1 Season 9 Issue 2 World Masters Lyon OCTOBER 2015 MAWA smiles Carol Bowman is all smiles after receiving her silver medal for the relay. 1
2 Women lead the way By DAVID CARR FAR from home, out of season, small population. None of this was a barrier for our team in Lyon, particularly for the outstanding women athletes of Masters WA. Margaret Saunders again won the steeple. Peggy Macliver was part of the world record 4x400m. Melissa Foster won one gold and one silver medals. Better known as a hammer thrower, Byrony Glass won silver in the weight throw and bronze in the throws pentathlon. Lynne Ventris continued her string of gold medal walks. Lorna Lauchlan proved herself as a track walker. Carol Bowman battled as hard as anyone for her two medals, while Lorraine Lopes again displayed her talent. What do they have in common? (Leaving aside obvious issues of time and money). All managed their injuries, had suitable training programmes and established short and long term goals. MAWA MEDAL TABLE G S B David Carr 4 Lyn Ventris 4> 1^ Peggy Macliver 2* 1 Lorna Lauchlan 2 Irwin Barrett-Lennard 1 3 Melissa Foster 1 1 Margaret Saunders 1 1* Lorraine Lopes 1 1 Jim Langford 1^ 1 Byrony Glass 1 1 Carol Bowman *1 ^1 Chris Tittel 1 Lynne Schickert ^1 Mike O Reilly ^1 *Relay medal ^Team medal >Includes one team medal Peggy was barely able to walk twelve months ago. She persevered, took the right advice and treatment, ran in the water, ran intervals and did sprint training in Dave Wyatt's group. Margaret ran in 2 2 the water and on the grass when unable to do vigorous training. Lynne Ventris always walks high mileage and adheres to her coach's advice. Lorna solicited a training partner, Jan Fletcher, to pace her trackwork. For Lorraine it was whatever mileage she could manage, interspersed with intervals. Carol's medals were earned by many long runs and weekly interval sessions. All of them overcame injuries or personal tribulations. An outstanding long jumper, Melissa Foster has worked on technique with Ann Masters and Lyndsey Glass. She was rewarded with gold and an Australian record in the triple jump, silver in the long jump and a solid performance in her new event, the heptathlon. Here is a forecast: Perth 2016 will see the emergence of a wonderful group of men who were not present in Lyon. Ten names come readily to mind.
3 World record breakers Marie Kay W55 heptathlon Lavinia Petrie W70 half marathon W70 4 x 400m relay: Peggy Macliver, Marg Allison, Anne Lang and Jean Hampson. 5 Aussies make mark WA s Matt Staunton, Mark Elms, Melissa Foster and Clive Choate soak up the atmosphere of the opening ceremony. By DAVID CARR THE best publicity for Perth 2016 came from our performances on the track. In the new uniform we looked good and had enough success to impress the opposition. For instance, with about 12 times our population, USA would need to win 624 gold to equal our 52 on a per capita basis. They won 57. One calculation included medals won for distance of travel. That way, we run faster than the French. We can expect a home-ground advantage next year. The championships were well conducted and Lyon was hospitable, and tolerant of our bumbling few words of French. Using four tracks, as much as an hour apart, and temperatures up to 39C tested us, but it was the same for all and once we found our way around, it was no problem. Conditions seemed not to affect performances. At the track, there was a sense of theatre, much as would see at a basketball game. Plenty of loud music and paired commentators stirring the crowd. 5
