INDOOR AND OUTDOOR CHAMPIONS The Baylor men s 4x400-meter relay team won the indoor and outdoor national championships in 2007, marking the fourth time in school history that a relay was able to win double titles in the same season. The 2007 edition, however, used the same lineup during both the indoor and outdoor races, while the three previous occurrences had different athletes comprising the indoor and outdoor relay teams. Baylor last accomplished the feat in 2004, with Olympic Champions Jeremy Wariner and Darold Williamson. The Bears won five straight mile relay championships during the seasons, winning the 4x400-meter relay at the indoor and outdoor national meets in 1990 and 1991 and claiming the 1992 indoor title. The feat of winning both indoor and outdoor mile relay championships in the same season has only happened ten times in the 43-year history of running both indoor and outdoor national meets, with Baylor responsible for four of those occurrences. Remarkably, four of the ten repeat winners have come in the past five years as Baylor pull off the feat in 2004 and 2007, and LSU matched the Bears in 2003 and BEARS FAMILIAR WITH FAYETTEVILLE Though a road trip to Arkansas for a track and field meet is not uncommon, this season the Baylor squads will have the 426-mile route from Waco to Fayetteville committed to memory. Baylor will compete in Arkansas-hosted meets on five different occasions during the indoor season, with a return trip scheduled for the Razorback Invitational during the outdoor season. Baylor opens its indoor season with consecutive trips to Fayetteville for the Arkansas Invitational (Jan. 11) and the Arkansas Open (Jan ). After a trip to Lincoln, Neb. for the Husker Invitational, the Bears return to Fayetteville for the Tyson Invitational (Feb ). Following another trip to Lincoln for the Big 12 Indoor Championships, Baylor returns to Arkansas for the Last Chance Meet (Mar. 8) and the NCAA Indoor Championships (Mar ) WOMEN S OUTDOOR BESTS 100 METERS (11.75) Tiffany Townsend METERS (23.96) Tiffany Townsend METERS (54.61) Katrina Taylor METERS (2:09.80) Lauren Hagans 2: ,500 METERS (4:27.80) Lauren Hagans 4: ,000 METERS Renae Van Wyhe 9: ,000-METER STEEPLECHASE (10:50.25) Danielle Bradley 10: ,000 METERS (16:52.00) Renae Van Wyhe 16: ,000 METERS (16:52.00) Lyndsy Bedell 34: METER HURDLES (13.92) DeAna Carson HIGH JUMP (1.75m) Kayla Smith 1.55m LONG JUMP (6.00m) DeAna Carson 6.12m TRIPLE JUMP (12.32m) Stasia Kelly-Taylor 12.58m POLE VAULT (3.85m) Kaleigh Teel 3.85m DISCUS THROW (47.30m) Brittany Devereaux 53.35m HAMMER THROW (54.15m) Brittany Devereaux 49.58m JAVELIN THROW (43.45m) Mallory Craig 25.20m 4x100-METER RELAY (45.70) Bruce, Grace, Carr, Townsend x400-METER RELAY (3:42.00) Taylor, Grace, Townsend, Bruce 3: x800-METER RELAY Bradley, Hodges, Harlan, Jones 8:50.04 SPRINT MEDLEY RELAY Townsend, Carr, Grace, Hagans 3:48.08 DISTANCE MEDLEY RELAY Jones, Taylor, Hodges, Hagans 11: x1,600-METER RELAY Jones, Bradley, E. Boyd, J. Boyd, Betters 3:05.66 OUTDOOR DOMINANCE IN THE 4X400-METER RELAY Beginning with its first 4x400-meter relay national championship in 1985, the Baylor men s team has dominated the event like no other. The Bears have claimed nine outdoor national championships and seven indoor titles. Baylor s 16 total championships in the 4x400-meter relay rank first in collegiate history with Oklahoma and UCLA (10 titles) tied for second place. Baylor relays have earned All- America status for 28 straight seasons and have finished in the top three on 38 occasions (including indoor and outdoor). At the 2007 NCAA Championships, Baylor clocked a winning time of 3:00.04, recording the fourth-fastest time in NCAA history and breaking Baylor s 12-year-old school record. At the NCAA Championships, Baylor ran the 4x400-meter relay under 3:01 for just the 22nd time in NCAA history. The Bears are responsible for nine of those times (40.9%), while UCLA ranks second with three such races (13.6%). The Bears clocked a time under 3:02 on two occasions in 2007, a feat that has been accomplished only 75 times in NCAA history. Baylor relays have recorded 31 of those times (41.3%), while Arizona State is second in collegiate history with six such occurrences (8%). Additionally, 207 4x400-meter relay teams have run under 3:03 in NCAA history, with Baylor responsible for 67 of those times (32.4%). LSU ranks second with 14 all-time races (6.7%) under 3:03. INDOOR DOMINANCE IN THE 4X400-METER RELAY Similar to Baylor s dominance in the outdoor 4x400-meter relay, the Bears have made their mark in the indoor race as well. Baylor matched its nine outdoor national championships with seven indoor titles, with its first coming in At the 2007 NCAA Indoor Championships, Baylor clocked a winning time of 3:04.24, three-tenths slower than the school record of 3:03.96 and less than one second off the collegiate record. In fact, Baylor and Florida, the collegiate record holder, are the only schools to run under 3:04 in the indoor 4x400-meter relay. The Bears have recorded six of the 23 times under 3:05 all-time. LSU has actually run more 4x400-meter relays under 3:05 with seven to its credit. Baylor also owns 13 of the 37 relays (35.1%) that have run faster than 3:06, with second-place LSU at eight races (22.2%). Of the 85 relays to run faster than 3:07, Baylor has recorded 25 of those occurrences (29.4%), while LSU ranks second with 13 all-time races (16.3%) under 3:07. In NCAA history, there have been 171 marks under 3:08 in the 4x400-meter relay, with Baylor leading the way with 38 of those marks (22.2%), with LSU second at 24 races (14.6%). Baylor continues its dominance in its signature event on oversized tracks. The Bears have recorded one of the seven times under 3:04 on an oversized track, and own five (20.0%) of the 25 all-time marks under 3:05 for a 4x400-meter relay. Baylor has recorded nine (25.7%) of the 35all-time 4x400- meter relays under 3:06 on an oversized track, with Oklahoma in second place with four (11.4%) such races. The Bears are responsible for 11 (13.1%) of the 84 4x400-meter relays to run under 3:07, while LSU ranks second with seven marks under the 3:07 barrier. Baylor also has recorded 14 (9.7%) marks in the 4x400-meter relay of the 144 races faster than 3:08 on an oversized track. Six other schools are tied for second place at seven (4.9%), just half the number of races as Baylor. BAYLOR VS. THE WORLD With its time of 3:00.04 at the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Championships, the Baylor men s 4x400-meter relay would have run fast enough to secure a bronze medal at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka, Japan. The Bears time would be less than one second off the second place time of 2:59.18 run by the Bahamas. RETURNING ALL-AMERICANS The Baylor men s team returns four indoor and three outdoor All-Americans, including national champions LeJerald Betters, Quentin Iglehart-Summers and Jacob Norman. Trey Harts earned All-America honors in the indoor 200 meters in 2007, while J.T. Scheuerman was named All- American in the 4x400-meter relay at the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Championships. The Lady Bears also boast four indoor and three outdoor All-Americans. Erin Bedell, Lauren Hagans and Nichole Jones were members of Baylor s fifth-place indoor distance medley relay team in 2007, while Carla Grace earned All-America honors in 2006 as a member of the distance medley relay. Grace and Katrina Taylor were named All-Americans in the outdoor 4x400-meter relay in 2006, and Jones earned All-America honors in the outdoor 800 meters last spring.jones, BETTERS B12 FROSH OF THE YEAR Nichole Jones and LeJerald Betters were each selected as the Big 12 Freshmen of the Year. Jones earned the award on two occasions, earning Indoor Freshman of the Year honors after setting a Baylor and Big 12 record in the 1,000 meters in Ames, Iowa and sweeping the season awards with the Outdoor Freshman of the Year award following a record-setting performance in the 800 meters in Lincoln, Neb. Jones became the youngest indoor and outdoor champion in conference history. Betters was named the Outdoor Freshman of the Year after winning the 400 meters with a season-best time of The time marked the 12th-fastest quartermile in Baylor history. As a freshman, Betters helped the Bears to two national championships and was a four-time All-American and All-Big 12 selection.

7 YOUNG JONES MAKES HER MARK Nichole Jones had one of the most remarkable freshman seasons in Big 12 history. Jones, who graduated from high school a year early, made her mark at the Big 12 Indoor Championships, winning the 1,000 meters with a Baylor and Big 12 record of 2: By winning the event, Jones became the youngest Big 12 Indoor Champion in history, claiming the conference title more than a month shy of her 18th birthday. She also earned All-American status on the Lady Bears distance medley relay. Jones carried her momentum into the outdoor season, winning the Big 12 title in the 800 meters with a school record of 2:05.89 to become the youngest Big 12 Outdoor Champion in history. At the NCAA Championships, Jones earned All-America honors in the 800 meters and dropped the Baylor record in the event by more than one second to 2: Jones became Baylor s first-ever All-American in the outdoor 800 meters and was chosen as the consensus Big 12 Freshman of the Year. RETURNING ALL-CONFERENCE PERFORMERS The Bears return eight indoor all-conference performers and six outdoor All-Big 12 honorees. Among those returning athletes are conference champions LeJerald Betters, Trey Harts, Quentin Iglehart-Summers, Jacob Norman, J.T. Scheuerman and Courtney Thomas. The Lady Bears have nine returning athletes that have earned indoor all-conference accolades and eight returners have been named to the outdoor all-conference team. Included among those performers are Big 12 Champions Erin Bedell, Nichole Jones and Katrina Taylor. SCHOOL RECORD HOLDERS In 2007, Baylor track and field athletes set or tied 12 school records. Kaleigh Teel set two new school marks, while Brittany Devereaux set three new Baylor standards, including two on consecutive days at the Stanford Invitational. Nichole Jones accounted for two individual school records and ran the anchor leg on two additional relay school records as a freshman. In all, Baylor has 10 athletes on its roster this season that are responsible for 13 school records CROSS COUNTRY SUCCESS In 2007, the Baylor women s cross country team had one of its most successful seasons in program history. Ranked as high as 22nd in the nation during the season, the Lady Bears struggled to a fourth place finish at the Big 12 Championships. After a third-place showing at the NCAA South Central Regional, Baylor climbed back into the national rankings at 30th overall, and claimed one of the final at-large berths in the NCAA Cross Country Championships. Lauren Hagans earned All-America honors to lead Baylor to a 17th place overall finish, the best finish of any Big 12 school, at the NCAA Championships. Hagans earned All-America honors as the 24th overall American-born competitor at the meet. She is the fourth individual to earn All-America honors, and the first since 1999 when Karin Ernstrom finished 22nd overall competing as an individual. Sherri Smith finished 20th in 1998 and Natalie Nalepa earned consecutive All-America honors in 1990 and Nichole Jones just missed All-America honors finishing as the 3 overall American-born competitor. The 2007 season marked the fifth-straight year that Baylor qualified for the NCAA Championships. The 17th place overall finish was the second-highest during that current streak, and marked the first time during the streak that Baylor was the top finisher from the Big 12 Conference. DRAKE RELAYS RECORDS The 2007 Drake Relays marked a historic weekend for the Baylor track and field teams. The men s squad won all four sprint relay titles (4x100-meter, 4x200-meter, 4x400-meter and sprint medley), while the women s team shattered two Baylor relay records. In winning all four sprint relays, Baylor ties the Drake Relays meet record for relay titles in one year. In 1944, Illinois won all four sprint relays, the only other time the feat has been accomplished by a men's university team. With the win in the 4x400-meter relay, Baylor claims its third straight title in the event at the Drake Relays. The Bears have now won the 4x400-meter relay 13 times since 1992, including nine straight wins between 1992 and Baylor has won 45 relay titles at the Drake Relays, tying Kansas for the second-most alltime at the event that concluded its 98th running. The women's distance medley relay set a new Baylor record with a time of 11:08.88 to finish second in the event. The previous record of 11:15.32 was set at the 2006 Drake Relays. The Lady Bears then set their second school record of the night, placing second in the women's 4x800-meter relay in 8: That time was more than 13 seconds faster than the previous school record set at the 2007 Texas Relays, and at the time was the secondfastest time in the world. BAYLOR IN WORLD RANKINGS Two Baylor relays appear in the world rankings for The men s indoor 4x400-meter relay ranked as the fastest in the world during 2007, clocking a time of 3:04.24 at the NCAA Championships. The same Baylor squad also ranked third in the world following a 3:05.14 performance at the Tyson Invitational. In addition, the men s outdoor 4x400-meter relay ranked fourth in the world with its school-record time of 3: The women s outdoor 4x800-meter relay clocked a time of 8:28.48 at the Drake Relays to set a new school record. The time was the second-fastest in the world at the time, and ended the year as the third-fastest time in the world for WITHERSPOON NAMED BIG 12 ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Baylor's Reggie Witherspoon was named Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week last season for meets through Jan. 15.
