1 RACE WEEKEND MAY 26-28, 2017 BURLINGTON, VT

2 WEEKEND CALENDAR GREETINGS & WELCOME TO VERMONT! We re always amazed at how fast time passes, it seems like just a few weeks ago we were shoveling snow and lamenting the challenges of winter training. And now, that s all behind us. It s time to put one foot in front of the other, and keep doing so until we find one another in Waterfront Park. As you wind your way around the course, you re going to meet some of our greatest ambassadors our spectators. You ll see your family, your friends and a whole lot of enthusiastic friends- to-be. They ll be out there cheering for you, whether you ve met them already or not. They re going to be yelling for you at the start, they ll be hooting and hollering as you run through the Church Street Marketplace (both times) and they ll be waiting for your arrival in the South Cove neighborhood as you approach the midpoint. They ll be shouting encouragement as you make the assault on Battery and they ll be out in force as you navigate your way through the North End neighborhoods. And you re sure to enjoy the crew in the Lakeside Estates neighborhood, they have a well-deserved reputation for providing the warmest welcome on the course. The spectators will be lined up all along the bike path as you head into the last few miles and they ll be screaming until they have no voice left as you make your way into Waterfront Park, to cross the long sought after finish line. Simply stated, our spectators are spectacular, they re going to make you feel like a rock star. They ll make you feel like this race is all about you, The volunteers who will serve you this weekend definitely feel a sense of ownership as many have been with us for years. The local businesses all look forward to marathon weekend so they can welcome the runners into their respective establishments. Our support agencies, including all the police and public safety organizations and the members of our medical team, enjoy the opportunity to use their skills to provide a positive outcome for all. 14 YOU NEED TO KNOW: FROM THE MEDICAL TEAM The People s United Bank Vermont City Marathon Medical Team is a group of dedicated volunteer medical personnel who provide rapid assessment and treatment of your medical needs during the marathon. PLEASE FILL OUT THE EMERGENCY MEDICAL AND CONTACT INFO ON THE BACK OF YOUR BIB. No matter how fit you feel on race day, this information could help us save your life should something happen to you on the course. Medical Stations Our fully staffed medical tent is located at the finish line in Waterfront Park. In addition, medical aid stations are located throughout the course (about every 1.5 miles). Medical personnel can be identified by their MEDICAL vest and photo ID badge. Weather The weather can be unpredictable. Check the local forecast and plan accordingly. The average temperature for May 28 in Burlington is 55 degrees at 8:00am and 68 degrees at noon. Race officials will monitor the temperature, humidity and radiant heat to determine the risk of weather related danger to participants. A sign indicating the current alert level will be present at each aid station. Please familiarize yourself with the chart on page 15 so that you are aware of what the signs mean and what the recommended action is. Rules about Fluids It is well established that physiological function and performance is compromised as a result of dehydration. Sports drinks are generally the preferred beverage to maintain optimum hydration (many of these include essential electrolytes). The following tips will help you decide how much to drink on race day: Drink at least 16 ounces of fluid 1-2 hours before the race and drink another 16 ounces of fluid in the hour before the race. Check your urine 1/2 hour before the race: if it is clear to yellow then you are well pre-hydrated; if it is dark and concentrated then drink more fluids! During the race drink no more than 1 cup (8-10 ounces) of fluid every minutes along the way - that may not mean a cup at EVERY water station. Remember to drink enough but DO NOT OVER DRINK! Fluid replacement should approximate sweat and urine losses to maintain hydration at less than 2% body weight reduction. These are guidelines only athletes must know their individual needs. Runners who sweat more than average will require more than the recommended amount of fluids. Hyponatremia is a disorder of fluid-electrolyte balance that results in a dangerously low sodium concentration in the blood. Excessive drinking, sodium loss from sweating, and the kidney s limited capacity to excrete water will dilute sodium in the body s fluids and can cause hyponatremia. Athletes that drink too much before and during prolonged exercise and salty sweaters are at risk. Females, runners with a slight build, runners taking over 4 hours to complete the course, and those taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (such as Advil, Motrin, Aleve, ibuprofen, naproxen, etc.) may be particularly susceptible to this risk. Nausea, vomiting, throbbing headache, dizziness, severe fatigue, swollen hands and feet, wheezy breathing, confusion, disorientation, and lack of coordination may all be seen with hyponatremia. In severe cases, it may result in seizure, respiratory arrest, coma and even death. Symptoms can occur up to 24 hours after an endurance event. (See fluid guidelines above and know your own fluid needs.) 14

15 Pain Relievers Recent medical research has shown that non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like Advil, Motrin, Aleve, ibuprofen, naproxen, etc. may be harmful to a runner s kidney function if taken within 24 hours of an event. NSAIDs are thought to increase the possibility of hyponatremia during endurance activities by causing decreased blood flow to the kidneys and interfering with a hormone that helps the body retain salt. Therefore it is recommended that on race day you do not use any analgesic but acetaminophen (Tylenol) if needed after midnight on race day. NSAIDs may be taken again 6 hours after you have finished the race providing you are able to drink without nausea or vomiting, have urinated once, and are feeling physically and mentally normal. Runners should continue to walk for at least minutes after finishing the race. Standing still or stopping can cause you to feel nauseous, dizzy, and weak. Endurance athletes may experience fainting immediately after completing a race if they don t continue to walk. Walking will help to redirect the blood pooling in your legs back to vital organs, including your brain. Drink fluids slowly as tolerated. If you think you need help, ask one of our medical personnel at the finish. Beverages and food are available in the Hannaford Runner s Food Tent. Questions? YOU NEED TO KNOW: FROM THE MEDICAL TEAM The Medical Team is here to help! Please stop by the medical tents if you need help or have questions. We re here for you! At each medical station will have medical professionals to help you along the way. EMERGENCY ALERT SYSTEM IMPORTANT MEDICAL INFORMATION Please print in pen before race. 16 Timing: How It Works The ChronoTrack B-Tag is a RFID (radio frequency identification) strip located on the back of your bib. Your time will be read at the start, finish and intermediate locations. You must cross all locations and complete the official course to get an official time. You must wear the bib provided in your packet. Do not trade bibs with anyone; your time corresponds with your bib number. There will be video checkpoints and volunteers checking race numbers along the course. Failure to appear at video checkpoints may result in disqualification. Relays: Both members of the 2-person relay have the B-Tag on the back of their bibs. Only the last leg of the 3-5 person relay wears the B-Tag. Bib Do s and Don ts Our ability to provide accurate timing and essential medical assistance when necessary depends on YOU. Make certain your bib is: Clearly visible on the front of the torso Unaltered and unmodified (do not fold or wrinkle) Pinned in all four corners Not covered (jackets, runner belts, water bottles, etc.) Gels carried in foil packets may interfere with the timing strip. Please store gels several inches away from your bib during the race. Completely filled out with your medical information (back of bib) No tag, no time. No exception. Participation Policy RunVermont reserves the right to restrict participation in any event for violation of RunVermont rules and regulations. Visit runvcm.org for deferral and transfer policies. RunVermont events are organized under and conducted according to USATF and RRCA rules. Anyone who participates in an event produced by RunVermont must be properly registered and must have paid any required registration fees prior to the start of the race. Entrants in RunVermont events will be given a race bib for scoring purposes and to aid course officials in identifying legitimate participants during the event. Bibs may not be transferred from a registered participant to any other person. A registered runner who provides their bib to another runner will also be treated as an unregistered runner and subject to the sanctions described here. Individuals who participate in any RunVermont event without registering will be removed from the race. RunVermont reserves the right to bar unregistered participants from future RunVermont events. Unregistered individuals participating in RunVermont events may also be subject to additional sanctions from USATF and/or RRCA. Additional actions, including prosecution, may be taken for theft of services. For People s United Bank Vermont City Marathon Relay Participants only, the transfer of relay team ownership is permissible, as long as the transfer is conducted in the manner prescribed on the official People s United Bank Vermont City Marathon website. Bikes, in-line skates, strollers, dogs and skateboards are not allowed on the course. Headphones are strongly discouraged. Cancellation policy There are a number of potentialities that may cause event officials to either delay, interrupt or cancel the People s United Bank Vermont City Marathon & Relay event. Such conditions may include local emergencies, such as fires or mass casualty incidents, acts of God, terrorism, severe weather conditions or any combination thereof. The presence of conditions that might generate a decision to cancel the race will be communicated via the event s media partners and the event website, runvcm.org. The variables most likely to affect the disposition of the event are extreme weather conditions. In the unlikely event that extreme conditions exist prior to race start, we will cancel the race and notify runners at the start and through the media. If for any reason the event is canceled by race officials, participants will not be entitled to registration refunds. You Inspire Us All. Congratulations to the runners and organizers for another incredible marathon!
