Evelyn Joslin: UKA Level 2 - Endurance plus numerous further development courses (e.g. endurance, strength and conditioning, polymerics, nutrition). Currently studying for UKA Endurance Event Group Coach I began my running journey over 10 years ago when a friend persuaded me to enter a half marathon. I know what it is like to be a beginner, or to have to fit your training around a busy career, I understand what it feels like to progress but also to plateau and the frustrations from getting injured. I ve been coaching runners for over 6 years across a range of experiences and abilities and am now also mentoring trainee coaches. Recently, I have also started running athletics strength and conditioning sessions for a group of local children My main interest is in helping runners achieve their goals while continuing to enjoy running. I can help you get started in a safe and sustainable manner so you learn to love running and minimise the chance of getting injured or I can help you improve your running through structured training, improving your strength or just providing the motivation to get out there. I moved to Oxford and joined HRR in 2010 and quickly established the Tuesday evening interval sessions. This is structured training for all abilities of distance runners, although it is best suited those running regularly. The purpose of the sessions is to build speed endurance and develop good running technique. Improve these and you will find your race pace at all distances from 5k and upwards improves. Importantly, we also have a lot of fun. If you have any questions or want to see how you can work together to improve and get more out of your running, then please contact me at coach.evelyn@icloud.com.
Sharon Pyner: Leader in Running Fitness (LiRF) Currently studying for the Coach in Running Fitness (CiRF) and attending the Local Coach Development Programme sessions I have been running for about 7 years and have been involved with coaching sessions at Headington Road Runners since As an aspiring running endurance coach, my main interest is simply to help runners improve, whether they run 5 minute miles or 15 minute miles. I m a big fan of speed sessions and threshold runs and am keen to demonstrate the benefits of those to anyone who will listen! II also lead a weekly track session that works on speed endurance, which is restricted to those who have been running longer than 12 months. If you want any further information about the sessions I lead or want to chat about whether they might be right for you, then please contact me on sharonpyner@yahoo.co.uk.
Natasha Giannousi-Varney: Currently working towards a Certificate in Coaching Sport and a a Coach in Running Fitness (certified by British Athletics). I am certified as a Running Leader and have attended numerous coaching seminars on topics such as running endurance, sports nutrition, first aid in sport, fundamentals of sport (ABCs) etc. I have been an avid long-distance runner since 1997 (although I did more speedier distances as a youngster). I have completed 10 marathons with a PB of at the Athens Classic Marathon in 2008, and I have ran countless 5K and 10K races. I am interested in coaching (and running!) all distances from 5K upwards and especially the half-marathon and marathon. I would also like to help beginners and new mums start or return to running. I have been a member of HRR since 2010 when I moved to Oxford from Athens and I have enjoyed every minute of it! I am currently making my own running comeback after a maternity break. For all your coaching questions, you can contact me at natgiann@gmail.com.
Anita James: Recently qualified as a UKA Childrens Coach. This encompasses: throws, Jumps, Endurance, Speed, plus athletics conditioning. Experience and Achievements I began my running career 10 years and have raced many 5k and 10k races and a few longer distances. I embarked upon coaching 2 year ago, initially with the Leadership In Running Fitness, then Coaching Assistant and finally qualified as a Children s Coach. I am keen to progress my personal development and have recently attended workshops in jumping and athletics conditioning. I am particularly interested in coaching children, and coach 8-13 year olds (including my own children) every Wednesday at Horspath track, Oxford. The children are mainly from the villages of Wheatley and Great Milton. I am licensed and qualified to coach adults as well. I have been a member of HRR since 2004, a committee member for 5 years and am currently in my second year as Vice-Chair. Anita505@btinternet.com
Andy Lawrence: UKA Level 2 - Endurance Leadership in Running and Walking. I began running on an occasion basis to keep myself fit for other sports, including football, squash and rowing, until I decided to enter my first race, the Reading Half Marathon in Within two years I had completed my first marathon. Since then, I ve completed many more races, from 5K to Marathon, and broadened my endurance racing experiences to triathlons and Orienteering. My proudest achievements have been completing the Ironman triathlon in 2009 and last year, running 40 races within a year (which included some of the more bizarre races such as the UK Wife-Carrying race and the UK backwards race). My main coaching interest is to provide advice to runners from all backgrounds to motivate and help to achieve challenging and ambitious race goals, particularly on conditioning for longer events. I can also offer some guidance on how to supplement your running with other types of training (swimming, cycling, walking). As well as how to safely run backwards! I was encouraged to join HRR by a friend in 2005 and immediately enjoyed the camaraderie and motivation that the club provides. Having previously taught and coached in a number of other sports I pursued my coaching qualification in Endurance running in 2006 and subsequently ran the Iffley Road track sessions, organised a number of stretching and marathon running talks for club members and provided informal advice and motivation to a number of novice and improving runners. I was a committee member between arl245@hotmail.com
Tony Pound Q ualifications Level 3 Personal Training Certification Various Health and Fitness Related Courses and Certifications UKA Leader In Running For Fitness Currently completing the UKA Coaching in Running for Fitness Course. In my 20s and early 30s my running was more hit and miss and had no real structure but I returned to running in my late 30s and while approaching my 40th birthday I decided to sign up for my first full distance Marathon and for this I picked the New York Marathon! Not a bad way to start! So started a journey of half marathons (to many to mention), full Marathons (New York, Paris, London and Salisbury!) and then moving into various distance triathlons, culminating in completing the UK Ironman in Bolton in After being asked by friends and colleagues for help with training and tips I decided to study for and complete my Personal Training certification. This has not only helped with my own training but allowed me to pass on the correct information and really get more involved in helping people. I then moved more into coaching runners and endurance athletes. I work with a variety of athletes and abilities, from beginners, returning runners and existing runners looking for that PB. I moved to Oxford and joined HRR in 2014 If you have any questions relating to your training or want to see how I can help you to improve and get more out of your running, then please contact me at tpound11@aol.com or via
Mary Russell Leadership in Running Fitness; MSc Sport and Exercise Nutrition; commitment to the slow end of the field. Other than a bit of swimming, managed quite successfully to avoid exercise until my mid-40 s. Walked a marathon, for charity, and recognised the health benefits; started to run as a more time-efficient form of exercise and eventually got hooked but along the way found it very difficult to build up from nothing to c.50 minutes. Have raced for several years and collected some medals in the W45 HRR road race championships, due more to perseverance than performance! Walking; competitive microlight flying (as navigator); involvement with local almshouse charity and national medical research charity; being semi-retired and having time to do stuff. Member since Leader / co-ordinator of annual Beginners and improver groups; Round Norfolk Relay team manager; Race for Life co-ordinator. mary.russell@tiscali.co.uk Pat Read: UKA Level 2 Throws, Jumps, Endurance, Speed, plus athletics conditioning. UKA Children s Coach. Have coached 8-12 year olds for five years in track, field and endurance including cross-country. Includes winning teams and one county champion. Currently coaching children at Horspath Track and in Great Milton. At the same time I am mentoring trainee coaches. I organise an annual Area Sports event at Horspath Track for nine local primary schools. Many HRRs help out. I coach children from my village of Great Milton for this event, plus other athletics competitions and cross-country leagues. Was there on the first run, on the committee by the second run, actively involved for the first 19 years of the club until injury ended all active running aspirations. Now wheeled out as a useful relic when an official, consultant, or old hand is required. patread@rufty.demon.co.uk
