RACE START TOWING THE LINE Race information on our web site contains many suggestions and recommendations to help runners prepare for and complete the TRTER. Race Management and volunteers pledge to do everything possible to make your TRTER challenge a successful event you will always remember. Our medical team, along with runners, crews and volunteers, participated in developing many of the recommendations contained on the web site. Proper preparation is critical to a successful and enjoyable experience. All runners and crews should read this information carefully. TRTER is a 501 (c)(3) Non-Profit event The net proceeds from this event benefit the Tahoe Rim Trail Association trail maintenance program, the Lake Tahoe Nevada State Parks backcountry mountain bike patrol, South Lake Tahoe and Carson City High School cross-country teams, Carson High School Volleyball Team, the Carson City Boy Scouts, Carson City American Legion, Northern Nevada Children s Cancer Foundation and more. We are very pleased that we have exceeded $125,000 in donations from the past several years' proceeds of the TRTER 55K/50M/100M. TRAINING RUNS The Training Runs are announced on the TRTER Facebook page and via to registered participants. COURSE MARKINGS TRTER proudly provides course flagging with 3M commercial grade reflective material. This flagging is placed approximately every 200 meters. CREW ACCESS POINTS & DIRECTIONS
There is only one crew/access point for 55K runners: The start/finish line area of Spooner State Park. 50 Mile and 100 Mile crews will have an additional access point: Mile 30 for the 50 mile, and Mile 30/80 for 100 Mile, both of which are located at Diamond Peak Ski Resort. After 9 pm Diamond Peak aid station will be moved inside the lodge. This a prime place for crew to hang out and wait for their runner. There is a large deck with outdoor seating. Seating is also available inside the ski lodge for the night time crews to get out of the cold at mile 80. No dogs at the lodge or on the deck. Family and Crew members parking at Diamond Peak Ski Resort MUST park in designated parking only. Do not impede traffic on Ski Way Blvd. If a crew or family member's vehicle does impede traffic their runner will be disqualified from the race. NO Exceptions! The other crew access point for 100M runners is the Stonehenge 50 Mile aid station just below the parking area of Spooner State Park. See event parking instructions for the easiest access point for your crew to park. Crew members wanting to make the 3-mile climb to Tunnel Creek Aid Station can do so by parking along HWY 28 by Tunnel Creek Cafe. Please do NOT park in the Tunnel Creek Cafe parking lot. Access the aid station via Tunnel Creek Road. There is no driving to this aid station. This is a very busy aid station and the aid station captain has requested no dogs and no unsupervised children. RACE BIBS Numbers must be visible at all times. Runners are required to check in and check out of each aid station. Please place your race bib on the front of your body for easy recognition by aid station personnel. It is the responsibility of the runner to make sure they are checked in and out of each aid station. DROP BAGS Drop bags are allowed at Hobart, Tunnel Creek, Diamond Peak and Stonehenge for 50M and 100M runners only. 100 Mile Runner Drop Bags are due at the drop off point at Packet Pick-up no later than 3:00 pm on Friday. 50 Mile Runner Drop Bags for Hobart Aid Station are due at the drop off point at Packet Pick-up no later than 3:00 pm on Friday. Tunnel Creek and Diamond Peak Drop Bags may be dropped off on Friday at Packet Pick-up or Saturday morning, although it is recommended that they be dropped off on Friday. All Finish Line drop bags should be taken to the finish line area on race morning.
There is no drop bag service for 55K! 55K runners wishing to have drop bags available during the event will need to make their own arrangements. DROP BAG RETURN: Please be aware that drop bags will not be returned until Sunday at approximately 10:00 am from Diamond Peak and approximately 3:00 pm from Tunnel Creek. Any unclaimed 50M drop bags will also be available at the awards ceremony on Sunday afternoon. Plan accordingly. Finish Drop Bag retrieval will be available near the Finish Line/Ultra Lounge for runners who wish to leave drop bags before the race with plans to collect them once finished. All other drop bags will be delivered to the upper parking lot at the Spooner Lake State Park, except Stonehenge dropbags, which will be available at Stonehenge. Runners are solely responsible for collecting their drop bags. ALL UNCLAIMED DROP BAGS REMAINING AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE AWARDS CEREMONY WILL BE DISPOSED OF AT THE DISCRETION OF RACE MANAGEMENT. The Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Runs is not responsible for mailing or shipping any unclaimed drop bags. REGARDING DROP BAGS: Drop bags must not be larger than 10"wide X 8"tall and no longer than 20". Drop bags must weigh less than 20 pounds. Make sure drop bags are made of a durable material, no paper or cardboard containers. You are limited to one drop bag per aid station. Pacers are not allowed drop bags. NO ICE CHESTS OR COOLERS. ALL DROP BAGS MUST BE CLEARLY LABELED WITH NAME, BIB NUMBER AND DESIRED AID STATION. DO NOT LEAVE VALUABLES IN YOUR DROP BAGS. RACE MANAGEMENT IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR MISSING OR DAMAGED CONTENTS. DO NOT leave perishable items or glass bottles in your drop bags. Nighttime temperatures along the Tahoe Rim Trail Endurance Runs can drop into the low 30's, even in July. Exposed ridge top sections commonly experience strong winds, even at night. You are strongly encouraged to leave warm clothing and an extra flashlight and batteries at the aid station you plan to visit at night. Onset of Hypothermia is one of the leading causes of drops at night! AID STATIONS The only aid stations that are accessible by vehicle are the Stonehenge Aid Station and the Diamond Peak Ski Resort main lodge. All other aid stations are a 4-8 mile hike to access. The Stonehenge and Diamond Peak aid stations are the only places where crew and pacers can easily assist their runners.
We provide limited shuttle service from Spooner Lake State Park to the lodge at Diamond Peak Resort. Transport can be arranged with the shuttle van coordinator. Our aid stations are some of the best you ll ever visit during an ultra-event. They are fully stocked and our volunteers are ready to help you refuel, rehydrate and get back on the course. Many will have surprises that may cause you to sit a spell for the entertainment but remember, your goal is to get to the finish line! WEATHER AND CLOTHING The temperature can vary from the mid-90s in the daytime to the high 30s at night. Typically, a July day starts crisp and cool with sunshine and ends with the possibility of afternoon showers. High Sierra weather is notorious for its rapid and violent changes. During the race it could rain, hail and even snow! Lightning is hazardous, especially above timberline. Hypothermia can occur easily with a combination of decreasing temperature, wind and precipitation. The confusion that occurs with hypothermia can be deadly. The following items are strongly suggested: Rain gear Windbreaker (with hood) Technical or wool socks, hat and gloves Changes of socks, shoes and dry clothing LED lights or spare flashlights at either Diamond Peak or Tunnel Creek. DROPPING FROM THE RACE Most importantly, you must notify the aid station captain that you are dropping from the event. Bibs and timing chips must be given to the aid station captain, indicating you ve dropped. If you drop at Diamond Peak your chances are fairly good that you ll be able to catch a ride back to Spooner Lake State Park without too long of a delay. If you drop at one of the back country aid stations you may have to wait up to several hours before transportation back to the start/finish is available. So, before you make your final decision; find a chair, get some fluids and food into you. Then rest a while to see if you can recover. On the other end of the spectrum, if either the aid station captain or medical staff makes the decision that you are not in a condition to continue, they have the authority to pull you from the event FINAL WORD! DOWNGRADES There will be no change of distance during the race (i.e., an individual registered to run the 100M course MAY NOT downgrade to the 50M course once the event has started). Any runner who does not complete the entire distance for which they are registered will be disqualified and listed as DNF (Did Not Finish). PACERS Pacers can pick up pacer bibs during Friday Packet Pick-up and during the race at the Stonehenge 50 Mile Aid Station and Diamond Peak Aid Station. TRTER allows pacers for 50 mile and 100 mile runners. Pacers should be as self-sufficient as possible. 50 Mile runners can
pick up their pacers in only one location: the 30-mile aid station at Diamond Peak. Pacers are required to sign the event waiver in order to get their pacer bib. 100-mile runners can pick up a pacer at Stonehenge 50 Mile aid station located in Spooner Lake State Park and at Mile 80, Diamond Peak aid station. The primary objective of a pacer is the safety of their runner; including route finding, ensuring that the runner continues to eat and drink, and making sure the runner leaves the aid stations with adequate clothing and supplies to reach the next aid station. Pacers should be aware of all significant medical conditions of their runner, and know how to respond if required. At a minimum, the pacer should carry a basic medical kit, a cell phone and a space blanket. Pacers are not allowed to push, pull, carry or tow the runner (NO MULING). Any special pacing situations or requests must be pre-approved by race management. CUT-OFF TIMES Check out the CUTOFF SCHEDULE. AWARDS
The 55K and 50M finishers will receive a plaque at the finish line upon completing the race. The 100M runners will receive their finisher s belt buckle at the awards ceremony at the Ultra Lounge (Start/Finish area) following the 35 hour final cut-off at 4 pm. POST RACE FOOD The TRTER Ultra Lounge is open for the duration of the race in the finish line Village with refreshments, snacks and Tahoe Beer (provided by Brewer's Cabinet). La Enchilada Food Truck will be serving meals Saturday from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm and Sunday from 5:00 am to 5:00 pm. Runners can get a free meal with their race bib. Family and crew members will need to pay for their meals. The prices are reasonable and they accept cash & credit cards. *NOTE: Please be aware that no dogs are allowed in the TRTER Ultra Lounge Area. On Saturday, Bodhi Tree School of Massage provides massages until 5:00 pm. After 5:00 pm on Saturday and all day Sunday the world famous Monsters of Massage take charge. THANK YOU TO OUR VOLUNTEERS AND SPONSORS! Please take time along the way to thank the numerous volunteers and gracious sponsors. We couldn t put this race on without them! We have well over 1200 volunteers working the race. SPEAKING OF VOLUNTEERS: If anyone would like to volunteer or if a runner's family and/or friends would like to volunteer for a few hours please contact Kati Bell, our volunteer coordinator.
