The clock at the start line gives a signal (one beep) 10 seconds before the start time and, then, 5 seconds before the start time, the count-down signal with short beeps. At the exact start time the clock gives a long beep.
13 In the sprint qualification men and women have only one heat. One man and one woman will start at the same time. Both have separated starting channels. After the start signal (a long beep given by the start line clock) the competitor may take his/her map from the map board. Start and warm up in Sprint Qualification In the sprint final the race map is placed face down next to the start line. 10 seconds before the start the official places his hand on the competitor s shoulder. At start time, the last long beep, the official releases the competitor by taking his hand off the competitor s shoulder and the competitor may take his/her map. The start triangle is marked on the map. In the terrain it is marked with a control flag. The route from the start line to the flag is marked and the competitors must follow it. Cooling down after the Sprint Qualification is towards south from the finish. The permitted area is only the non-asphalted road beside the River Vuoksi. Distance to turnaround point is 500 meters. Procedures for late starters Late starters must report at the pre-start call-up. An official will accompany the competitor through the normal procedure to the start line. In the start area, if there is enough time for the normal starting procedure, the official will place the late starter on the right starting area. If the competitor is too late to follow the normal procedure, the official will give him/her a new start time between two other competitors on the same course. In all cases of lateness caused by the competitor, his/her allocated start time will be counted. If a competitor is late trough the fault of the organizer, he/she will be timed with their real start time. SPRINT RELAY Start and change over The runners of the 1st leg will be led by the organiser from the quarantine area, through the Arena, to the start area approx. at At 15.10, after passing the check-in, runners of legs 2-4 are allowed to enter the changeover area. The route from the quarantine area to the changeover area is marked and it must be followed. The route is the same as in the individual competition. The distance between the quarantine area and the start is approx.
14 320 metres. The space inside the start and changeover area is limited, which doesn t make it possible to warm up by running. Only one team official per team can enter the area. In thesprint Relay the number bibs and the numbers on the maps have the same color code. Leg 1 white, leg 2 green, leg 3 yellow and leg 4 red. Leg 1 Leg 2 Leg 3 Leg 4 There are not any map changes during the relay legs. Maps are sealed in plastic bags. The changeover is done by giving the map to the outgoing runner across the separation barrier. When the runner crosses the finish line, he/she gives the course map to a finish official. Then the runner follows the route to the map board and takes the new map with the team s start number. Please note, that it is the competitor s responsibility to take the correct map. After taking the map, the runner goes to the separation barrier and gives it to the outgoing runner. There are extra maps near the map board. If the runner notices that he/she doesn t have the correct map, the runner can come back to the separation barrier and ask an official to give the correct one from the map board. Only team officials, who have signed in the quarantine area are allowed to enter the changeover area. The marked route from the quarantine area to the change over must be used. Please note, that once leaving the quarantine or changeover area, you are not allowed to enter there anymore. 19.
