3 WELCOME ATHLETES! We are excited to bring you the Life Time Tri San Diego, home of the modern triathlon! A laidback paradise with a blossoming craft industry that brings you a taste of south of the border mixed with the fresh, entrepreneurial relish which keeps us California Dreamin. This historic SoCal event, formerly known as the Esprit de She (and She Rox before that) has seen much progress since its inception as an all-women triathlon yet still offers a fairly unchanged course that meanders through stunning Mission Bay. The eighth and final event of the 2017 Life Time Tri Series, San Diego features both a Sprint & SuperSprint distance and is the only race in the Series which allows athletes to qualify with a Sprint distance for the Life Time Tri Series Championship in 2018! New this year is the advent of the Mixed Relays division, where teams comprised of four competitors will each complete the SuperSprint course. Mixed Relays, while previously unconventional to a historically individual event, have been included in the program for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. It is just one more way in which Life Time Tri San Diego is making waves for the sport and cultivating a new generation of athletes. This course provides athletes and spectators with phenomenal views of the Bay and the perfect opportunity to watch the race unfold as they compete throughout the day. Cruise through the Finish and get ready to celebrate with a taste of San Diego with local favorites, Konito s Café & Second Chance Beer Co.! As we get closer to race day be sure to take a moment to read through this year s Athlete Guide for all your important race weekend information that is sure to set you up for a successful race. Be sure to rest up, prepare all your gear and get ready to race with all your friends and family! We are thrilled to back in Southern California and look forward to providing you with an unforgettable experience. Please remember to take a moment to thank all the fantastic volunteers with whom this race would not be possible. With sincere appreciation, The Life Time Tri San Diego Crew 3

8 MIXED RELAYS - NEW! Mixed Relay teams are comprised of four competitors. Each competitor will complete a SuperSprint triathlon course. Two team members will start in wave #1 and complete the SuperSprint triathlon course (swim, bike, run), then tag the next team member who will then complete the SuperSprint course and continue into to the Finish Line. In this particular event, a single Mixed Relay team of four is broken down into two sub-teams. Timing begins when the first team member begins the swim, and ends when the last team member crosses the finish line. Timing results for each team member will be combined to form one Team timing result. Three different team categories available: Traditional Mixed Relay: Two Men, Two Women (Racing: Female, Male, Female, Male) All Male: 4 Men All Female: 4 Women RACE ROUTE & KEY INSTRUCTIONS Two Mixed Relay participants will start simultaneously, each in Swim Wave 1 (Coed teams: one of each gender). The first two participants to finish the SuperSprint course will NOT proceed to the Finish Line. Instead, toward the end of their respective run course, they will veer to the right (before entering the Finish Chute) and enter the Mixed Relay pen, near the Swim Start by the southern dock. There will be a timing mat near the end of the run course, just before the Mixed Relay pen (near the Swim Start), which will record the first two teammates run splits. Be sure to cross that timing mat for accurate scoring. Once the first two mixed participants finish their course, they will pass their timing chip to the next mixed relay participant of their same sex in the Mixed Relay pen at Swim Start. The third and fourth participants will then join the time trial (SuperSprint course wave starts) line and complete their swim course. Participants #3 and 4 will race independent of each other (no need to wait for the other). When participants #3 and 4 finish their swim, bike and run, they continue to the Finish Line chute. Once all four mixed relay participants are across the Finish line, cumulative times from both chips will be combined into a single team score. AWARDS Awards will be issued for the top three teams in each category: Traditional Mixed Relay, All Male, and All Female. DRAFTING Although traditional Mixed Relay is a draft legal event, as with all other events on race day, Life Time Tri will be following NO DRAFTING policy for this event. 8

If you are a USAT annual member you must present your current member card, otherwise you will be required to pay a $15 single-event licensing fee. What will be included in the race packets? Race packets will include the following: Race numbers for your bike and helmet; swim cap; race information; and rules and sponsor-related materials. You will also pick up your T-shirt and timing chip at the expo along with your packet. SWIM COURSE What is the water temperature on race morning? The water temperature will be checked by USAT officials on race morning and will be given during pre-race announcements. What are the rules for requesting assistance from lifeguards? If you need to rest during the swim, you may hold onto the rescue tubes and safety boats used by lifeguards along the swim course. However, you will be disqualified if you use one of these devices to assist yourself in forward progress. Which equipment is needed for the swim? Swim cap (provided in the race packet), goggles or mask (optional) and swimsuit or tri suit. Wetsuits are legal under USAT rules if the water temperature is 78 degrees or lower. When the 24

25 water temperature is degrees, you may wear a wetsuit, but you will be ineligible for age group awards. No wetsuits are allowed when the water temperature is 84 degrees or higher. Fins and other propulsion devices are not allowed. BIKE COURSE What equipment is mandatory for the bike section? A bike and a bike helmet are required. Your bike must be in good working condition with your bike race number properly attached. Your bike helmet must be ANSI- or SNELL- certified, and it must have your number sticker properly attached. We recommend having your bicycle checked through a reputable bike shop prior to the event. We also advise to bring along all necessary equipment for changing a flat tire or making minor adjustments to your bike. Will drafting be allowed? No. You must stay three bike lengths behind the rider in front of you. When passing, you need to complete the pass within 15 seconds. If you are being passed, you must drop back three bike lengths from the person passing you. Riding side by side within two meters of a rider is illegal. If you are caught drafting, you will be penalized. See race rules for more information. Are you allowed to use a mountain bike? Yes. You may use a mountain bike, hybrid/city bike, road bike, single-speed bike, or triathlon bike. No motorized bikes, tandems, fixed-gear bikes, or recumbent bikes are allowed. Fairings (windshields) are not allowed. RUN COURSE How many aid stations will be on the run? Aid stations will be approximately every mile on the run course. What mandatory equipment do I need for the run? It is required to have your race number and timing chip during the run. Race numbers are to be attached on the front of your body and the timing chip must be securely strapped to your left ankle. Are headphones and/or mobile phones allowed when racing? Headphones, headsets, ipod, mp3 players, or personal audio devices, etc. are not to be carried or worn at any time during the race. Telephones may be carried, but must be stored out of sight, and in the off position. A participant may only use the phone when dismounted, off course, and not making forward progress. 25

26 TRANSITION What is transition? The transition area is a common area where participants rack their bike, run, and swim gear before and during the race. It is also your assigned spot where you will transition from swim to bike and bike to run. Relay teams have a designated region in transition where they exchange their timing chip strap from swimmer to cyclist and cyclist to runner. Who is allowed in the transition? Only race participants (with attached bike race number), transition volunteers, and race officials are allowed inside transition. Family members and friends are unable to access this secured facility. What time does transition open and close in the morning? Transition opens at 5:00 a.m. and closes at 6:45 a.m. TIMING CHIPS How does chip timing work? A computer chip encoded with the athlete s name, race number and wave start is attached to a strap that the athlete must wear SECURELY around their left ankle. Scanners located on mats positioned near transition (Swim Start/Finish; Bike Start/Finish; Bike Turnarounds; Run Start; Run Turnarounds and Finish) reads the chips and records the time as each athlete steps on the mat. For this reason, athletes much be careful to step/ride near the mats along the course. In addition, an athlete who starts any wave after the first swim wave begins, must take care not to step on a mat in or around the transition area accidentally as he/she waits for their wave to begin. The chips go live after Saturday s mandatory Packet Pick Up and will record every instance an athlete steps on a mat; if such a time is recorded that is earlier than an athlete s scheduled wave, accidentally or intentionally, the chip will automatically disqualify them. May I wear the chip wherever I want as long as the chip is with me? No. The strap with the timing chip must be worn on the left ankle. 26

27 If I lose my chip, will I be timed for the race and where can I get another chip? You must have a chip to participate. If you lose your chip before the race starts, see race personnel at the Swim Start to rent a replacement chip. Each timing chip is very valuable. Replacement cost in case of loss is the athlete s responsibility and is $ What do I do with my timing chip if I decide to stop racing? Please turn all timing chips into race personnel. If you end up picking up your packet and timing chip Saturday but do not race Sunday please mail you chip to: Race Place Events, 9117 E Via Montonya Scottsdale, AZ
