3 WELCOME TO THE MCCAIN UK CROSS CHALLENGE SERIES As the sport sets its sights on what is certain to be an immensely entertaining and engrossing next 12 months it gives us great pleasure to welcome you to the McCain Cross Challenge that culminates in March This welcome is extended to each and every athlete, coach, parent and official who make the events possible. I hope you enjoy your day. Thanks also to our sponsor McCain, who continue to invest over 1 million a year in the growth of grassroots athletics across the UK. Cross Country has a huge tradition in the UK and forms the fabric of sport for many of our top endurance athletes and has been an integral part of their build up towards a successful summer track season. For many of our juniors it provides their first international experience, but it also provides a competitive environment that brings together all of our endurance athletes at every level. The McCain UK Cross Challenge is established part of the performance pathway creating opportunities for the country s established and emerging performers to get meaningful competitive opportunities at an appropriate level. The incentive of British prize money also supports the preparations of our very best senior athletes in developing as performers on the international stage. UKA is proud to be associated with all that the Series represents. Whatever level of aspiration the athletes have, their very presence here is evidence of a level of ambition that we want to celebrate. 5 MCCAIN BRISTOL CROSS CHALLENGE WELCOME BACK TO BRISTOL McCain Bristol Cross Challenge Sunday 13 November 2011 The McCaine Cross Challenge opens this autumn with the new addition of Ashton Court Estate to the series, which means the Cross Challenge will kick off in its place of origin. Bristol played host to the inaugural Cross Challenge meeting in 1997 and will be the perfect starter to the cross country series which once again features five events: Bristol, Liverpool, Cardiff, Antrim and the series final in Birmingham. Ashton Court was also the venue for the 2002 English Cross Country Championships, and on Sunday 13 November 2011 the estate will again be the setting for a series of high quality competitive Cross Country races. Those taking part will range from junior to senior elite athletes and include some top UK athletes who regularly run in the city s famous Bristol 10k and Bristol half marathon road races. The event will be staged by Bristol City Council s runbristol, in partnership with UK Athletics as part of the McCain UK Cross Challenge Series. The event will also incorporate the Mike Sully Championships and Gemma Butler Bowl in partnership with local club Bristol & West AC. A special guest at the event will be Olympian Tim Hutchings, founder of the Brighton Marathon. Hutchings twice won a silver medal at the World Cross Country Championships in 1984 and again in BD2004 Bristol City Council. 6 MCCAIN BRISTOL CROSS CHALLENGE PRE RACE and RACE DAY INFORMATION UKA guidance for competitors Athletes should be advised that they are responsible for their own safety before, during and after the race, this includes the wearing of suitable clothing and footwear as appropriate for the conditions. Runners should have an up-to-date tetanus injection. Medical information, race number and timing chip Each athlete will be allocated a race number and MyLaps/ChampionChip timing chip. It is essential that athletes wear both during the race. Athletes must not swap their race number with any other runner as it could create a dangerous medical situation in the event of an emergency. Anyone who is found to have swapped their number will be disqualified and reported to UKA. Athletes must provide full and correct medical and contact information on the back of the race number using permanent ink and ensure that relatives (or other named person race organisers can contact) have their race number for reference. Bag storage Bag storage will be provided. Athletes must wear their race number to deposit and reclaim bags. Club tents Teams are invited to bring their own tents for use on race day. Please see the club tent area marked on the map. Overnight camping is not permitted. Coach parking There is no parking for coaches at the event site. Coaches should drop off at Church Lodge (see travel map) and park in the city centre (Cumberland Road). Race entry registration and queries The race admin service provider FRSystems registration desk will be open from 8.30am. FRSystems will issue race numbers and timing chips which will have been pre-allocated as per entry information. They will also deal with any problems relating to race entries. Medical conditions If you have a medical condition, it is vital that you notify the race organisers on prior to the event. Please also write details of your condition and / or any medication you are taking on the reverse of your number (for example: asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, notable allergies, cardiac conditions). Timing clocks There will be a race clock adjacent to the Start/Finish gantry. page 4

7 MCCAIN BRISTOL CROSS CHALLENGE RACE DAY and POST RACE INFORMATION Timing Chips MyLaps/ChampionChip timing system will be used and should be attached securely to the shoe/ankle during the race. Please be aware that it will not work if attached to another part of the body. Race numbers On race day all participants should wear their race number on the chest, secured with a safety pin in each corner. The number must not be cut or altered in any way to reduce its size. It is each athlete s responsibility to ensure they arrive at the finish line with their race number intact. Without it they will not be allowed to take part or receive a time. Athletes should not remove their number before leaving the event site. Race Drink Stations There will be a water station at the Finish. Medical Points St John Ambulance will provide a first aid point adjacent to the event services area (the Meeting & Eating - big tent). During the race they will provide mobile cover. If athletes require medical assistance on the course please notify the nearest marshal. Finish Area At the end of the race runners will pass under the Finish Gantry and cross the timing mat. All participants will then be directed through the finish funnels. Please keep moving as quickly as possible through this area before exiting into the public event areas. Timing chips can either be left in the tubs in the finish area or taken to the tubs in the Eating & Meeting tent. Race results Results will be available on the race website from 9pm on race day. There will also be a special Bristol Evening Post souvenir edition supplement on sale on Monday 14th November. Race Photography The official race photography service will be provided by marathon-photos.com.
