinforce the importance of acceleration, pushing off hard with the takeoff foot, and aggressively lifting the quick leg. o Variation standing long jump. Execute jump with little to no knee bend. Instruct athletes to jump with aggressive knee bend. There should be big difference in distance. This reinforces ideas of slight knee bend and aggressive push off. o At its finest execution, the long jump is a highly technical event. The intent of this brief description is to enable you to feel comfortable in your role as a coach and to enable success for the athlete. o You may want to bring some athletic tape so the jumpers can mark the start of their approach PLAY Track and Field 23 23
Baseball Throw Grip o Ball should rest in the fingers; minimize contact should be made with the palm. o Middle three fingers are positioned behind the ball while the thumb and pinky support the outside of the ball. Stance (assuming throw from a standing position) o Feet shoulder width apart. o Body quarter turn away from the target. o Feet should be straight ahead or slightly toward the target. Windup o Non-throwing arm extends forward toward target. o Throwing arm extended back as far as possible. o Palm of throwing hand should face upward on last part of windup. Lower and Upper Body Motion o Weight transfers from back leg to front leg. o Hips open toward the target prior to the throwing arm passing 45. o Throwing arm stays high above the shoulder. Follow-through o Throwing arm extends fully across the body while the athlete bends at the waist. Adding a Run-up o To increase distance, many athletes will add a one or two step approach to their throw. o Essentially, all of the skills described are the same, they happen more quickly. o The additional motion created by the run-up adds complexity to the throw. All of the above happen more quickly. o A common consequence is that the hips do not open up fully which limits the distance of the throw. o The other common consequence of the run-up is the extended follow-through caused by the forward momentum. Be sure the athletes give themselves additional space in the throwing area so they do not scratch. o The only point in stating this is to offer the following suggestion in the event an athlete is struggling with their throws. In this case, have the athlete throw from a standing position to review the fundamentals. Observations, Ideas o Kids will frequently short-arm their throws. Remind them to extend their throwing arm back as far as possible. o Focus on proper throwing mechanics prior to having the athletes add a run-up PLAY Track and Field 24 24
Running - Technique We will not have starting blocks, so focus on a standing crouch start. Standing Start Crouch Position. o Starter says Runners, on your mark. Initial position relaxed. Strong leg forward. Entire foot on the track. Arm on this side of body should be looking at their watch. Quick leg about feet behind. Only toes of foot on the track. Arm on this side of body should be in their pocket. o Starter says Set. In same position as described above, runner crouches to enable legs to be at a 45 angle each. o Starter says Go! Strong leg used to push off and to enable rest of powerful body movement. Arm on strong leg side thrust back. Quick leg thrust forward aggressively think high kick. Arm on side of quick leg thrust forward. First 2-3 steps should be with runner lean i.e. body is in tall posture form, but a 45 lean. o Running Tall. No bend in waist. Quiet head i.e. no movement. Eyes on the finish line. High, powerful knees. Arms pumping at 90 angle; Smile to Pocket. Landing and pushing off on balls of the feet. The longer the race, the less amount of time that the runner will actually run on the balls of their feet as opposed to their normal gaits landing position. Relaxed body. o Breathe. o Take time to teach athletes these elements of sprinting. o They will tire in their races. Tell them that this will happen. Push them in practice to get tired while sprinting so they can learn how this feels. o When they reach this point, a good thing to think about is form. A good phrase for you to encourage them with is keep your form. o The hope is that this will remind them to return to form which will help them finish the race as fast as possible. Observations, Ideas. o I believe that a standing crouch position is a good starting position for our purposes. If you want to teach a position with hands on the track (without the blocks), I ll leave that up to you. o The best way to get faster is to run sprints. o Focusing on good form will produce the greatest improvement and overall results PLAY Track and Field 25 25
Running - Drills Work on technique. Run warm up exercises with a little more speed. Strides o Start slowly, gradually building up speed. o About 30% into distance, runner should be at full speed. o Maintain full speed for 85% of distance. o Coast to a stop the last 15% of distance. o Vary the distance. To improve at a particular distance, repetitions at shorter and longer distances are appropriate and helpful. Feel free to run relays and shuttles as applicable PLAY Track and Field 26 26
Appendix - Diagrams. Long Jump Measurement Measuring the Jump s distance. Tape should be extended from the edge of the cement, nearest the landing area, straight back from the nearest point of imprint made by the jumper. Nearest point of imprint is typically the jumper s heel although if an athlete falls backwards it would then be their hand or other indentation.
