2 164 MEASUREMENT (Chpter 8) Opening prolem Byron is out to ply gme of soccer on pitch like the one longside. You proly hve pitch like this t your school. Things to think out: How long do you think soccer pitch is? How wide do you think soccer pitch is? c How could you clculte the totl distnce round the oundry of the pitch? d How could you clculte the re covered y the pitch? In our everydy life we mesure mny things. Mesurement gives us numer vlue for the size of quntity. There re severl common types of quntities we mesure: Mesurement Distnce or length Mss or weight Time Temperture Are Volume Speed Exmple How fr we hve trvelled. How hevy we re. How long tennis mtch will lst. How hot it is going to e tomorrow. The size of the lock of lnd I wnt to uy. How much concrete I need for the drivewy. How fst I need to trvel to get home in 2 hours. The different types of quntities require different instruments to mesure them. Activity 1 Mesures nd mesuring instruments Wht to do: Wht do these instruments mesure? Mtch the instrument to its nme. c

The erliest units of length were relted to prts of the ody. We still tlk out the spn of your hnd. A cuit ws the length from your elow to the tip of your fingers. A yrd ws the distnce from your nose to your fingertip. A pce ws the length of your stride. There were 1000 pces in Romn mile. However, ll of these mesurements were inccurte ecuse people re different sizes. How fr is it to the shop? 1000 pces. spn cuit Tht mens 2000 for me... In order tht people could mke mesurements tht were stndrd, the British Imperil system ws developed. This system uses inches, feet, yrds, nd miles to mesure length. This system is still used in few countries, ut the Metric System developed in Frnce in 1789 is now used more commonly throughout the world. The sic unit for length is the metre (m). Other smller nd lrger units re sed on powers of 10 from the metre, which mens tht metric lengths cn e written s deciml numers.

We therefore need to multiply. When we convert from one unit to lrger unit, there will e less lrger units. We therefore need to divide. 1 cm =10mm 1 m = 100 cm 1 km = 1000 m km m cm mm

11 MEASUREMENT (Chpter 8) 173 Discussion How could you mesure the perimeter of figures with curved oundries? C AREA Look t the plcemt nd the postcrd longside. The surfce of the plcemt is clerly lrger thn the surfce of the postcrd. We sy tht the plcemt hs greter re thn the postcrd. Are is mesurement of the size of surfce. Discussion Are In groups of 4 or 5, discuss the following: 1 Decide how nd why ech of the following words hs link with the word re: pint, lwnseed, sunurn, crpet, dnger, moile phones, cr prking, rinfll, electortes. Use dictionry to check the menings of the words you re unsure of. 2 Wht res would the following people work with? List two exmples for ech of the people: frmer, tiler, crpenter, dermtologist, dressmker, police officer, lndscpe grdener, glzier, town plnner, pinter, politicin, crtogrpher, surveyor. We cn compre the res of two shpes y dividing them into re units of equl size.

12 174 MEASUREMENT (Chpter 8) EXERCISE 8C.1 1 For ech of the following pirs of shpes: i count the numer of re units in ech shpe ii determine which shpe hs the lrger re. A B A B c A B d A B e A B SQUARE UNITS As you hve seen, it is possile to compre res using vriety of shpes. There re mny ojects mde y humns which cn e divided into squres, so we choose squre unit to e universl unit for mesuring re. We write this s 1 unit 2. 1 unit2

13 MEASUREMENT (Chpter 8) 175 A squre cn e divided into two tringles: The re of ech tringle is 1 2 unit2. The re of closed figure, no mtter wht shpe, is the numer of squre units it encloses. EXERCISE 8C.2 1 Count the numer of squre units to find the re of ech of the following shpes: c d e f g h units 2 or u 2 is used to represent squre units. i j k l m n 2 Which of the shpes in 1 hs the: gretest re lest re?

14 176 MEASUREMENT (Chpter 8) METRIC UNITS In the metric system, we use the units of length mm, cm, m, nd km s sis for the units of re. 1 squre millimetre (mm 2 ) is the re enclosed y squre of side length 1 mm. 1 squre centimetre (cm 2 ) is the re enclosed y squre of side length 1 cm. 1 mm2 1 cm2 1 squre metre (m 2 ) is the re enclosed y squre of side length 1 m. 1 squre kilometre (km 2 ) is the re enclosed y squre of side length 1 km. 1 m2 1 m 1 km2 1 km Whereis mps re printed with permission from Sensis Pty Ltd nd suject to copyright. 15 MEASUREMENT (Chpter 8) Ech of the squres in these shpes hs re 1 squre centimetre. Count the squres to find the re of ech shpe. c 4 Consider the picture of throom. c How mny tiles hve een used for: i the floor ii the wlls? Do not forget tiles ehind nd under the sink cinet, nd in the shower. There re 25 tiles for ech squre metre. How mny squre metres of tiles were used? The tiles cost $36:90 per squre metre, nd the tiler chrged $18:00 per squre metre to glue them. Wht ws the totl cost of tiling? 5 Ech of the smll squres in these shpes hs re 1 squre millimetre. Find the re of ech shpe. c d Discussion When you found the res of the shpes in question 5, did you count ech individul squre? Is there quicker wy to find the re of these shpes? D THE AREA OF A RECTANGLE Consider rectngle 6 cm long nd 4 cm wide. 6 cm It contins 24 squre centimetres, so the re of the rectngle is 24 cm 2. 4 cm Insted of counting the individul squres, we cn multiply 6 4=24.

18 180 MEASUREMENT (Chpter 8) E VOLUME In Chpter 4, we lernt tht solid is n oject which occupies spce. The volume of solid is the mount of spce it occupies. As with units of re, the units for mesuring volume re relted to the units for mesuring length. We use cuic units to mesure volume. 1 cuic millimetre (mm 3 ) is the volume of cue with side of length 1 mm. 1 cuic centimetre (cm 3 ) is the volume of cue with side of length 1 cm. 1 cuic metre (m 3 ) is the volume of cue with side of length 1 m. 1 m EXERCISE 8E.1 1 Suggest suitle units of volume for: child s uilding lock uilding c cmer d ruish skip e tlet prescried y doctor.
