New Board Update HSP Staff Update HSP Partners Forum HSP Induction for New Staff in Partner Organisations This Girl Can in Herts Week Primary School PE and Sport Conference County-Wide Local Delivery Pilot Coach Education Week Round-Up Diary Dates New Board Update Our new Board has now been in place for almost 8 months and as well as coming to terms with an evolving relationship with Sport England and changes to external funding streams, Board members have been working hard to ensure that the Partnership is fully compliant with the recently published UK Code For Sports Governance. Members represent a range of key partner organisations and bring with them a wealth of experience and expertise from sporting and business backgrounds. The Board is currently involved in setting the Partnership s strategic direction for the next four years and is fully committed to ensuring that HSP continues as a high performing County Sports Partnership that meets with the needs and aspirations of its wide range of stakeholders. Our current Strategic Plan runs to 2017, and much has changed in the intervening four years since it was adopted. As such, it is imperative that any new Strategic Plan reflects key national and local priorities and meets with the support of our stakeholders. Following consultation, it is anticipated that the new Plan will be launched at our Annual General Meeting in June

HSP Staff Update Changes to external funding streams, and the requirements of funders, principally Sport England, coupled with the completion of a number of external contracts and commissions has necessitated a review of the Partnership s staff structure. This will take effect from the 1 st April 2017 and has resulted in a number of long serving and valued members of staff moving on to pastures new. We wish them all well as they pursue a range of other opportunities and they all move on with our sincere thanks for their efforts on behalf of the Partnership, and with our best wishes for the future. 3. HSP Partners Forum The most recent HSP Partners Forum was held at the University of Hertfordshire on Monday 20th March. Around fifty individuals from numerous organisations involved in Sport and Physical Activity programmes and policy making in Hertfordshire attended the Forum. The focus was to bring to life Sport England s insight pack: Tackling Inactivity: Bringing the Design Principles to life in your work. A lively session with lots of discussion followed, considering how the design principles can be considered and applied effectively to engage inactive people in physical activity. The forum was led by Dr Angel Chater from the Centre for Health, Wellbeing and Behaviour Change at the University of Bedfordshire and HSP s Strategic Lead for Health, Fiona Deans. Follow on workshops will follow in May that will explore ways of implementing some of these behaviour change theories. Information about the workshops will follow. 3 5. This Girl Can in Herts Week 2017 Sport England s national This Girl Can campaign was relaunched in early February with social media activity and billboard posters. A further televised advertising campaign has been screening since 24th February. The target age group has been changed to women and girls aged 14-60, with a focus on confidence, resilience and belonging. To support the campaign in Hertfordshire, we have been awarded funding from Sport England to provide some local activation. We will be holding our 3 rd This Girl Can in Herts Week from Saturday 3 rd to Sunday 11 th June. This will take the form of an extensive promotional and communications campaign to raise awareness of all the activities featured in the programme. The week will involve a wide range of activities, workshops, events and coaching sessions across the county that will aim to encourage continued participation. We ll work in partnership with local district and borough councils and numerous other partners. We were delighted to partner with the Hertfordshire Mavericks Netball Super League team to launch our campaign at their first home match on Friday 17th February at the Hertfordshire Sports Village. Around 50 guests enjoyed some inspirational stories and the exciting match; we look forward to working with some of them over the coming months. Project contact: Lucy Carey: l.m.carey@herts.ac.uk / Primary School PE and Sport Conference The 4 th Annual Hertfordshire Primary Schools PE and School Sport Conference was held at the University of Hertfordshire in late January. It was opened by two prestigious keynote speakers, Baroness Sue Campbell, Chair of the Youth Sports Trust and Elaine Wyllie of the Daily Mile Foundation. Following the keynote addresses, the 250 delegates attended a wide choice of workshops designed to help primary schools deliver high quality PE and School Sport. 30 external commercial and sporting partners exhibited in the lunchtime marketplace. The Hertfordshire Guide to High Quality Primary PE, Physical Activity and School Sport, produced in consultation with the Primary Head Teacher Advocates Group, was launched at the conference. Schools were asked to pledge to introduce the Daily Mile for their pupils and the University of Hertfordshire s Midday Mile for staff was also launched. County-Wide Local Delivery Pilot Following recent announcements by Sport England, and attendance at Sport England workshops set up so that potential bidders can better understand the opportunity for applying to operate a pilot project in Hertfordshire, we have agreed to take a county-wide approach to securing this funding for Hertfordshire. Led by Public Health Hertfordshire, the Herts Sports Partnership, and the 10 District and Borough Councils (in the guise of HACO - Hertfordshire Association of Cultural Officers) discussions have been held with a wide range of groups/organisations to explain and garner support for our proposals. Our Local Delivery Pilot funding bid will take a whole systems approach to supporting people with long term conditions to self-manage and improve their health and quality of life by being more physically active: Focus on reducing avoidable disability Clinicians to identify key current barriers and work with us to solve them General & specific programmes Physical Activity totally embedded in the care pathway To highlight the Sport England opportunity and to share our proposals we organised a workshop at the University of Hertfordshire on Tuesday 21st February That session was attended by some 64 representatives of over 40 different organisations (including all 10 District/Borough Councils) from across Hertfordshire. Feedback from the event has been positive, and there would appear to be a real appetite to support a county-wide, whole system approach bid, as outlined. Together with colleagues in Public Health Hertfordshire, and our local government representatives, we feel that we have sufficient information to progress a Stage 1 application by the March 31st submission deadline. Should we be successful in progressing to Stage 2, there will be an opportunity to stage district level workshops/events in partnership with HACO colleagues to discuss how local organisations may add value to the proposed project and to ensure that any proposals are a local fit. 5 8. Coach Education Week Round-Up Herts Coach Education Week 2017 was another resounding success and a major contribution to raising coaching standards in Hertfordshire. More than 1,000 people attended a wide range of courses and workshops most of which were fully booked. This was the 9 th week of its kind, a flagship high-profile event for HSP that has a significant impact on the quality and scope of sports coaching and workforce development in the county. Project contact: Chris Samways; c.samways@herts.ac.uk or Kelly Fagan k.fagan@herts.ac.uk / parkrun Celebration Over 300 parkrun Volunteers recently gathered at the Weston Auditorium at the University of Hertfordshire, to hear about the origins of the worldwide parkrun movement, from its founder Paul Sinton-Hewitt CBE. The event, organised by the Herts Sports Partnership, in association with parkrun UK celebrated the outstanding contribution made to the parkrun movement in Hertfordshire by over 800 registered volunteers. Each week, over 200 of these get together at 11 locations across the county so that some 2,000+ runners can enjoy their weekly timed, free 5k run around some of Hertfordshire s outstanding parkland and countryside settings. We look forward to the continued growth of Parkrun in Hertfordshire, and would like to express our sincere thanks to Hertfordshire County Council and our 10 District and Borough Councils for the outstanding support that they have given this initiative.
