NSWMA COMMITTEE 2016/2017 Position Name Phone President Mark Johnston Vice President Audrey Thompson Hon. Secretary Stuart Paterson Treasurer Anatoly Kirievsky Registrar Gabi Watts Records Peter Murray Uniforms Belinda Wescott Website Donna Hiscox Editor Margaret Walker Field Rep Stuart Gyngell Track Rep Kathleen Cook The masters state titles have just concluded, virtually bringing to an end the summer season for 2016/2017. Despite inclement weather there was a good turnout, I barely managed a parking spot in Carter St on Saturday. For the first time we offered some live streaming of track events and I d especially like to thank Amanda Coombe for generously giving up her time to provide excellent commentary for the sprints. A number of members will be continuing on to Daegu, South Korea for the World Indoor Championships and best of luck to those going. No doubt some will continue to train for the AMA Nationals to be held in June. The NSWMA annual presentation dinner was held on Saturday 4th March at Dooleys Silverwater Club. Fifty five people booked for this event. This was an experiment to gauge if holding the event during the masters state titles would work. We also experimented in dispensing with the slide show of nominees but feedback from members indicated this was not a success. Also some nominees were omitted from the announcements for which we sincerely apologise. See elsewhere in this newsletter for a full list of nominees and winners. Masters were included once again in the Sydney Track Classic, which is excellent news, however there The Presidential Address 3 were communication problems with ANSW which resulted in the committee only being advised officially about the event the day before entries closed. I expect next year will be better organised. There have been some delays in updating our website as a result of Donna Hiscox taking over from Janie Carter as website and publicity coordinator. I d like to thank Janie for her excellent work over the past couple of years and expect Donna will soon have the website up to date. As part of the One Sport initiative we are now part of a joint working party with Athletics NSW and Little Athletics NSW investigating ways and means of working more closely and harmoniously together. This will be a three to four year process and the committee will provide feedback as and when the various milestones are achieved. As always the committee likes to get members feedback on issues and the various things we trial. You can do this via our Facebook page or directly via to any committee member or even by attending the AGM in June. Especially valuable is feedback on the revamped ANSW summer season, the state titles, timing of the awards event and live streaming. Mark
NSW Masters Championships SOPAC 4-5 March 2017 The NSW Masters Championships were held at Sydney Olympic Park, 4-5 March. Whether it was the fallout from Perth, the saturated skies, or those Masters who had competed in the NSW State Championships having a rest, numbers were down in some age groups. However, in the face of Saturday s rolling downpours Masters camaraderie prevailed and I can honestly say I didn t speak to a single miserable person, just a lot of wet ones. At least the weather reports were accurate and we were able to come prepared. Live streaming was a new feature this year accessed through NSW Masters Athletics Facebook page. Observant athletes may have noticed the camera provided by ANSW in the top of the stand above the southern corner of Competitian Management (where Stuart Gyngell sat dry all day with a wonderful view of the track - half his luck). The microphone was a metre below the camera on the concrete step. Thanks to Mark Johnston, Peter Murray and Amanda Coombe for organising and staffing it. Amanda s sports commentary received many compliments. And where would we be without our officials? A huge thank you to the small army of staff who stood out in the rain for two days with nothing but helpful advice on their lips and smiles on their faces. Full results can be found at: Results.pdf I will take a few lines to comment on what I saw. Saturday proved a busy day for sprinters. Contrary to custom 100m and 200m were both held on Saturday within three hours of each other but there were, nevertheless, some very quick performances in the men. Sub 12 second times in the 100m were run by M30 Billy Splidas, 11.51, M35 Piyush Kumar, 11.72, and M40 Ashley McMahon, The fastest 200m of the day was run by Jay Stone from Armidale at Jay ran at Country Championships on page 12. Notable clashes in the women s sprints commenced in the W35 with Natasha Hughes and Annika Milne swapping first and second in the 100m and 200m respectively. W40 Monique Perry and Nicole Robinson battled it out for first and second in the same races, and in the W45 200m Lenore Lambert and Janelle Delaney shared Jackie Bezuidenhout and Gianna Mogentale ran a very exciting 100m for first and second, which brings me to my own age group, 4 W55, where times were a second slower than normal in some cases - showing the difference a strong head makes: -3.8 in the 100m and -3.6 in the 200m. The driving rain proved too much for competitors in the long hurdles. The women competitors were reduced to two, Cassie Dege. who ran a courageous 400m hurdles by herself, and Robyn Suttor in the 300m with the men. The 800m was similarly afflicted, most competitors finishing the two laps completely saturated. From my eclectic selection of long jumpers I watched David Kennedy of Woolgoolga leaped an excellent 4.73m to win the M60 long jump. The women s W30 long jump was won by jitka Hiscox who leapt 5.28m. This spurred me on to look at all the long jump results noting that Liz Lobb, Jaime Lovell, Annika Milne, Leah Kennedy, Alice Bohdan and Jennifer Bishop all jumped further than 4m, which I would like to do one day when I get around to practising. (Note from last issue, I haven t done so yet.) I arrived on Sunday morning in time to watch Cheryl Webb win the W m walk in 26:30:93 having won the NSW Open in 25:05.57 the week before. The walks continue to be very popular with Masters. My photos of the event are on NSWMA Facebook. The M30 high jump was won by Sam Raymond of NSWMA whom I watched leap 1.75m. Laurie Downing M50, also from Masters, cleared 1.55m which was the same height cleared by Jitka Hiscox in the W30. I didn t watch the triple jump but note these women jumped over 9m; Jaime Lovell W , Alice Bohdan W m, Jennifer Bishop W The best men s were: Michael Laws M , Stuart Guthrie M , David Kellet M , Andrew Cassin M I didn t see many throws. However, looking at the results, Andrew Kohlrusch threw a magnificent 43.24m in the javelin, Gavin Murray, in shot and for weight, Martin Harland for discus and for hammer. These were the best male throws of the weekend. (I m not age grading them. I m simply looking at the wow factor.) The furthest distances for the women were: Shot and javelin, Jitka Hiscox, and respectively, discus, Sharyn Dickson, 37.03, and hammer Melissa Holahan, who also won weight throw at Editor
Vale Janet Munro 1 July March 2017 From top: Natasha Hughes, Julie Peksis, Monique Perry wins the W40 100m M Walker Janet passed away from a stroke on the 9th March, and will be very sorely missed in the NSW and the Australian athletics officiating community. She always had a positive attitude that rubbed off onto the many officials she mentored throughout her twenty years of officiating athletics events across the state, and officiated at a high level herself at National and International athletics events. 5
NSWMA Awards 4 March 2017 In determining the awards the committee use the following methods. For Best at Country & State awards we use a points based system where an athlete is awarded 10 points for a first place, 9 for a second place etc. For the discipline awards we take into account primarily wins at state, national and world level together with records set at any of those levels. Clearly a win or record at world level is judged more significant than at national or state level. Where two or more athletes appear to have roughly equal achievements age-graded percentage tables and/ or head to head results, if applicable, are used to determine a winner. AWARD RESULTS BASED ON PERFORMANCES IN 2016 President s Award: Stuart Gyngell Stuart is a long-time member of NSW Masters Athletics and has been a champion athlete since his youth. He wins this award for his otustanding advocacy for the throws events and for his efforts in winning the Australian (AMA) Winter Throws Championships for NSW. 11 Club Championships, SOPAC 17/18 December 2016 The second Club Championships for 2016 appeared down on numbers from the first which were held in January. ANSW extended the closing date for entries by two days to encourage those distracted by the frantic bustle that brings the year to its close to make up their minds in favour of athletics. masters athletes from seventeen clubs and men from twenty-eight battled it out through heat one day and cold the next. As one of those still standing at the end of competitian, I should add that, rugged up and shivering as we were and the evening coming on fast, the atmosphere of Christmas in July nevertheless prevailed and everyone was becoming quite festive and not competitive at all. 15 The Hybrid Athlete Run/Jump/Throw, Measure/Record/Retrieve James Constantine When someone who loves athletics thinks about their sport, athletes and figures come to mind. For me, I think of the Usain Bolts, the Hicham El Guerroujs, the Mike Powells and the Jan Železnýs. I know the numbers 9.58 seconds, 3 minutes seconds, 8.95 metres, and metres that they have achieved. But what I haven t thought about before late last year was where these numbers come from. Who is responsible for letting us marvel at these phenomenally talented people through the performances that they achieve? And what would the sport be without the people who aren t seen? Let s now look at athletics at a slightly more local level last weekend s NSW Masters Championships. The person who called your name, who looked at your take-off foot on the board, who raked and smoothed the pit, who measured your distance and who recorded the distance down she wasn t wearing a light blue shirt for the whole weekend. In fact, there s a chance she was in the lane next to you in the 60-metre dash, walked into the hammer circle immediately after you walked out, or was shouting encouragement for you at any point in time during the duration of the weekend. I caught up with this woman, Maria Cimino from UTS Norths, to have a chat about why she takes this approach to athletics and how it s benefited her experience of both NSW Master s and Athletics New South Wale s competitions over the previous Summer season. When and how did you get involved with athletics? I used to do athletics in high school and loved it. At age 41, I met a friend who was doing athletics, which motivated me to stop playing softball and to take up athletics again. What has been your favourite aspect of this weekend s NSW Masters Championships competition? Being able to compete and officiate. Officiating helps me take my mind off my next event and gives me the satisfaction that competitors have the best help when competing. Officials Coordinator, Athletics NSW 15 What prompted you to start officiating can you explain your journey and the official/competitor hybrid that you are? As I used to love umpiring in softball, I have wanted to officiate in athletics for quite some time. Originally, you would have to attend a course in the evening and in a location, which was hard to get to in time. The course is now online, so I was able to complete the modules, and now I am officiating and learning. Do you believe that having access to both sides of the sport has enhanced your athletics experience? How? Yes, I believe it has, I have a better understand of rules and regulations, which will help me achieve my goals as a competitor and as an official. What are your goals for you developing as both an athlete and as an official in the future? Keep training in both, become a better-quality athlete and to move up into the ranks of officiating. I would love to one day officiate at the Commonwealth Games. If you were to pass on a message to NSW Masters athletes regarding becoming involved in officiating, what would that be? Just join and help. Having more officials will help meets/championships run smoother and start/finish on time which is a satisfying feeling. 16 World Male Sprint Performances Amanda Coombe A Top: Peter Crombie winning the M in Perth2016 Right: Peter with Reg Austin World Championship often brings out the best of the best and Perth was no exception, with many fine displays of athlete ability across all age groups. I guess that is the beauty of age graded tables, they offer a means to compare our performances as we age regardless of where we finish. Another way that we can measure success is by world records and others would argue that the number of medals represents longevity of success in our sport. For those readers who love to pontificate over results a tally of outdoor world men s sprint individual and relay medals has been prepared. Peter Crombie AUS 47 Stephen Peters UK 47 Reg Austin AUS 39 Guido Mueller GER 22 Steve Robbins USA 21 Bill Collins USA 21 What is apparent is that Australia s sprint legend, the late Reg Austin, has to date won more 100m and 200m sprint medals than any other male in history, 11 in the 100m and 12 in the 200m Male WMA of the Year Peter Crombie has won more 400m medals than any other male with 9. Peter Crombie has also won more world relay medals in both the 4x100m and 4x400m than any other male athlete in history with 22, ahead of Britain s 16 Graeme Dahl Amanda Coombe Stephen Peters with 19. Australia s Peter Crombie and Stephen Peters both have 47 world medals, an incredible feat of performance and longevity in anyone s language. Peter Crombie, known to many in the US as a regular competitor at the US Championships, won all 5 gold sprint medals on offer at the recent World Championships in Perth, Australia, 100m, 200m, 400m, 4x100m and 4x400m relays. He was the only person at this meet to achieve that level of performance. It is worth noting that this incredible feat has only been achieved 7 times in the history of WMA Championships since Stephen Peters is the only male athlete to achieve this in sprints and relays four times, in 2003, 2005, 2009 and Three times WMA Male Athlete of the Year, Germany s Guido Mueller, has done this twice, once in 2009 and also in As for triple individual gold, apart from those mentioned above, Bill Collins has achieved this twice in 2001 and 2007, Reg Austin in 1987 and 1991, Steve Robbins in 1995 and Stephen Peters in It appears if you have Stephen or Peter(s) in your name it helps! It is apparent that these 6 men represent the cream of World Masters sprinting over many decades and it will be interesting to see how they add to their tallies in the coming years and who is able to break world records as they move into a new age group.
I got to do a couple of days in the commentary box a new experience for me. Amanda Kip Hobson A huge congratulations to Mary Thomas who, since Perth 2016, has added a further three gold and three silver medals to her wonderful collection of 41 from 17 World Masters Athletics Championships. That is 16 gold, 15 silver and 10 bronze. For the first time, these included gold in the hammer throw and discus in which Mary had previously only placed. She is now the proud possessor of gold medals in every one of her six throwing events. Mary, who won six NSW Open Javelin titles between 1965 and 1982, has won or medalled in javelin in 16 out of 17 WMA Championships. In the 17th she came fourth after pulling a hamstring.
