Bike mechanics from VeloFix will be available to help out with some last minute adjustments. They will be able to provide light bike maintenance only and will not have the tools and materials to fix major mechanical issues, and will not have any equipment for sale. Please make sure you have your bar ends covered, and have spare tubes and C02 cartridges for your bike in case of a flat tire. As part of your preparation for the race, inspect your bike a few weeks before race day. If you notice anything major, take it to your local bike shop. While you are at the transition area, take a moment to walk through where you will be running in from the swim, out on the bike and run courses, and coming in on your bike. Large, easy to see signage directs you to the swim in/bike in on the north side of the transition area and to bike out/run out on the south side of the transition area. Large sequential row signs are placed at each row down the center aisle of the transition area making it easy to find your bike on race day. If you are not able to bring your bike during these hours, another registered athlete with a wristband can rack your bike for you. The transition area closes Saturday night at 5:00 PM, and the last shuttle leaves the transition area heading back to the hotels at 5:15 PM. We're bringing it back in 2017: FREE TRANSITION CLINIC at 2:00 PM Bring your bike down to rack and stay for our Transition Clinic presented by USA Triathlon coach Jon Ryder. This clinic is available to all registered athletes with a wristband and no prior registration is required. Thanks to Coach Ryder for putting this clinic together! Bring your questions and feel free to practice while you are down there. NATIONS TRIATHLON Athlete Guide Page 6

RACE DAY INSTRUCTIONS TRANSITION AREA COURSE INFO: SWIM, BIKE AND RUN FINISH LINE FESTIVAL TRANSITION AREA The transition area opens at 5:00 AM on race morning. Once you arrive, you will need to get body marked if you have not yet done so. Volunteer body markers will be located just inside of transition. The transition area is laid out along the banks of the Potomac River immediately adjacent to the new Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in a north-south orientation with a wide central aisle. Large, easy to see signage directs you to the swim in/bike in on the north side of the transition area and to bike out/run out on the south side of the transition area. Large sequential row signs are placed at each row down the center aisle of the transition area making it easy to find your bike on race day. Water will be available in the transition area to top off your water bottles. There is no bottle exchange on the bike route, so make sure you arrive on race morning with whatever drinks you wish to consume while on the bike course. The transition area will close promptly at 6:55 AM. You must have all of your gear set up and be out of the transition area before this time. If there are any items you want to bring out with you, we will have a Gear Check available near the swim start. Pay close attention to when and where your swim group is queuing up DON T MISS YOUR START! The National Anthem will be played at 6:55 AM and the first Olympic swim wave will enter the water at 7:00 AM. Competitors who have completed the race will have access to the transition area after they complete their race, but will not be able to remove their bikes until all athletes returned from the bike course. Please be considerate of those still racing when you re-enter. Remember that you must have a race bracelet to enter the transition area and remove your bike, so don t remove your race bracelet until you have retrieved your bike and your gear. Bike Mechanics The Events DC Nation s Triathlon will have bike mechanics from VeloFix on site in the transition area on Saturday and Sunday. They will be able to provide light bike maintenance only. They will not have the tools and materials to fix major mechanical issues, and will not have any equipment for sale. As part of your preparation for the race, inspect your bike a few weeks before race day. If you notice anything major, take it to your local bike shop. Also check to see if you have bar plugs on the end of your handle bars, as USAT rules require them. BACK in 2017, we will have a few volunteers serving as neutral support available to all athletes. These volunteers will be wearing volunteer shirts and safety vests and will be on bikes. Please bear in mind, they will only be able to help with MINOR mechanical issues or help you repair a flat. If you have a mechanical challenge that they can't help with, you can wait for the SAG vehicle that trails the last biker, unless you are close enough to walk back to the transition area. At a minimum, make sure you have a spare tire, tube and means of inflation. While the mechanics in transition will have pumps, we encourage participants to bring pumps with them on race day and share with those around you. We would like to thank VeloFix for working with our athletes over race weekend and all year long! NATIONS TRIATHLON Athlete Guide Page 7

Gear Check If there are items you wish to bring with you outside of transition before the race begins, such as a jacket or shoes, you can drop off these items in your own small bag (no large backpacks or suitcases) at the Gear Check Tent prior to the start. Gear Check will be located outside of transition, near the swim start. Following the race, you can pick your bag up at the same location. We do not recommend checking high value items. Gear Check will also serve as Lost and Found. COURSE INFO Nation s Triathlon features both an Olympic distance course consisting of a 1500m swim, 40k bike and 10k run and a Sprint distance course including a 750m swim, 16 mile bike, and ending with a 5k run. Overall, the course is flat, on wide roads with a few technical turns on the bike and one short climb on the run. Full course maps of both courses are provided on pages 10 and 11. The race day layout is very convenient with the transition area about 50m from the swim start/swim exit and 150m from the finish line. This compact layout makes it convenient for competitors and fun for family, friends and spectators. During your race, make sure to take a minute to thank some of our hundreds of volunteers. Without them, this race is not possible! Premier Event Management would also like to thank our friends at DC Metropolitan Police and US Park Police for working together with us to close the roads along the course, allowing you to experience the streets of Washington, DC with no traffic. SWIM COURSE, WAVES AND WATER TEMPERATURE The Nation s Triathlon swim course is a 1500m loop in the shape of the Washington Monument for the Olympic distance and a 750m rectangular loop for the Sprint distance. It is one of the best marked swim courses in the country. The water temperature recently has been between degrees. In a new swim format for Nation's Triathlon, participants will self-select their swim wave, based on their estimated swim time. Swim waves will enter the water as follows: Olympic Distance Pro Men Pro Women Paratriathletes Gryphon Technologies Military Challenge D.C. Triathlon Club Philadelphia Triathlon Club Estimated swim times, self-seeded: 20 minutes and under 25 minutes and under 30 minutes and under 35 minutes and under 40 minutes and under 45 minutes and under 50 minutes and under 55 minutes and under 60 minutes and under 1:05 minutes and under 1:10 minutes and under Sprint Distance 15 minutes and under 20 minutes and under 25 minutes and under 30 minutes and under 35 minutes and under 40 minutes and under The first Olympic swim wave will start at 7:00 AM, so make sure you are lined up in the proper swim corral that corresponds to your category or estimated swim time. We expect the first Sprint swim wave to enter the water at approximately 8:30 am. The corrals are marked with the category or estimated swim time. You will be able to walk around the venue before you start, so do not lose track of time. NATIONS TRIATHLON Athlete Guide Page 8

Time Trial Swim Start: The first swim group will start at 7:00 AM with a time trial start where 8 athletes will take off every seconds. All athletes must jump into the water feet first; there will be NO diving allowed. Buoys will be marking the course every 100 meters. Athletes will swim the entire course with buoy markers on left side. The first leg of the Olympic distance Washington Monument shaped swim is a 500m straight leg out to the Memorial Bridge with a slight left turn at the 500m buoy just under the Bridge, a hard left turn at the 600m buoy as you are facing Arlington Cemetery, a slight left turn at the 700m buoy, and a straight leg back under the Memorial Bridge to the 1300m buoy, make a 90 degree left to the 1400m buoy then another 90 degree left to the swim exit ramp. The Sprint distance swim will take a similar path, with a turn coming at the 200m buoy, and then another hard left at the very next turn buoy before heading straight back towards the swim dock, passing the swim dock, making one more hard left at the (600) 1300m buoy, swimming to the (700) 1400m buoy then another 90 degree left to the swim exit ramp. Swim directly onto the ramp and exit by running to the right and down the dock to the transition area. Two large buoys will mark the swim exit. The most important thing to remember is to be ready when your self-seeded swim group is called to swim start. Please make sure you have your swim cap, goggles and timing chip. Extra caps and timing chips will be available on the dock if you lose it before the event begins Move quickly down to the swim dock and jump in but remember that the water is shallow at this location. There is absolutely no diving, so do NOT dive in and don t try to hit the bottom. Water Temperature The water temperature in the Potomac River recently has been between degrees. Therefore, we are not sure if the race will be wetsuit-legal. If wetsuits are legal, many athletes will choose to wear them. Wetsuits will not be required. We will announce the preliminary water temperature reads on Saturday at the course briefings. The final water temperature reading will be taken race morning and will be announced on the loud speakers. BIKE COURSE The 40k Olympic course features two loops through beautiful Rock Creek Park, downtown DC and along our monument corridor, followed by a trip over the scenic Potomac River before heading back into transition. The 16 mile Sprint distance athletes will ride on the same course, with only one loop of the downtown section. The course is mostly flat, on wide roads with a number of technical turns that require decent bike handling skills. Race staff and volunteers will be on the course asking you to take caution at certain points on the course, and identifying No Passing Zones. Please obey all on course instructions and slow down where appropriate so no one gets hurt. There are a few key details that will ensure a safe course for all riders: First, it s very important that you stay to the right unless you are actively passing. This is the single greatest source of accidents and problems on the course. If you are not passing someone, riders must stay to the right. If you are passing someone, you must yell passing and give the overtaken bike a reasonable chance to move right. As the passer it is your responsibility to overtake a slower rider in a safe manner. Please don t try to pass if the overtaken biker would be in danger or cause danger to others if they moved to the right or if you have to move too far to the left. Remember that if you are being passed or hear someone behind you yell out passing, look immediately to your right to make sure it s safe to move, then move immediately out of the way of the passer. This is a race and it is anyone s right to pass another competitor on the course. Please respect that person s choice to race hard and do your best to clear the way quickly and safely. After Olympic distance racers complete the first loop, they will head back down Rock Creek Parkway to begin the loop for the second time. This is a hard right turn from Virginia Avenue onto Rock Creek Parkway. There is a CUTOFF TIME to make this turn. All cyclists must have made the right turn onto Rock Creek Park to begin second loop by 10:59 am. After Olympic distance racers completing both loops and Sprint distance racers complete one loop of the downtown section, you will merge left onto Rock Creek Parkway towards the Kennedy Center. You will go back down Independence Avenue past Transition, and make a right turn onto 14 th street to tackle the out and back over the 14 th Street Bridge. After crossing the bridge and heading back onto Independence Avenue, you will begin to slow down, so that you can dismount safely and quickly. Signs will count down in 100m increments the distance you have left to the bike dismount line starting 500m out. Dismount your bike at or before the dismount line and run into the transition area. NATIONS TRIATHLON Athlete Guide Page 9

A few things to remember: This is a USAT-sanctioned event, so all participants MUST have helmets on and fastened before you take your bike off of the rack and until you return your bike to the rack. There is NO bike riding inside the Transition area. There is no bottle exchange on the bike route, so make sure you arrive on race morning with whatever drinks you wish to consume while on the bike course. RETURNING in 2017, we will have volunteers serving as neutral support available to all athletes. RUN COURSE The Nation s Triathlon run is a fun, point to point Olympic 10k or Sprint 5k that takes runners past the Washington Monument, Jefferson Memorial and more. Aid Station There are five aid stations on the Olympic run course, approximately one mile apart. Sprint racers will pass two aid stations; the first at mile 1.2 and the second at mile 2.3. All aid stations will serve water and Gatorade. It is essential to stay hydrated during the race, so please make sure you are taking in drinks and calories as you need. The Finish Line is located on Ohio Drive near the Transition Area. When you cross the finish line make sure your bib number is visible on your front so we can get a great finish line picture compliments of FinisherPix. You don t need to look at your watch we will do the timing for you! Let us put your finisher s medal around your neck as you walk through the finish line chute and make sure to grab some water to rehydrate. Volunteers will also get your timing chip from you at this time. If you feel that you need medical assistance, we will have a fully staffed medical tent in this area. Don t forget to visit the Finish Line Festival for food, activities and music. If you checked a gear bag at the swim start, you can pick it up at the same Gear Check Tent where you left it. FINISH LINE FESTIVAL Congratulations on completing the 2017 Nation s Triathlon! Once you cross the finish line, grab a cold water, return your race chip, and visit the Timing Receipt Tent around the corner from the finish line to pick up your total time and split times. Head over to the Finish Line Festival and enjoy the day s competition with family and friends. The Awards Ceremony will begin at 11:30 AM. Competitors who have completed the race will have access to the transition area after they complete their race, but will not be able to remove their bikes until all athletes returned from the bike course. Please be considerate of those still racing when you re-enter. 16 TRANSPORTATION PARKING SHUTTLE SATURDAY & SUNDAY SATURDAY Expo: If you are driving to the Sports & Fitness Expo at Capitol Riverfront Yards Park, you can street park for a fee (check the meters) or use an indoor garage nearby. You can also bike to the expo. We will have bike parking inside the expo fencing. Please bring a lock if you'd like to secure your bike while you are visiting the expo. Bike Racking: On Saturday, there will be special limited parking available on Ohio Drive adjacent to the transition area for bike racking. To access this parking, cross over the Inlet Bridge. If you want to park your vehicle long-term, then parking is available at Lots A, B and C located about ¾ mile south of the transition area on Ohio Drive just south of Buckeye Drive. Another option is to park at Arlington Cemetery and walk about 1.5 miles across Memorial Bridge to the transition area. Indoor parking is also available about 1 mile away at the Ronald Reagan Building on Pennsylvania Avenue and 14th Street, NW. There is also metered parking available around the Memorial Mall with most meters having a one or two hour time limit. If you get driven down on Saturday (or Sunday), THERE ARE NO DROP OFFS permitted on Independence Avenue. Please be advised that if race officials see you exit your vehicle on Independence Avenue, you face possible disqualification from the event. Shuttle: We will provide an athlete shuttle between the Transition Area and the Omni and between the Transition Area and the Hampton Inn from 12:00 PM - 5:30 PM approximately every half hour. Look for the shuttle bus signs on the west side of the transition area near the intersection of Ohio Drive and West Basin Drive. Please note that bikes are not allowed on shuttle. SUNDAY Shuttle: We encourage athletes staying in our host hotels to take the shuttle systems from the Omni or the Hampton Inn starting at 4:30 AM. The last shuttle will depart the hotels at 6:15 AM. There will be no post-race shuttle, but athletes are able to ride their bikes back to their cars, hotels, or a nearby metro station (several are within one mile of West Potomac Park.) Parking: On race day, parking will be very limited around the transition area. If you do drive, parking is available at Lots A, B, and C on Ohio Drive just north of Buckeye Drive, but please note that Maine Avenue and Ohio Drive close at 6:00 AM, so these lots will only be accessible via 395 South after that time. They will reopen after the race at approximately 2:00 PM. Please note that these lots will fill up quickly, and are first come, first served. There are also parking meters in these lots. Please read and follow the directions on the meters. They were recently installed. There is also the indoor parking at the Ronald Reagan Building on Pennsylvania Avenue and 14th Street approximately 1 mile away. There is street parking available around the National Mall. Take note of any hourly parking restrictions when you park. Please remember that NO DROP-OFFS are allowed on Independence Ave. Please be advised that if race officials see you exit your vehicle on Independence Avenue, you face possible disqualification from the event. We recommend getting dropped off either along Constitution Avenue and walking across the Lincoln Memorial or along 17 th Street, and walking down Independence Avenue. The race starts at 7:00 AM and you will want to know what time your athlete's self-seeded swim wave is scheduled to enter the water. There are many great viewing locations along the grass to watch the athletes as they take on the swim course. Following the swim, spectators can move to the transition area to watch the athletes head out onto the bike course. Once your athlete has moved onto the run course, it is a short and easy walk to the finish line festival where you can wait for them to finish. For those who would like to watch the action on the bike and run, the best walking distance vantage spot is at the Washington Monument at 15th Street and Independence Avenue. From there, spectators will be able to see athletes bike and run past. It also puts you close to the Finish Line Festival. The Finish Line Festival will have many different sponsors and booths for both athletes and spectators to visit. The Timing Receipt tent will provide unofficial results, transition and finisher times. Great post-race food will be provided for athletes and food will be available for purchase for spectators. There will be plenty of seating and activities, so please bring the family along and enjoy the Finish Line Festival. NATIONS TRIATHLON Athlete Guide Page 16
