3 Manual THE CHALLENGE Your challenge, your way! Over the weekend of June 2015 we are expecting over 1,000 challengers to be taking on either 100, 50 or 25 km of the between London and our finish location Stoke Hammond. There will be a mixture of walkers, runners and joggers taking part in the event - with runners setting out first for a clear run of the route, with joggers and then walkers following close behind. walk IT Walkers will be making up the majority of the field and will be setting off after the runners have set off out onto the course. The is an ideal event for anyone - from novice trekkers, first time charity fundraisers to the harder core & keener walkers looking to set a personal best. We expect walkers will likely complete the below distances in the below time frames: 100 km in hrs (33 upper time limit) 50 km in 9-14 hrs 25 km in 4-7 hrs jog IT You can jog any distance of the challenge - if you are looking to up your fitness and set yourself a new personal best but without the pressure of making a certain finish time. We recommend that all joggers register technically as a walker but selecting our recommended start time : 100 km in hrs 50 km in 7-9 hrs 25 km in 3-5 hrs run IT Runners are participants who have specifically signed up as such. There are five potential events for the runners to be taking on; the entire 100 km ultra marathon, either half of the full course as a 50 km route, or the 1 st or 3 rd 25 km section. We expect that runners will be completing the challenge within the below time frames: 100 km under 15 hrs 50 km in 4-7 hrs 25 km under 3 hrs THE ROUTE & rest stops 0 KM - LONDON Paddington Recreation Ground 12.5 km midpoint 25 KM - HAYES Lake Farm, Country Park 37.5 km midpoint 50 km - watford Cassiobury Park, Watford 75 km midpoint 100 km - stoke hammond Stoke Hammond, Buckinghamshire 3 info@grandunionchallenge.com
4 Manual Preparing for the challenge Fundraising Your charity should be in contact within 2-3 weeks of your registration to discuss your fundraising or to send out a fundraising pack to you; however all charities do work in slightly different ways so if you are unsure about what you are meant to be doing fundraising wise, or you feel that they have been a bit slow in contacting you - please contact your charity directly! 50% of your minimum fundraising amount should be submitted to your charity 6 weeks prior to the challenge - 18 th May The charity can then verify that you have been actively fundraising for them and will be happy to confirm your place on the event (as they have to pay Action a fee of 130 for the 100km, 85 for the 50km and 40 for 25 km for services we provide in respect of your place on the event. Failure to reach this 50% target on time could result in the charity removing you from the event. The total balance of your fundraising target and any additional sums is due to be with your charity no later than 4 weeks after the event - 24 th July All fundraising monies should be given directly to your charity and not via Action. If you have an online fundraising page (JustGiving / Virgin Money Giving) you will NOT need to physically make a transfer, as the online donation site will automatically transfer your funds on a monthly basis to the charity, as you receive them. Training Whichever distance you are looking to take on - these challenges are a serious feat of endurance, stamina, and determination. You will need to train and practice whatever type you are doing (walking / jogging / running) in order to prepare your mind and body for the challenge ahead! Training walks Our specially designed training walks will help you to prepare and plan for the challenge. They are a great opportunity to try out your kit, test your walking boots and ask our expert lead walkers advice on the event itself. We offer both day time and night training walks across the year which you can join up to for just 20! London Day Walks: 18 miles of the Thames Path Trail, heading for Richmond. The fairly flat path will help you train in your kit & equipment and give you the chance to test out your fitness and being on your feet for a long distance. London Night Walks: Taking the London Thames route and setting off between 11 pm - midnight there is no better way to practice the night time walking sections of the challenge then to get out there and walk at night! Lead by our experienced guides, - the aim of the night training walk is to get your body and mind used to the slightly surreal experience of walking for a long period of time at night - when your body wants to be resting. North Downs: This walk begins in Guildford, climbing from the town via the Riverside Walk. From here you will pass in and out of the woods and through the beautiful countryside of the Surrey Hills, offering beautiful views over the Valleys to the South, before eventually reaching Denbies, Dorking. South Downs: Our particular training walk follows part of the National Park s 100 mile trail, from Clayton to Southease, traversing Ditchling Beacon and stretching over a rare large area of outstanding natural beauty. The South Downs Way is a fantastic and challenging training walks. To book onto one of our training walks visit our website: actionchallenge.com/challenges/training-days Check out our walkers & runners training guides within the participant s area of the website for our full plan on how best to prepare! 4 info@grandunionchallenge.com
5 CHALLENGE Manual On the challenge The start The 100 km challenge starts at Paddington Recreation Ground, Maida Vale, London - with the other 3 start locations being based at our rest stops on the map on page 3. The full addresses and details will be released into the participant area and again in your final event information 4 weeks prior to the challenge. At each start location there will be a large registration area, teas & coffee, an opportunity to meet some of our charity partners, baggage drop area, a warm-up zone, and of course the start line itself! All challengers will be setting out on the route in waves every 15 minutes in groups of roughly at a time. You will be expected to register at the start of the challenge, to officially sign in, collect your event pass, route maps and other items to aid you along the course. All start times will be allocated depending on your selection when you registered, the distance you are taking on and if you are running, jogging or walking. Your provisional start time will be ed 4 weeks prior to the challenge. We recommend that you arrive to register on the morning of your challenge 1 hour before your start time. The Finish All details surrounding the finish line (whichever challenge you are doing) will be released in the final event information guide. However at every finish line you will be met with a medal, glass of fizz and a big cheer! You will also receive a hot meal to help you recover, and there will be masseuses and medics on hand should you need it! We encourage your friends & family to meet you at the finish line and cheer you on - a full guide will be issued 1 month prior to the challenge detailing parking facilities for supporters (however this is not guaranteed at all finish lines). There will be a complimentary shuttle service from the finish locations to the local train station, during the hours in which the trains are running. Our event info point will also help you book taxis should you need it! Baggage Walkers: you must bring a day bag (small rucksack) - no more than litres max which you will be expected to carry with you at all times. There will be a BAG TRANSFER SERVICE at an additional cost for those who want a large / second bag transported to the finish line and this can be booked at the start, on the day. Runners: Can carry a small lightweight running backpack if they wish. In addition ALL runners will get a free baggage transfer service to their finish line. For 100 km runners ONLY this will be transported to the Half Way Rest Stop also (50 km) before then going on to the 100 km finish line. Supporters We fully encourage your friends and family to come along and to cheer you on at the start and finish lines. If you are taking part in the 100 km route then we also encourage them to meet you half way at the 50 km point. We will be releasing full supporter and parking guides closer to the challenge in the final event information and the participant area to help your supporters plan their day! RELAY TEAMS To complete the relay each member takes on a 25 km stretch of the course, passing on the baton as you go. If your team has someone who will be supporting you, picking up and dropping you off at all the various locations, then please let us know and we can offer them VIP parking and free meals as a way of thanks. Anyone can relay the 100 km challenge - as long as you are a team of 4. If you would like to change your registration to a relay team please us in to let us know. Timing On your event pass there will be a timing chip, and you will be timed throughout the course of the challenge. No later than 3 days after the challenge we will publish all finish times, along with the official photos taken from the event, which you may wish to purchase. 5 info@grandunionchallenge.com

Their jobs are to motivate, and encourage, as well as advise the control room of any new hazards that should develop along the route. SIGNAGE The total 100 km course is split into 4 stages of approximately 25 km each. Overall, the route follows the canal towpath, with only the first initial section along road. The route selection criteria take in to account safety, scenery and accessibility. Please ensure you are familiar with and adhere to both the Countryside and Highway Code. The route will be posted to the participant area as a PDF document, a GPX file, and KML file (for use on Google Earth and Google Maps). Google Map Links will also be posted so that participants can access the entire route, and you will also be handed a hard copy of the route on the morning of the challenge. The route will be clearly signed with PINK ARROWS (which are directional) and PINK RIBBONS (nondirectional - that mean you are on the right route), with WHITE GLOW STICKS also during the night time. In the outskirts of villages/towns this signage may become harder to spot, so please familiarise yourselves with the route before the, and have the Route Map with you and track your progress on it so you are aware of your assumed location.
