1 COLLEGE NEWS No March 2016 Round Square Africa Regional Conference 14 15yrs Constitution Hill and an address by Justice Edwin Cameron at the Round Square Africa Regional Conference for students 14 15yrs. 2 From 18th to 22nd February, a group of nine Grade 9 Bridge House students went to Johannesburg for the Africa Regional Junior Conference 2016 at Roedean School (SA). The experience was sensational. Our group joined 19 other schools from Africa and South Africa. We visited Flying Children Preschools in the West Rand, Constitution Hill and the Johannesburg Zoo. Shaka Sisulu, Justice Edwin Cameron and Sonja Kruse - The Ubuntu Girl, all spoke to us about Service, Democracy and Adventure. Roedean hosted an exceptional conference and it has made us all doubly enthusiastic for our own chance next year. Ms Kate Bold

4 International Round Square Conference 2017 Planning Hosting an international conference of over delegates from all over the world requires long term planning. In 2017, Bridge House, St Cyprian s and St George s will play hosts to the 2017 International Round Square Conference which will take place in South Africa. What an exciting prospect! The Grade 10s at St Cyprian s, St George s and Bridge House, who will be in Grade 11 when the conference is held here, have since last year been getting together each term to brainstorm ideas and plan for the conference. This week the planning session was held at St Cyprian s. Not only are these sessions a valuable opportunity for learning creative and organisational skills but also for networking and making contacts with pupils from the other schools.

5 Little Tags Make a Big Impact! Mary Honeybun turns tiny pieces of plastic into lifechanging gifts! This incredible octogenarian raises funds for wheelchairs by collecting the tags used to keep plastic bags tied around a loaf of bread something most people discard without giving it a second thought. Bread tags come in many shapes, sizes and colors. They are made of high impact polystyrene and they have a good recycling value. Mary sells the bread tags for recycling and facilitates the handing out of wheelchairs for disabled people with the help of the Wheelchair Foundation. Last week in assembly, Christiaan Cloete in Grade 9 (below), launched this project at Bridge House and appealed to parents, pupils, friends and family members to collect these tags. It takes 200 bread bags full of tags that are packed into 10 black bags or 200 kg of tags to bring in enough money to buy one wheelchair. The College Class reps will be coordinating this collection in their classes and you are asked to get collecting now and to send in your bread tags to add to the collection.

6 Bridging the Gap, the fun weekly e-news which aims to keep the school informed about what s happening in the Learning Commons, will be available on the school website from this week. See here: The e-news suggests books which are worth adding to your to-read list, gives a brief overview of the displays which are currently mounted in the Learning Commons and also highlights events in the world of books. There are regular suggestions of useful apps for the ipad, as well as handy websites and a weekly brainteaser and cartoon add a sense of fun to the newsletter. A post on the D6 Communicator on a Friday afternoon will indicate when the latest issue of the e-news has been uploaded. Enjoy! Mrs Lynn van der Vegte Discovery Vitality hand over cheque This week, Avi Joseph from Discovery Vitality Healthy Schools handed over a cheque for R which Bridge House won last year by following some of the guiding principles for being a healthy school. Receiving the checque is Mr Riaan van der Rheede, who has coordinated the Bridge House Vitality School compliance process. 10 Sports Update SWIMMING FRANK MYBURGH TWILIGHT GALA Congratulations to all the swimmers who participated in the Frank Myburgh Twilight Gala on Thursday 25 February in Worcester. Eleven schools participated in this gala and it is the most prestigious gala on the Boland High Schools Aquatics calendar. Bridge House did extremely well to come third in the Co-Ed section behind Paarl Gymnasium and Parel Vallei.
