1 201 7 R U N N E R S G U I D E Welcome to the 2017 Butch Cassidy 10K and 5K. We are happy you have joined us for this year s race. Please review the important information in this runners guide. If you have additional questions, please call or dcd@infowest.com. We look forward to seeing you on race day, Saturday November 11, 2017! Packet Pick-Up You may pick up your race number and race packet at the Springdale Town Hall, 118 Lion Boulevard, during the following times: Friday, November 10 from 12:00PM to 7:00PM Saturday, November 11 (race day) from 7:30AM to 8:30AM (Note: The packet pick-up desk will close promptly at 8:30AM. To ensure an on-time race start please arrive and pick up your packet early. Please be aware that there is major road construction going on in Springdale. Be prepared for delays of up to 30 minutes to get through the road construction in Springdale. Plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time.) Parking Parking is limited at the start line. Please carpool to reduce parking congestion at the start area. Limited parking for race participants is available at the Springdale Town Hall / Canyon Community Center. On-street parking on Lion Boulevard is available for racers when the Town Hall parking fills up. Race volunteers will help you find parking on race morning. Please follow the direction of the race volunteers so we can make the most efficient use of limited parking supply. Start Time and Location The 5K and 10K will both start at 9:00AM at the Canyon Community Center (126 Lion Boulevard). Please be aware that there is major road construction going on in Springdale. Be prepared for delays of up to 30 minutes to get through the road construction in Springdale. Plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time. Pre-Race Stretch Routine There will be an organized stretch and calisthenics routine for those who do not want to pull a hammy. The prerace stretch routine will begin at 8:30AM on the grass in front of the gazebo next to the Canyon Community Center.

2 Course Due to highway reconstruction in Springdale we were not able to obtain the necessary permits to run our traditional Springdale to Grafton course. This year we have developed an alternate course while we wait for the road construction to be completed. We want to make sure you are aware of the course changes for this year's 10k and 5k. Both the 5k and 10k will be loop courses, starting and finishing at the Town Park adjacent to the Canyon Community Center (126 Lion Boulevard). The 10k course will be a two-mile loop; runners will complete the loop three times. The course will feature paved roads, gravel paths, and dirt single track. We think you will really enjoy the 10k course. It is scenic and showcases a part of Springdale's growing trail system. However, the course does present some technical challenges not present on the traditional road course. Here are some things you should know about the 10k course: The single-track portion of the course is narrow, has loose footing, and contains hazards such as uneven terrain, rocky sections, and prickly cactus nearby. Most runners will have no difficulty navigating these hazards, but you should be aware that this is not a smooth road course. Due to the narrow and rough trails, the 10k course will not accommodate strollers. Because the single-track portion of the course is narrow, please use courtesy and caution in passing other runners and letting other runners pass you. If you are passing, announce yourself well in advance and ask permission to pass on the left. If you are being passed, move as far to the right of the trail as possible to let the passing runner by on the left. Both those who are passing and those who are being passed should try to stay on the improved trail. Please do not go off the trail to pass other runners or to let others pass. In the event of rain the single-track portion of the trail will be muddy and un-runnable. We will use a modified course in the event of rain. If you are at all nervous about your ability to run on dirt single track, or if you are planning on pushing a stroller, you may want to consider competing in the 5k this year. Let us know if you want to switch from the 10k to the 5k no later than Tuesday, November 7. The 5k will be a one-mile loop course; runners will complete the loop three times. The 5k course is entirely on paved roads and wide gravel paths. It is very scenic and is perfect for runners of all ages and abilities. Strollers are welcome on the 5k course, however we ask that you start towards the rear of the pack if you are planning on pushing a stroller. Important Note: Because both courses will be loop courses, and because the 10k and 5k courses overlap in some areas, there will be faster runners who lap more leisurely runners and walkers. Please use courtesy when passing and being passed. Please pass on the left, and move to the right when being passed. If walking or running in a large group, please avoid taking up the entire road or path so others can move past you on the left if needed. 10K Course Preview On Friday, November 10 there will be a course preview of the 10K loop for runners who want to get a feel for the course before the race. Meet at the gazebo in the Town Park (next to the Canyon Community Center, 126 Lion Boulevard) at 4:00pm. We will run one loop of the 10K course (two miles). This will be a great opportunity to help you become familiar with the course so you are aware of the potential hazards.

3 Water / Aid Stations We will have one aid station set up on the course serving water and Gatorade. Because of the loop design of the course and the placement of the aid station, runners will pass the aid station six times throughout the race. Although you probably don t need to drink Gatorade six times in a 5k or 10k, you will have the option to do so if you wish. On a related note, portable toilets will be provided at the start/finish area. You will pass those six times as well. Special Runner Competitions If you thought the Butch Cassidy Race was just about running fast you were wrong, dead wrong. We want you to run fast, but we also want you to have some fun while doing it. Participate in the following supplemental voluntary race competitions to enhance your race experience. Butch Cassidy Look-A-Like Contest: Run the race dressed as Butch Cassidy and you will receive a special prize at the awards ceremony. The best Butch Cassidy (as judged by our panel of expert historians and wardrobe specialists) will receive an extra-special prize. Judging and prizes will be part of the awards ceremony which starts around 10:15AM. Poker Run: Runners will be dealt one poker card on each loop of the race. Watch for the card dealers at the mile markers and grab a card as you pass by. Take your cards to the awards tent at the finish area where you will be dealt two more cards. The runner with the best poker hand at the end of the race will win a prize. (Note: Five aces is NOT a poker hand.) We will announce the winner as part of the awards ceremony which starts around 10:15AM. Nobody likes cheaters. Trading cards with other runners is cheating. Don t be a cheater. Poker cheats will be dealt with in customary Butch Cassidy style. Catch Butch Cassidy: Butch Cassidy will be running the race. The first five runners in both the 5k and 10k to catch Butch and beat him to the finish will receive a fantastic prize package from the Zion Canyon Brew Pub. Come prepared to run fast and win great prizes. Spectators Butch Cassidy loves spectators! We encourage your friends and family to come watch you run. This year s loop course is especially spectator friendly. Because of the design of the loop course, spectators will have the opportunity to see runners up to six times throughout the race. Please invite your friends and family to come watch you race. Spectators can take advantage of the super yummy breakfast fundraiser while they watch the runners (see next section). Breakfast Fundraiser Otter Play Day Care (a non-profit day care for children whose parents work in Zion National Park and Springdale) will be selling super awesome breakfast pastries and hot beverages from Deep Creek Coffee as a fundraiser. Bring a few extra dollars to purchase some breakfast and support a great cause. Note: All runners will receive a coupon for one free hot beverage in their race packets. Results and Awards Trophies will be given to the overall male and female winners in both the 10K and 5K. Age division medals will be given to the top three finishers in each age group in the 10K and 5K. All participants 10 and under in the 5K

4 receive a finishers medal. The awards ceremony will be part of the post race party and will start around 10:15AM. The race will be timed by RunnerCard. Online results will be available after the race at Raffle We have loads of fine raffle prizes donated by our generous sponsors. We will randomly draw runner numbers for raffle prizes while the race is going on. Check the raffle board at the awards table after the race to see if your number was chosen and you won a raffle prize (look for your race number on the board). You must be present to claim your raffle prize. If you don t pick your prize up after the race we will give it to someone else. Finish Line Festivities As always, we will have an awesome spread of finish line recovery food for all our runners. We will also have live music. Enjoy some good food and good tunes after the race. Our special runner competitions (Butch Cassidy Look-A-Like, Catch Butch Cassidy, Poker Run) will also be part of the finish line festivities. Come for the race, stay for the party! Pre-Race Movie Night The Town of Springdale is sponsoring a movie night on Friday, November 10 at 7:00pm. We will show Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid at the Canyon Community Center, 126 Lion Boulevard. The movie is free. Free popcorn and drinks will also be provided. Come join the fun to get in the Butch Cassidy spirit! Lodging and Dining in Springdale Springdale is home to many fine hotels, inns, and B&B s that can provide accommodations for racers on race weekend. We encourage you to stay for the weekend and enjoy the beautiful fall weather in Zion Canyon. Springdale also boasts a variety of fine restaurants for a healthy pre-race meal on Friday night or a hearty postrace lunch on Saturday afternoon.
