The single-day meet inside the Athletic Training Center is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. with running events following at 11:30 a.m. A total of 30 teams and over 500 athletes will compete alongside Tech in the first of back-to-back home meets to open the 2013 season. Texas Tech returns a total of eight All-Americans for the 2013 campaign, including five who earned All-America honors during the 2012 indoor season. The Red Raiders also enter the 2013 indoor season with the 2012 NCAA Cross Country Champion in senior distance runner Kennedy Kithuka. Kithuka was named the 2012 en s Athlete of the Year for the 2012 cross country season and was named to The Bowerman en s Preseason Watch List this week. Texas Tech will return to the ATC next weekend as the program hosts the two-day asked Rider Open meet. TEXAS TECH SNAPSHOT Texas Tech opens the 2013 track and field season Saturday at the Athletic Training Center by hosting the Texas Tech Open. The meet is the first of back-to-back home indoor meets to open the year. Texas Tech returns six athletes who earned All-America honors in A total of nine athletes earned All-America honors during the 2012 indoor season before the Red Raiders and Lady Raiders saw 13 earn All-America honors last spring during the outdoor season. Texas Tech s Wes Kittley enters his 14th season as the director of Texas Tech track and field and cross country. The Abilene, Texas native is the second-longest tenured head coach at Texas Tech having transformed the track and field program into a regular contender on the national stage. The Texas Tech track and field program was represented by seven former athletes at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London where the contingent earned a gold, silver and bronze medal. Jason Young became the second male athlete in school history to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team as he competed in the discus throw. 3 WHO TO WATCH - KATIE GRIES SENIOR - HURDLER - 55H PR: 7.74 Senior Lady Raider hurdler Katie Grimes will look to improve upon a stellar junior season which saw her break school records in both the 55-meter and 60-meter hurdles before earning All-America Second Team honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Grimes re-wrote the women s sprint hurdles record book last season and enters 2013 with the top-three times in school history in the 55-meter hurdles. Grimes set the school record mark of 7.74 during the 2012 season-opener on Jan. 14. She later broke the school record in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.18 at the New exico Elite in ebruary. The time was later converted to 8.20 due to altitude and ended the year as the 14th fastest time in the country. The China Spring, Texas native was the 2011 Big 12 Indoor Champion Tech s first-ever male indoor Big 12 Champion in the event. eyers is one of just six male vaulters in Tech history to clear 17-7 indoors, while his clearance of last season ranked 17th nationally. WHAT TO WATCH STORYLINES 2013 STORYLINES TEXAS TECH OPENS 2013 SEASON Texas Tech opens the 2013 indoor season Saturday with the Texas Tech Open held inside the Athletic Training Center on the Texas Tech campus. The one-day meet is the first of back-to-back home meets to open the season as the program will host the asked Rider Open, a two-day meet, next weekend. A total of 33 teams from across the region will compete in the first of three meets to be held at the ATC during the indoor season. TECH RETURNS IVE 2012 INDOOR ALL-AERICANS Texas Tech returns five athletes who earned All-America honors during the 2012 indoor season. The group includes senior long jumper Bryce Lamb, senior pole vaulter Kyal eyers, senior hurdler Katie Grimes, senior sprinter Candace Jackson and senior sprinter Olivia Lewis. Lamb enters his senior campaign as a three-time All-American and two-time Big 12 Champion, while Grimes and eyers both earned their first two All-America honors last season. Tech returns a total of eight athletes who have earned All-America recognition during their careers led by senior Candace Jackson who is a decorated eight-time All-American in the sprints and relays. KITHUKA TABBED TO BOWERAN PRESEASON EN S WATCH LIST Texas Tech senior distance runner Kennedy Kithuka has officially been named to The Bowerman Preseason en s Watch List as announced by the United States Track and ield and Cross Country Coaches Association Wednesday. Kithuka enters the 2013 indoor track and field season after becoming the first male athlete in school history to capture the NCAA Cross Country Championship this fall. The Thika, Kenya native was later named the National ale Athlete of the year for the 2012 cross country season after going undefeated in seven meets. The most prestigious postseason award in collegiate track and field, The Bowerman is given annually to the most outstanding male and female athlete in collegiate track and field. The award debuted in 2009 and is named for legendary Oregon track and field coach Bill Bowerman. TECH AT THE 2012 OLYPICS Texas Tech had its best showing in school history at the 2012 London Olympics as a total of seven former student-athletes competed at the Games. The Texas Tech contingent didn t disappoint as the crew brought home three medals a gold, silver and bronze. eanwhile, former Red Raider thrower Jason Young became the second male athlete in school history to qualify for the U.S. Olympic team as he competed in the discus throw in London. White, who had a breakout 2012 as one of the top young sprinters for the Lady Raiders enters with a personal-best time of 7.03 in the 55-meter dash and a personal-best time of in the 200-meter. eanwhile, senior sprinter Isaiah Gill will anchor the Red Raider sprinters, and be a veteran on the relay teams. Gill finished third last year at the Big 12 Championships in the 400-meter dash, and enters the 2013 season with a personal-best time of in the event. Brathwaite along with Jamele ason, the 2012 NCAA 400-meter hurdle runner-up and Puerto Rico Olympian, graduated following the 2012 season. TEXAS TECH DISTANCE RUNNERS 2012 NCAA Cross Country Champion Kennedy Kithuka will lead the pack of Texas Tech distance runners as the 2013 track and field indoor season arrives. Kithuka, who was named the 2012 ale Athlete of the Year for the 2012 cross country season and appears on The Bowerman en s Preseason Watch List, went undefeated in seven meets including the NCAA Championship. Kithuka captured indoor national titles in the 3,000-meter run and as a member of the Distance edley Relay in 2012 while at Wayland Baptist. He also won national titles in the 10,000-meter run and the 5,000-meter run during the 2012 outdoor season. The Red Raiders also return the services of senior Ezekiel Kissorio who emerged during the 2012 outdoor season finishing sixth at the Big 12 Championships in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The Lady Raiders return the services of Chelsea Scott and Rachel olan, both seniors who competed at the Big 12 Championships last season. Caitlin Waters, a junior, also returns after garnering two top-five finishes in the 800-meter run last season. TEXAS TECH LONG JUPERS Texas Tech welcomes back senior Bryce Lamb a three-time All-American and two-time Big 12 Champion in the long jump. Lamb earned All-America irst Team in the indoor long jump last season after advancing to the NCAA Championships and finishing third overall with a mark of 7.86-meters ( ). Lamb turned in a season-best mark of 7.94m ( ) while his collegiate-best is a school record of 8.14m ( ) which he recorded to win the 2010 Big 12 Indoor Championships during his freshman campaign. The Lady Raiders return the services of Avril cghee in 2013 who had a breakout freshman campaign as a talented triple jumper. cghee finished fifth overall at the 2012 Big 12 Indoor Championships while turning in a season-best mark of 12.35m ( ). TEXAS TECH HIGH JUPERS Texas Tech will return a young crop of talented high jumpers in The Red Raiders will be led by sophomore JaCorian Duffield who advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships as a freshman and ended his outdoor year with four clearances over seven-feet. Duffield meanwhile cleared a season-best indoor bar of 2.17m ( ) at the Red Raider Open which marked the second-highest indoor clearance by a Red Raider in nine years. eanwhile, the Lady Raiders return freshman ichaela Palu who redshirted during the 2012 indoor season before competing during the outdoor season. Palu cleared a season-best height of 1.71m ( ) to finish first overall at the LSU Invitational before clearing a bar of 1.70m ( ) at the Big 12 Championships. TEXAS TECH POLE VAULTERS Texas Tech junior Kyal eyers returns to the pole vault runway for Texas Tech in 2013 after earning All-America honors during both the indoor and outdoor seasons a year ago. eyers, the 2011 Big 12 indoor champion, finished 11th overall at the NCAA Indoor Championships last season and cleared six bars over 17-feet including a personal best mark of 5.38m ( ). Seniors Jeremy Doddridge and Boston Spiva also return for the Red Raiders.

5 HEAD COACH WES KITTLEY - 14th Season Texas Tech Director of Track and ield and Cross Country, Wes Kittley enters his 14th season at the helm of the Red Raider and Lady Raider track and field program in The architect of a track and field dynasty at nearby Division II Abilene Christian, Kittley has built the Texas Tech program into a perennial power on the national stage for the past decade. Under his tutelage, Texas Tech has produced nine Olympic Qualifiers, four Olympic edalists, 13 national champions, 205 All-Americans and 88 Big 12 Champions. eanwhile he guided Texas Tech to its first Big 12 team championship in school history as the Red Raiders took home the men s Big 12 Championship during the 2005 season. Kittley most recently earned the recognition following the 2012 season after also receiving the award in Kittley and his renowned coaching staff have produced four NCAA Champions in the last four seasons. That streak began as Sally Kipyego, the most decorated individual athlete in NCAA history, ended her remarkable career with her ninth NCAA Championship as she won the women s indoor 5,000-meter crown in Kipyego made history as an athlete under Kittley and his staff. The Kenyan native broke the NCAA record with nine national titles during her career in both track and field and cross country before going on to qualify for the Kenyan Olympic team. At the 2012 London Olympics she won silver in the 10,000-meter run before nearly medaling again in the 5,000-meter run and finishing fourth. EVENT BREAKDOWN (Cont.) TEXAS TECH THROWS Texas Tech will return a balance of talent in the throws as 2011 All-American and Big 12 Shot Put Champion Ifeatu Okafor returns for her senior indoor season. Okafor recorded the fourth-best throw in school history at the 2011 Big 12 Championships a personal-best mark of 17.10m ( ). eanwhile, the Red Raiders return the services of sophomore Kole Weldon who is coming off a freshman outdoor campaign where he advanced to the NCAA Championships. Weldon enters the 2013 indoor season with a personal-best indoor shot put mark of 17.59m ( ) and a personal-best indoor weight throw mark of 17.20m ( ). TEXAS TECH RELAYS Texas Tech s Lady Raider 4x400 relay team earned All-America irst Team honors in 2012 after finishing seventh overall at the national meet. The Lady Raiders return both seniors Candace Jackson and Olivia Lewis from that squad which recorded two of the top-five times in school history during the 2012 season.
