1 Athletic Australia Selectin Plicy 2019 Wrld Crss Cuntry Champinships ATHLETICS AUSTRALIA SELECTION POLICY WORLD CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS AARHUS, DENMARK 30 MARCH 2019 This dcument sets ut the basis n which Athletics Australia will select its Team fr the IAAF Wrld Crss Cuntry Champinships in Aarhus, Denmark 30 March Preamble: Nte n 2019 IAAF Wrld Champinships and 2020 Olympic Games Athletes and caches shuld cnsider the prximity f the Australian Track & Field Champinships (particularly the 5000m event) when planning their 2019 prgram IAAF Wrld Champinships Athletes wh finish in the tp 15 in the senir Men s and Wmen s races at the 2019 IAAF Wrld Crss Cuntry Champinships will have achieved a qualifying perfrmance fr the 10,000m fr the 2019 IAAF Wrld Champinships. Selectin fr the IAAF Wrld Champinships will be in accrdance t the Athletics Australia Selectin Plicy, which will be published n the AA website in December Olympic Games As part f the new IAAF qualificatin system that may be implemented in 2020, athletes placing in the tp 24 f the senir races r tp 8 f the junir races will scre IAAF ranking pints fr the 10000m event. Hwever, athletes can als earn IAAF ranking pints twards the 10000m event by cmpeting in 5000m events. Shuld the new IAAF qualificatin system be implemented in 2020, results frm the 2019 IAAF Wrld Crss Cuntry Champinships can cunt twards an athlete s ranking in the 10,000m. Fr cmparisn, the belw table shws the equivalent perfrmance that wuld be required f an athlete that finishes 3 rd in the 5000m at the Australian Track and Field Champinships t match the pints earned in the IAAF Wrld Crss Cuntry Champinship. 1 1 Fr clarity, tw (2) perfrmances are required t receive an IAAF Wrld Ranking in the 10000m. One (1) f these perfrmances must be in a 10000m race. An athlete cannt rely n a scre frm the IAAF Wrld Crss Cuntry Champinships and a 5000m race fr a 10000m IAAF Wrld Ranking. Page 1 v1.9 13/11/2018

The plicy is aligned with the Australian Institute f Sprt High Perfrmance strategy and with the Athletics Australia Strategic Plan t achieve medals, supprted by additinal tp eight places, at the Olympic Games and IAAF Wrld Athletics Champinships. Specifically, the plicy aims t facilitate the fllwing utcmes: Selecting athletes that are realistic tp 24 finishers (as an individual athlete) r tp six (6) finishers (as part f a team) in Aarhus, and; Prviding majr Champinships experience t ptential future Olympic and Wrld Champinships tp eight finishers. 2 Standards, criteria and athlete numbers There are n perfrmance standards fr the 2019 Wrld Crss Cuntry Champinships. 2.1 Athletics Australia may cntest fur (4) events at the 2019 Wrld Crss Cuntry Champinships. Thse events are: a) Senir Men 10km b) Senir Wmen 10km c) Junir Men 8km d) Junir Wmen 6km 2.2 Each event will be run as bth an individual champinship and team champinship event. IAAF rules permit a maximum f six (6) athletes per event with fur (4) athletes t scre pints fr a team (Team Event). 2.3 Athletes may be selected and entered as individuals nly r as part f the Team Event. An athlete selected as an individual will represent Australia as part f the Team Event if the required number f athletes are selected t represent Australia in the relevant divisin. Athletes shuld nt assume that Athletics Australia will select enugh athletes in a particular divisin t frm a team in the Team Event. The discretin is abslute and need nt be exercised. 2.4 It is nt the intentin f Athletics Australia t select a team fr the medley relay due t: Page 2 v1.9 13/11/2018

3 Athletic Australia Selectin Plicy 2019 Wrld Crss Cuntry Champinships a) The scheduling f events b) The frmat f the relay and the prximity between the IAAF Wrld Crss Cuntry Champinships and Australian Track & Field Champinships. 3 Selectin A trial will be held fr the 2019 Wrld Crss Cuntry Champinships ( Selectin Trial ) in Canberra n 27 January Autmatic Selectin The athletes finishing 1 st and 2 nd in the Open Men s and Open Wmen s divisins at the Selectin Trial will be autmatically selected The right t autmatic selectin nly applies t the Senir Men and Senir Wmen. It des nt apply t either the Junir Girls r Junir Bys r Teams in any divisin. 3.2 Selectin at the Discretin f Selectrs Any remaining selectins will be made at the discretin f the Selectrs. This discretin is abslute and need nt be exercised In additin t meeting all f the eligibility criteria set ut in clause 4, athletes must satisfy the Selectrs that they will be capable f perfrming at a high level at the Wrld Crss Cuntry Champinships, and they are a: a) realistic tp 24 finisher (as an individual athlete); r b) realistic chance t cntribute t a team that will finish in the tp six (6) f the Team Event in Aarhus; r c) ptential future Olympic and Wrld Champinships tp eight finisher When exercising their discretin in relatin t any athlete under cnsideratin fr selectin in any event, the Selectrs must cnsider results achieved at the Selectin Trial, the 2018 Natinal Crss Cuntry Champinships, the 2018 Zatpek: 10, the 2018 De Castella 3000m, the 2018 Ondieki 3000m and ther relevant Crss Cuntry events When cnsidering the quality f perfrmance in the events in 3.2.3, the Selectrs must take int cnsideratin the quality and depth f field in each particular categry Withut in any way limiting the discretin set ut in this clause 3, the Selectrs may take int accunt the fllwing matters when selecting athletes: Quality f perfrmances in the 2018 Crss Cuntry seasn, especially the Natinal Crss Cuntry Champinship, Quality f perfrmances in rad and track events cnsidered relevant by the Selectrs as an indicatin f frm and fitness fr crss cuntry, Histry f past perfrmances in the Wrld Crss Cuntry Champinships and ther relevant internatinal events including track events, Current frm, Ptential t be cmpetitive at the 2019 Wrld Crss Cuntry Champinships. Fr the avidance f dubt, the matters set ut abve in this clause 3.2 are nt t be regarded as selectin criteria. They are matters that the Selectrs may cnsider in any Page 3 v1.9 13/11/2018

4 Athletic Australia Selectin Plicy 2019 Wrld Crss Cuntry Champinships cmbinatin, and in cmbinatin with any ther matters nt listed that in the pinin f the Selectrs are relevant in the selectin f the Team In exercising their discretin in relatin t any athlete under cnsideratin, the Selectrs will cnsider and take int accunt the recmmendatin f the High Perfrmance Directr, wh will cnsult clsely with the Head Cach, as t the matters set ut abve in this clause 3 with regard t the level f perfrmance at the Wrld Crss Cuntry Champinships and with regard t each athlete s future ptential If the Selectrs select an athlete n the basis f clause 3.2.2(b), then that athlete s selectin will nt be cnfirmed until and unless it is cnfirmed that Athletics Australia will be entering enugh individuals in the relevant divisin fr Athletics Australia t field a team in the Team Event in that divisin. Fr clarity, if the Selectrs selected an athlete slely fr their ability t cntribute t a team in the Team Event, and ther athletes wh were selected becme unavailable fr any reasn, this may mean that the remaining athletes can n lnger satisfy the criteria in clause 3.2.2(b). Accrdingly, the Selectrs may decide nt t cnfirm an athlete s selectin and that athlete will nt represent Australia at the 2019 Wrld Crss Cuntry Champinships. 4 Athlete Eligibility Criteria Only thse athletes wh qualify accrding t this clause will be eligible fr selectin in the Team: 4.1 Satisfy all IAAF natinality and Wrld Champinship participatin rules. 4.2 Be a citizen f Australia. 4.3 Be a registered member f Athletics Australia thrugh their Member Assciatin. 4.4 Cmplete and submit the nline Applicatin fr Cnsideratin fr Selectin frm (which can be fund at The frm must be submitted n later than 21 January The date fr submissin f the Applicatin fr Selectin may be extended at the discretin f the Chairman f Selectrs n the recmmendatin f the Directr f High Perfrmance. 4.5 Be and remain in gd standing with Athletics Australia and at all times cmply with Athletics Australia s Cde f Cnduct and cnduct themselves in a way that des nt bring themselves, their sprt r the Natinal Team int disrepute. Athletics Australia may cnsider past and present behaviural cnduct in determining whether an athlete is in gd standing. If Athletics Australia determines that an athlete is nt in gd standing, Athletics Australia may in its abslute discretin chse nt t select that athlete. 5 Selectin Meetings There will be ne selectin meeting t determine the athletes wh will be selected in the 2019 Wrld Crss Cuntry Champinships Team. 5 Athletic Australia Selectin Plicy 2019 Wrld Crss Cuntry Champinships Where the selectrs have a chice between tw r mre athletes fr selectin then they will priritise selectin in the fllwing rder: 6.1 Ptential t finish in the tp eight (8) at the 2019 Wrld Crss Cuntry Champinships, 6.2 Ptential t finish in the tp 24 at the 2019 Wrld Crss Cuntry Champinships, 6.3 Ptential t finish in the tp eight (8) at a future Olympic Games r IAAF Wrld Athletics Champinships. 6.4 If tw r mre athletes are cnsidered equally likely t meet ne f the criteria abve (e.g. if the Selectrs cnsider that tw r mre athletes are equally likely t finish in the tp eight) then the selectrs will priritise in the fllwing rder: Head t Head perfrmance frm 1 May 2018 t 27 January 2019, Recent frm and fitness. 6.5 Fr the avidance f dubt nly athletes wh have met the Eligibility Requirements may be selected subject t the applicatin f Sectin 2. Furthermre, the selectin f any athlete is at the abslute discretin f Athletics Australia. 7 Funding Athletics Australia reserves the right t impse a levy n athletes t participate in this Champinship. Where a levy is t be impsed, athletes will be ntified f the relevant amunt payable at the time f selectin. As a guide, it is likely t be in the range f $2,000 - $3, Appeal Prcess The appeal prcess can be fund in the Athletics Australia By-Laws (sectin 8) available at 9 Amendment t Plicy This Plicy can be amended at any time by Athletics Australia if it is f the pinin that such an amendment is necessary as a result f any change t the Participatin Rules, t give effect t the Plicy fllwing discvery f a drafting errr r versight, r fr any ther reasn determined t be in the best interests f Athletics Australia.
