Saturday - Hurdlestone Challenge An 8 mile hike (approx) with activity bases along the way. It is hoped that these will include: Obstacle course Archery First Aid Map & Compass Work Knots Aerial Runway Rifle Shooting A Water Challenge Etc.. Sunday - Fun Day For All A day to enjoy and have a go at: Games Various Sports Crafts and Other Activities

Kit check etc. for all team participants in the main marquee. As announced: All Service Crew members to attend briefing session in the small marquee. 3 THE HURDLESTONE CHALLENGE WEEKEND RULES The following rules must be observed:- 1. All participants are to follow the Scouting and Guiding values, which includes no cheating during the Challenge. 2. All participants of the Hurdlestone Challenge must be members of the Scout Association and Girlguiding aged from 10 years old and aged no more than 14½ on 1 August of the Challenge year, therefore their date of birth should be no earlier than 1 st February Teams must consist of at least four and no more than six members. If numbers are reduced to fewer than four at any point in the Challenge, then they must accompany another team while walking but continue to participate in bases as separate teams. 4. Team members wishing to retire, must do so at a base, unless injured. 5. All items on the kit list for the Challenge MUST be carried or worn at all times during the Challenge. The Troop/Unit Neckerchief must be visibly and correctly worn. 6. Teams must walk in single file on the roads and observe the Highway and Country Codes. NO LITTER. 7. Teams must attend all activity bases and check points in the specified order. Noise levels must be kept to a minimum. Radios, personal stereos, GPS/Sat nav and mobile telephones will not be allowed by Scouts or Guides and will be confiscated if found. 8. At 5.30 p.m. the Challenge will end. Wherever a team is, it must return to the campsite, whether the course has been completed or not. 9. Adult leaders are not permitted to accompany their teams but they may visit any/all of the activity bases. 10. Drugs, alcoholic drinks & aerosol sprays are not permissible and action will be taken accordingly if found. 11. Self-catering is not permissible but dining is allowed within your own designated area or in or around one of the main marquees. 12. No dogs will be allowed on site during the weekend. 13. On display on the camp site, and previously sent to you, is a site layout plan clearly showing the extent of the field made available for our use. Other than for the purposes of gaining access to a base in the adjacent fields, by following the route shown on your map, all other areas of this field are out of bounds. Any equipment within the site boundary is not to be touched, moved or used in any way and the climbing of trees is not allowed. 14. Any games or other recreational activities will only be allowed in the large grass area outside of the main marquee as identified on the camp site plan. 15. No naked flames will be allowed on site. By naked flames we mean boilers, smoking, stoves, tilly lights, gas lamps, gas heaters and other similar items. Please check with us in advance of the event by using the following address: info@hurdlestone.org.uk Spot checks will be carried out throughout the weekend by marshals. Points will be deducted if the above rules are not adhered to and, if appropriate, disqualification of the whole team which could result in you being sent home.

4 HOW TO BOOK FOR THE HURDLESTONE CHALLENGE WEEKEND The attached Leaders Questionnaire must be completed along with the T-shirt order form and the Entry Form. Send them together with your fee or non-refundable deposit and T-shirt money, to the Booking Secretary BY 28 FEBRUARY If you have supplied an address we will send further documents to that address, otherwise enclose an A4 self-addressed stamped envelope complete with adequate postage. Please note that no late T-shirt orders will be accepted. HOW MUCH IS THE WEEKEND? TEAM MEMBERS. The inclusive fee is each. This includes food, campsite fees, all entertainment, the Hurdlestone Challenge, the Sunday Fun Day, camp badge and certificate. LEADERS. The inclusive fee is each. This includes food, campsite fees and camp badge but does not include Sunday activities. SERVICE CREW. The inclusive fee is each. This includes food, campsite fees and camp badge. To apply to be a Service Crew member you MUST be at least 14 years of age AND either a member of the Explorer Scouts, Network or an Adult Leader in Scouting or a member of the Senior Section in Girlguiding; and the minimum age for sleeping in the Service Crew area will be 16 at the time of the event. This fee does not include taking part in the Sunday Fun Day activities. Service Crew applicants MUST be available from 4pm on Friday 23 June to 6pm on Sunday 25 June unless special permission has been obtained from the Committee. NON PARTICIPATING CHILDREN. By special arrangement only. Please contact the Booking Secretary prior to making any arrangements for other children to attend. A non-refundable deposit of per head for Challenge participants, per head for leaders and service crew and 10 per head for base leaders attending the weekend, is required with each Entry Form, with the balance payable BY 30 APRIL If the balance is not received by this date your booking will be cancelled and the nonrefundable deposit will be retained by us. MAKE CHEQUES PAYABLE TO:- HURDLESTONE CHALLENGE LEADERS, PLEASE NOTE 1. Participants are still able to join in the fun if their Unit/Troop Leader is unable to attend. In these circumstances the named adult camper will be responsible for them for the entire weekend. 2. Entries of teams of under four members will not be accepted. Mixed teams can be arranged by you and entered in the normal way. 3. This event is gaining in popularity, to avoid disappointment, book early and do not miss any of the deadlines. 4. Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis until all team places and Service Crew places have been filled, or the closing date of 28 February 2017 has passed.

5 VENUE The Football Field, Higher Humber Farm, Bishopsteignton. (Map Ref ). The postcode for the farm is TQ14 9TD. Take the A380 (Exeter/Torquay Road), turning to TEIGNMOUTH at ASHCOMBE CROSS. Proceed to the Teignmouth Golf Course and then turn right, follow the signs for the campsite. If travelling from Kingsteignton/Newton Abbot arrive via Humber Lane and leave by an alternative route as this will be made a ONE WAY ONLY road during the weekend. THE WEEKEND Your weekend commences immediately after the tents are pitched and registration has finished. Friday evening offers a light snack of soup and a roll with the opportunity for teams and their unit leaders to study the route. There will be some entertainment in the marquee - if time permits - once troops and units are happy that their teams are fully prepared for the next day s challenge. WHAT IS THE CHALLENGE? An exciting, action packed day for members of the Scout and Guide Association (aged up to 14½ by 1 st August of the Challenge year), working in teams of 4 to 6 members. Teams set off for the day and move around the course. For safety reasons, they are required to carry certain items of kit. They stop at activity bases on the way to gain points towards the HURDLESTONE CHALLENGE TROPHY. There are other nonactivity bases around the course where other points may be gained. The HURDLESTONE CHALLENGE TROPHY will be presented to the team with the highest points scored during the day. Certificates are also given for the team gaining the most points scored at each activity base. No team will receive more than one award. Also, each participant will receive a badge and certificate, just for taking part in the Challenge. We promise an exciting, fun-filled day. WHAT IS SCRUTINEERING? Scrutineering is carried out on each team on the Friday night after registration in the main marquee. We will inspect your kit and check that you have all the recommended items to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable Hurdlestone Challenge. We will also test that all participants know their Country Code and are able to read a map! WHAT IS THE SUNDAY FUN DAY? The Sunday Fun Day provides a day for all Challenge participants to enjoy the wide range of activities available which will include various sports, games, crafts and other activities. WHAT ELSE IS THERE? This is a greenfield site and for the enjoyment and convenience of all, the following will be provided:- All site fees covered, food and catering, toilets (Portaloo type), badge sales, Hurdlestone gift shop, first aid cover, safety vehicles, radio control and lots of fun! Hot water is also provided to leaders for provision of personal hygiene within their units - we DO NOT provide wash tents, this is down to the leaders' discretion.
