February 19, 2019 To All Skiers, The Pasadena Ski & Nature Park is delighted to extend a genuine invite to all cross country ski enthusiasts to participate in the upcoming The Outfitters 49 th Annual Newfoundland & Labrador Cross Country Ski Marathon. The event is scheduled to take place on Saturday, March 09, 2019 in our park. This is PSNP s only 2 nd time to host the Provincial Marathon. The first time was back in March 1978 and brought together young and old from across the Province. It seemed to have been one of the best attended Marathon s in NL s history. Of course, we d like to see you all back with your children and extended families and friends. So mark this date in your calendar and come out to experience (once more) our extended trail system. If you can convince us (picture etc.) that you had attended the 1978 Marathon in Pasadena, you will receive a special PSNP gift. We have designed the Marathon Route for you to experience all aspects of our trail network. We have added some shorter distances to make this event available for most ages and capabilities. Attached you will find more detailed information on the course distances, deadlines for registration (including Early Bird Specials), Banquet information and some other relevant advise to get you prepared for that Saturday. On behalf of the organizing committee, we hope to see you at our chalet and on the trails for this special event on March 09. Please do not hesitate to contact the club if you have any questions or need clarifications. We look forward to welcoming you all. Jana Fenske On behalf of the PSNP Marathon Organising Committee Pasadena Ski & Nature Park PO Box 209 Pasadena, NL A0L1K0 Phone: pasadenaxc@gmail.com Web: Facebook: 1

Courses This year we put together 4 courses ranging from 5km to 40.5km: We have a 5.0 km Jackrabbit Loop, a 10.9 km Junior Loop, the Veterans Loop of 21.8 km, which is the Junior Loop skied twice, and a Masters Loop of 13.5 km to be skied 3x for this year s marathon distance (40.5 km). As our trails are not all that flat, we feel the shorter 40.5 km will be challenging enough. We look forward to your feedback. All courses will start in a clockwise direction in front of the chalet. Laps will enter the top part of the stadium (staying left) in order to continue with their next loop; a 2 nd path (straight) will lead to the finish as you enter the stadium area! Our Trails/ Signage team has colour coded the various distances for skier s convenience. For the Masters Loop, follow the purple 40.5 numbers; For the Veterans Loop, follow the green 21.8 numbers; For the Junior Loop, follow the red 10.9 numbers; and For the Jackrabbit Loop, follow the blue 5 numbers. We hope this will help keeping you on track! We have one section along the Marathon and 5km Route that requires caution especially those enjoying a fast downhill. As you approach Look Out Hill, you will see the following sign: At the end of Look Out Hill, you are required to make a sharp left turn. We will have volunteers/ first aid folks stationed on that intersection as well. This intersection is outlined with a yellow circle on the maps. The Happy Face indicates our feed stations one in the stadium area; the 2 nd one on the trail. The arrow marks approx. break point for profile. 4

Master s Loop = Marathon Route: 13.5km skied 3 times The Marathon route is outlined in purple on the map (=our Masters Loop of 13.5 km). This loop must be skied three times for this year s Marathon distance. Ensure you start the 3 rd loop no later than 2:30pm if you do want to finish the Marathon distance; the loop will be closed after 2:30pm. Note: Classic skiers registered for the full 40.5km will be leaving 1 hour ahead of the remaining skiers to allow for ample time to finish the marathon distance and attend the banquet (as well as for volunteers to clear the course and be able to attend the banquet). This route is for skiers registered in: Masters 1 4, or Senior categories (Age 21 and over) 5

Junior Loop = 10.9 km & Veterans Loop = 21.8 km (= Junior Loop skied twice) Anyone registered for Cruisers, Jackrabbit, or Junior 1 will ski the Junior Loop. Anyone registered in the Veterans, Senior Touring, Junior 2, or Masters 5 Divisions ski this loop twice for the full 21.8km distance. 6

Jackrabbit Loop = 5km The Map on your left outlines in blue our Jackrabbit Loop of 5km. This loop is for our Active Living registrants (age 5 and older). The area circled in yellow marks our point of caution: you will be coming down Look Out Hill before making a sharp left turn. We have marked this turn ahead of time see photo at the beginning of this section and will have volunteers on that intersection as well. We strongly advise that all participants age 9 and under should ski in a group with at least one adult. Safety/ Ski Etiquette: Refreshments will be provided on the trail about 500m past the Caribou start see on map. First Aiders will also be located on the Intersection following the hill. Snowmobile patrol will be ready to deploy at the stadium area - prepared for emergency evacuations, if required. There are a few unwritten rules you should know about. As this event is geared towards recreational skiers as well as skiers choosing to race, it is probably good to share some common understanding to avoid any accidents or arguments while you're skiing. If you come up behind a slower skier, be prepared, that person may not get out of the way (for different reasons). If you need to overtake the person, always do so on the left side. You can always slow down and wait for the person to get out of the way (hopefully stepping to the right) where it's more suitable. Also, always be extra careful if you come up behind a child or a family. You don't want to risk hurting someone just because you're trying to set a new personal record time. Then this event is not for you. Classic Skiers: If you are being asked to step out (skiers from behind might shout TRACK ), please step out to the 7

right (the pole planting lane ), if it is safe and stop. (Watch for brooks/ ditches) Keep your arms and poles close to the body in order to let the person behind ski on without being hindered. Please do not step into the skate ski lane as this is a shared race and route. Skate Skiers: If you are being taken over, please stay to the right as best as you can please try really hard to keep our classic track sets in good shape for everyone s enjoyment; not just yours. You may also step into the classic track and wait if you are not hindering a classic skier. If you are taking over, please keep in mind that we have narrow trails (with ditches and brooks on the sides) and this may not always play to your advantage. Please be cordial and make sure it is safe for all when taking over. Remember: If you're asked to "step aside", be sure to do so to the right safely and keep your poles close to your body. If you come up behind someone slower, call for attention by shouting "Excuse me"/ TRACK When you pass the person, make sure to thank her/him - this is not only the polite way to do it, it also makes cross country skiing even more enjoyable for everyone who's out there. If you get passed on an uphill slope, try to keep to the right, stop, make room for anyone faster than you and enjoy their speed and technique.
