2 Event Description: EVENT PACKET Join us on Saturday, March 31, 2012 at our first annual Hy-Vee Half and 5K Walk/Run for JDRF in the Fort Dodge Hy-Vee's effort to bring awareness and raise money for JDRF. Bring your friends and family down to join in the fight against juvenile diabetes. With an event for every age, the entire family is sure to have a great time! JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) is the worldwide leader for research to cure type 1 diabetes (T1D). It sets the global agenda for diabetes research, and is the largest charitable funder and advocate of diabetes science worldwide. The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. T1D is an autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults suddenly, and can be fatal. Until a cure is found, people with T1D have to test their blood sugar and give themselves insulin injections multiple times or use a pump--each day, every day of their lives. And even with that intensive care, insulin is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent its potential complications, which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, and amputation. Since its founding in 1970 by parents of children with T1D, JDRF has awarded more than $1.5 billion to diabetes research, including $107 million last year. More than 80 percent of JDRF's expenditures directly support research and researchrelated education. 3 What is the course for the half marathon and 5K? Half marathon route: The half marathon route will begin at Hy-Vee and will be an open course, consisting of road with concrete and asphalt surfaces, cement trail, gravel, and some grass. Road portions of the course will not be fully blocked off, so please be cautious of traffic. Here is a link for the proposed route of the half marathon. 5K route: The 5K will take place on the Kennedy Park trail system and park grounds. Runners may encounter rock, mulch, grass, bridges, mud and sand. Here is a link for the approximate 5K route. Is there a course time limit? Yes - runners must complete the half marathon course in 3 1/2 hours (~16 minute mile pace) and the 5k course in 1 hour (19.5 minute mile pace). The half marathon, 5k and Youth Runs all end at the same location, Kennedy Park. It is important that everyone honors the time limits. In order to comply with city and county permits, streets crossing the route must be reopened to vehicular traffic after the time limits. What will participants receive? Participants for the half, 5K and kids events will receive a garnet, long-sleeved shirt (see below) and a goodie bags for all racers that includes coupons, etc. Half marathon finishers will receive a finishers medal. We will also have a Carolina blue version of the shirt available for purchase with all proceeds going to JDRF! How do I register for the Hy-Vee Half & 5K? You can register for the Hy-Vee Half & 5K online through March 24. No paper or mailed entries are accepted. No registration for the half marathon or 5K at packet pickup or day of the event. 4 You can register for the Kids Run s online through the day of the race. Last minute kids run registration past the 24 th will be accepted but we cannot guarantee your child will receive a participate shirt so we prefer all registration is done online in advance. What is the deadline for registration? Saturday midnight March 24 is the last date and time for entering the Hy-Vee Half & 5K. All free kid s runs can be registered for through March 30 th at packet pickup. How do I know if I am registered? Runners will receive an upon completing of your on-line registration from Active.com Also your credit card will reflect your registration payment. All entrants will receive an with final instructions. If you are concerned you are not registered, please contact Amber Kastler. Where does my registration fee go? Your registration fees help pay for the necessary permits, police support, runners services, supplies and personnel to put on the race. The Hy-Vee Half & 5K is nonprofit and all extra proceeds will be donated to JDRF. Does the Hy-Vee Half & 5K limit the number of runners in each race? No, not at this time. The more the merrier! What do I do if I cannot participate once I have registered? No refunds on entry fees or transferring of race numbers. Runners not wearing the correct race number will be disqualified and asked to not enter the Hy-Vee Half & 5K in the future. What is the location and time of packet pickup? Thursday, March 29 th 12-5 pm Friday, March 30 th 12-7 pm Hy-Vee 115 S 29 th Street Fort Dodge, IA There is no packet pickup for the half marathon or 5K on race day. If you are unable to pick up your packet on Thursday or Friday, please contact Amber Kastler to make arrangements. How can I find my race number assignment prior to packet pickup? All entrants assigned race number will be available by contacting Amber Kastler. Can someone else pickup my packet? Yes, make sure whomever picks up your packet has your permission to pick up your packet. No packets will be mailed prior to or after the race. Can I change my race distance? Yes. This change can be done up to one week prior to the race. Please contact Amber Kastler for assistance. I'm injured and cannot run the Hy-Vee Half, will there be a refund? There are no refunds for the Hy-Vee Half & 5K, your entry fee will appropriately be used to maintain the race for next year or donated to JDRF. The volunteer race committee is committed to keeping this race non-profit and a joy for runners to run every year. While we understand that not all runners will be able to attend the race, your entry fee will be used effectively for future races. P a g e 4

5 Can I give my race number and chip to another runner? No, do not transfer race numbers. Any runner with the wrong race number will be disqualified and runners involved will be asked to not participant again at the Hy-Vee Half & 5K. Changing race numbers can create unintended award and medical problems. Additionally, bandits are not allowed in this race - permits, police fees, organizational costs, etc are reserved only for those who registered. Are bikes, rollers blades or baby joggers allowed on the course? No early starts, bikes, baby joggers, dogs, roller blades are permitted for safety purposes. Headphones or electronic listening devices are permitted but discouraged for the safety of yourself and other runners. What is the start time and location? Half marathon starts near Hy-Vee at 9:00am, 115 S 29th Street, Fort Dodge, Iowa. 5 kilometer starts at 9:30 a.m. at Kennedy Park, 1415 Kenned Park, Fort Dodge, IA. Kids runs start at 12 p.m. at Kennedy Park. I need a hotel room Friday night. Are there any specials available to participating runners? (See Below for more options) Country Inn & Suites is offering a reduced rate for participants. Half marathon parking is available at Kennedy Park, 1415 Nelson Ave, Fort Dodge, IA Will there be a shuttle for the half marathon runners? Yes, we will be shuttling people TO Hy-Vee FROM KENNEDY to the start line of the half marathon. Please ask for more information on the shuttle at packet pickup or contact Amber Kastler (akastler@hy-vee.com). Is there gear bag check-in for the half marathon? Clothing will be transported to the finish and claimed near the finish area. Hy-Vee Half and 5K is not responsible for lost items. Half marathon clothing bags can be provided and can be dropped off near the start area. Please ensure your gear bag is easily identifiable by you with your name and contact information attached to bag. Are there bathrooms near the half marathon and 5k start? Yes. There will also be Port-a-John s available throughout both courses. Please look at the course map for locations. Are there water stations available for the half marathon and 5K? Yes. There will be water stations available for the 5K and in addition to water stations there will be Powerade/Gatorade available for the half marathon. Please look at the course map for locations. How can I reunite with family, friends and other runners at the end of the half marathon? The easiest way to find your family and friends after the race is to have a plan beforehand. Half marathon runners after finishing will be directed to the finishers area to receive their finisher medal, water, sports drink and their clothing bags. Please refrain from lingering in this area as we do not want this area to become too congested or increase the risk of stolen belongings. How will I receive my half marathon finishers medal? You must finish in under 3 1/2 hours. Your medal will be presented to you after crossing the finish line. P a g e 5

6 How will I find my official time? Official and full results will posted online as soon as possible. If I won a age division award, how do I get it? Half marathon and 5 Kilometer age division awards presented at an awards ceremony following the race or should the recipient be unable to attend the awards ceremony his/her award can be picked up at the Fort Dodge Hy-Vee store. What will be the date of the Hy-Vee Half & 5K in 2013? The Hy-Vee Half & 5K will traditionally be the last Saturday in the month of March. In 2013 it will be March 30.
