3 VENUE Rokeby Police Academy 154 South Arm Highway, Rokeby, Tasmania. On Hobart s Eastern Shore approximately 15 minutes from Hobart City Centre and Hobart Airport. Cross Country Course Description The cross country course on Saturday is held 95% on a grass surface. At the time of writing, the surface is firm, however if rain comes it can turn to be a muddy course. There is a road crossing that athletes cross twice. Beyond that road crossing, spikes are appropriate. Carpet may be laid across the road, but be prepared for spikes to go on bitumen if you wear them. The course is relatively flat, with a hill reaching its highest point at the 1k/2k point.

8 RELAY INFORMATION Road Relays Course Description The road relays course is held on bitumen. The start finish area is on the driver training section of the police academy. Runners in the 1k event will be mainly on a flat course, with a slight incline first, decline on the return. Runners in the 1.5km loop will have a steep descent, followed by running back up the same hill on the way back. The relays are compulsory to compete in for all athletes. Relay teams will be selected based on the athlete s performance on the Saturday. Those that are not part of the relay team will be competing in the composite team relay (primary) or the time trials (secondary). It is expected that you organize all travel to and from the venue and if you require accommodation that you book your own. MEALS All athletes are responsible for their own meals including snacks and nutrition for the Championships, except for the excursion day where lunch is included.

10 CEREMONIES The Opening Ceremony will be held on Friday, 11 August 2017 at approximately 3pm. The Closing Ceremony will be held on Monday, 14 August, 2017 at the conclusion of the relay events. EDUCATION EXCURSION The education excursion is compulsory for all participating players and officials as per School Sport Australia Guidelines. The official excursion will be to Port Arthur Historic Site. See for further details on the venue. All students will be attending the excursion to Port Arthur. The students will be under the supervision of 4 team managers for the duration of the excursion. The educational excursion will take place on Sunday 13 st August. The cost of this excursion has been included in the athletes Levy paid to AT and includes lunch and bus transport from Hobart. The place and time for the athletes to be picked up for the excursion is to be confirmed. Each student will receive a 40min walking tour and a 20min cruise, with the following schedule; Walking tour - 40 minutes Harbour Cruise 20 minutes 10.:30 Group Group 2 11:00 Group 3 11:00 Group Group 2 11:40 Group 1 12:00 Group 4 12:20 Group 3

11 CALL TIMES There will be Call Times via the announcer starting 30 minutes prior to each event. Athletes must report to the Call Room no later than 20 minutes prior to the starting time of their event to confirm their entry. Basic uniform checks, including for non-conforming advertising will be made. Athletes must then be taken to the assembly area adjacent to the start line 5 minutes prior to the official start time for the event. There will be 5, 3 and 1-minute warning announcements for athletes in the assembly area. No goods will be collected or stored in the Call Room. Athletes wishing to wear tracksuits or other garments after they leave the Call Room should make arrangements with team managers to collect them from them at the start line. RESULTS Results will be published on the School Sport Australia website 2/sports-results/cross-country-results/ Plus join the conversation on their social media platforms -Twitter #ssacrosscountry. PHOTOGRAPHS The official photographer is Anita Welsh Photography. Team photos have been organized by Athletics Tasmania and the cost of these are included in the Levy paid to AT. The time for the team photo is yet to be confirmed but will be sometime Friday afternoon between 2 and 3pm. Action shots will also be taken throughout the Championships and the photos will be available online to purchase and at the venue. It is assumed that everyone competing gives consent for media release of photos taken by the photographer or by others unless you state otherwise by ing Yvette at stateteammanager@tasathletics.org.au. COMPETITION, DAILY UNIFORM & SPIKES ATHLETICS TASMANIA are excited to partner with PROJECT clothing for the next 3 years with both on track technical apparel and off track training and casual clothing. Athletics is a sport decided by millimeters and milliseconds so it is imperative the athletes are wearing PROJECT s cutting edge technical fabrics and superior fitting garments to allow them to focus on winning! ATHLETICS TASMANIA have created a striking contemporary design to ensure our athletes are proudly representing their state with our signature tiger logo both on and off the competition stage. All team members are to purchase the compulsory clothing items and other clothing is optional. The compulsory gear is team tracksuit (top and bottoms), race top and race pant/short. Please go to the below link to visit to the online clothing shop to purchase your clothing items. Your items will be delivered to the address you nominate on the online order form.

12 I have attached sizing charts for you to look at in order to make sure you get the sizing correct in your order. Please get your online order done by Monday 18 th July in order to receive your items in time for the Championships. If you chose to wear spikes, be prepared for them to go on bitumen for the road crossings. For the relay events on the Monday, these will be conducted on bitumen athletes have to wear racing flats ONLY COMPETITION NUMBERS/TIMING TAGS Each set of competition numbers will have a timing tag attached. Competition numbers will be given to the Team Managers at the Technical Meeting, who will be responsible for issuing to all athletes from their State/Territory. The competition bib numbers issued to competitors for these championships must be worn on the front and back of the competition uniform firmly attached with not less than four (4) pins, so the entire number and sponsorship information can be easily read. No part of the number shall be folded under the uniform. ATHLETICS AUSTRALIA WILL ENFORCE IAAF RULE 143.8, WHICH RENDERS AN ATHLETE LIABLE TO DISQUALIFICATION IF S/HE TAMPERS IN ANY WAY WITH THE COMPETITION NUMBER. FACEBOOK PAGE You have all been invited to join the Facebook page 2017 Tasmanian Cross Country Team by team manager, Yvette. This is also a good way to keep up to date with what is going on. BADGES Athletics Tasmania Badges will be issued to all Tasmanian team athletes at the Championships to keep/exchange. Bags of 10 badges will be available for purchase for $30 when the team photos are taken on the Friday afternoon. WITHDRAWAL FEE Athletes require a medical certificate to withdraw after Levy is paid. The withdrawal fee is the cost of the Levy unless AT have an athlete in waiting to fill the spot in the age group of the withdrawn athlete. MEDICAL First aid will be in attendance during individual and relay events. Athletics Tasmania will also have a medical kit at the venue for competing athletes.

13 SOUVENIER MERCHANDISE Souvenir merchandise will be available to purchase. A copy of the design and cost will be provided in future correspondence. REMINDER The 2017 School Sport Australia Cross Country Championships will include the selection trial for the International School Sport Federation (ISF) World Schools Cross Country team to be held in Paris in April To be selected as an individual competitor the first six athletes in the 16/17 years events (boys and girls) will be the first six team members. Each SSA member body is to please select a school team to represent your state from your 16/17 years Championships to compete in the SSA National Championships in Hobart. Eligible students must be born in the following years: 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003.

16 TEAM MEETINGS AND TRAINING The following dates have been set for team meetings. These team meetings are for both the Primary and Secondary Teams to attend. It is a great opportunity for you to meet your fellow team mates and also the managers of the team. It is strongly advised that you make these team meetings. Northern Team Meeting The time and location is to be confirmed Southern Team Meeting - Wednesday 2 nd August 5pm 6pm at the Domain Athletic Centre. More information will become available regarding these meetings but for now please keep these dates free and put them in your calendars. Training If there are any athletes who have been selected in the team and do not have a coach please contact susan.andrews@tis.tas.gov.au to provide you with a few choices of coaches in your area. Please ensure that you are training regularly up until the Championships and competing in at least 2-3 more cross country competitions prior to the National Cross Country Champs. 17 RESULTS FROM LAST YEAR S CHAMPIONSHIPS It is recommended that you look up the results from last year s National Cross Country Champs: Make a note of 1 st place, 10 th place, 20 th place, 40 th place and 1 st Tasmanian in your age group. Compare your times from your PB over your race distance and set yourself a goal. Ensure that you are familiar with your goal pace and you are completing some race pace shorter intervals each week; e.g. 500m, 800,1k or 2k (for the older athletes) repetitions. Use the pacing guide below to assist you. If anyone would like some cross country specific sessions just let Yvette know.

18 CODES OF BEHAVIOUR Athletes Code of Behaviour Be a good sport. Compete for enjoyment. Strive for personal excellence Work hard for your team as well as yourself. Treat all team mates and opponents as you enjoy being treated yourself. Compete by the rules. Cooperate with team and game officials. Control your behaviour on and off the field. Learn to value honest effort, skilled performance and improvement. Team Managements Code of Behaviour Set a good example for your team. Encourage and create opportunities to develop individual skills. Teach your athletes to be friendly towards officials and opponents. Any unacceptable behaviour from athletes is to be dealt with accordingly. Keep your own knowledge of coaching and the developments of the game up to date. Provide a smoke and alcohol free environment. No tour official of the opposite gender should enter the team change rooms until all team members have completed changing. Parents Code of Behaviour Encourage participation by your children. Provide a model of good sportsmanship for your child to copy. Be courteous in your communication with players, team officials, game officials and sport administrators. Encourage honest effort, skilled performance and team loyalty. Make any new parents feel welcome on all occasions. Do not interfere with the conduct of any events. Spectators Code of Behaviour Demonstrate appropriate social behaviour. Remember children compete for enjoyment. Don t let your behaviour detract from their enjoyment. Let officials conduct events without interference. Support skilled performances and team play with generous applause. Demonstrate respect for opposing players and their supporters.

19 RULES OF COMPETITION 2.1 Rules, Protests & Disputes a) The rules as specified by IAAF shall apply unless stated otherwise. b) In the event of a dispute or grievance arising during event, the matter will be referred in the first instance to the Event Referee for resolution. Initially they are to be made orally then confirmed in writing and handed to the Technical Delegate within twenty (20) minutes of the completion of the race. The Event Referee will then deal with the protest. c) Appeals against the decision of the Event Referee will be referred to a Jury of Appeal comprising three members: Technical Delegate (or nominee), School Sport Australia National Secretary (or nominee) and the Host State Event Convener (or nominee). Decisions of the Jury of Appeal are final. 2.2 Team Size a) Each state/territory is entitled to enter five (5) athletes in each age/gender division in the 10 years, 11 years and 12 years events. b) Each state/territory is entitled to enter six (6) athletes in each age/gender division for the 13 years, 14/15 years, 16/17 years and 18/19 years age group events and, with the inclusion of additional athletes, up to a maximum team size of sixty (60). c) Each state/territory is entitled to enter two (2) athletes in each age/gender division in the 10 years, 11 years and 12 years and 13 years, 14/15 years, 16/17 years and 18/19 years SWD events provided the qualifying standards and classification standards have been met. 2.3 Ages a) Ages of athletes will be determined as at December 31 st of the year of competition b) In individual events, competitors may only run as defined by their year of birth, except in the year of the International Schools Selection trial where students may move up to the 16/17 years age group. c) Athletes representing their school during the international selection trial must reach their 14 th birthday in the year of competition and not reach their 17 th birthday in the year of competition. 2.4 Competition Format a) The Organising Committee in consultation with the National Secretary and the Technical Delegate will determine the program order of events. b) Starting positions for each race will be determined by the Organising Committee conducting a draw for Race 1 and rotating positions for other races. Position 1 will be on the left of the starting line facing the direction of running. Teams will be allocated a particular starting box. c) An elevated banner will mark the finish line along with a thick white line on the ground surface that is clearly visible to all athletes. d) Judges are required to record the finishing order of all athletes. It is recommended that a dictaphone and/or video camera be used to determine accurately athletes final placing s. e) A Cross-Country race shall not commence unless the previous race is finished. This rule may be waived by the Event Referee in the event of severe weather conditions or special circumstances. 2.5 Cross-Country Team Scoring a) Scoring team means a state having at least four athletes completing the race. b) Scoring members includes up to the first six athletes from each state completing the race. c) In determining the finishing positions of scoring members of scoring teams, the race result will be adjusted so that the finishing positions of non-scoring members of scoring team (i.e. more than six from any state) and members of non-scoring teams (i.e. less than four from any state) shall be eliminated. d) If two or more competitors tie for any place, the points for the places concerned shall be aggregated and divided equally amongst the competitors involved in the tie. e) The winning team will be the state, which scores the least number of points by aggregating the positions in which its first four scoring members finish. f) In the case of a tie on points, the team whose fourth scoring member finished nearer to first place shall be declared the winner. If placings remain equal this principle applies to the third scoring member, and so on, until a winner is obtained.

20 g) Athletes representing school teams only and overseas teams will also be eliminated from the team scoring process. 2.6 Relay Event Rules a) Age relay teams for 10 years, 11 years and 12 years shall comprise four (4) athletes from the same state who are eligible for that event. If in any given relay, should there be insufficient numbers, a team replacement can come from a younger age group, however, a team must contain at least half of the correct age group. Composite relay teams shall comprise six (6) athletes from the same state who are eligible for that event. b) Age relay teams for 13 years, 14/15 years, 16/17 years and 18/19 years events shall comprise five (5) athletes from the same state who contested Cross-Country events in that division. If in any given relay, should there be insufficient numbers, a team replacement can come from a younger age group, however, a team must contain at least half of the correct age group. c) The name of athletes representing each state, in their correct running order, will be supplied to the Referee (or nominee) not less than twenty minutes prior to the scheduled start of the race. Changes to the nominated running order can only be made with permission of the Referee (or nominee). d) Each runner will wear a large coloured patch supplied by the School Sport Australia National Secretary on the front and back of the running singlet/top to indicate the age/year group they are competing in. Computer labels with athlete details will be supplied and bib numbers used in the individual event will also be required in the time trials. e) After completion of each relay leg, athletes will establish clear, physical contact at the start/finish line with NO lead off by the outgoing runner. f) All Age relay teams for 14/15, 16/17 and 18/19 years events of a particular gender shall be conducted simultaneously. All Age relay teams for 10 years, 11 years and 12 years events shall be combined at the discretion of the local organising committee. 13 years and Composite events be held simultaneously at the discretion of the organising committee. g) For Age relay teams 13, 14/15, 16/17 and 18/19 years events, States may substitute athletes from another age group into its nominated relay team provided that: I. the relay being contested is for an older age group than that contested by the athlete in a cross-country event. II. the substitution does not affect the representation of the state in the younger age group. III. the athlete being included was not one of the first five representatives of that state to complete the cross-country event for his/her division except where that state is unable to be represented by a relay team in the younger division. h) Athletes not nominated to represent their state in its age relay teams for 10 years, 11 years, 12 years, will be given the opportunity to compete in the Composite Relay, which shall consist of a race comprising six (6) athletes per state (one from each age/gender division). i) Athletes not nominated to represent their state in its official relay teams for 14/15, 16/17 and 18/19 events will be given the opportunity to compete in a Time Trial, which shall consist of a race covering one leg of the appropriate relay course. j) The Time Trial for each age group shall be conducted simultaneously with other age groups of the same gender. All time trials will be conducted after the relay events. k) Athletes competing in Time Trial events must compete in the same age group as they did for cross-country events. l) Relay events for a particular gender shall be scheduled prior to the Time Trial for that gender and the Composite Relay. m) A relay or time trial shall not commence until all competitors have completed the previous event. n) The Organising Committee shall determine starting positions for each relay and time trial. o) Each age group 13, 14/15, 16/17 and 18/19 years events contesting a relay will be provided with a separate start/finish line and changeover zone. In the 10 years, 11 years and 12 years relays a single start/finish line will be used depending on how the event is organised. 2.7 Uniform a) Each athlete must wear the correct uniform of his/her state when competing and when being presented with a medal/award. b) States may wish to designate a selected group of athletes to wear the principal uniform of that state. If so, the state concerned must make arrangements for other athletes representing that state to be uniformly attired i.e. individual, school or club costumes are not permitted. This does

21 not apply to athletes representing their school only during the international selection trial. Suggested options include the wearing of different coloured shorts, reverse singlet colours, etc. c) To permit officials, spectators and competitors to identify athletes properly, each state should ensure that its competition uniform is designed in such a manner that it is clearly distinguishable from other states. d) School Sport Australia will maintain a register of state competition uniforms. States are required to notify their current uniform design. e) The Host State will allocate each competitor a unique registration number. f) The Host state will provide each competitor with two bibs, each bearing the registration number of the athlete, and pins, etc. to attach the bibs to the athlete s uniform in accordance with IAAF requirements. g) Any regulations concerning footwear or length of spikes, which may be applicable to the course/venue, must be notified to competing states. Athletes in events 13 years and under are not permitted to wear spikes. h) The host state should provide baskets for each state/territory in the call room for the easy transfer of runners gear. 2.8 PRESENTATIONS / TROPHIES a) One each of gold, silver and bronze medals will be presented to athletes finishing first, second and third in each cross-country race. b) Gold, silver and bronze medals shall be presented to all teams finishing first, second and third in each age cross-country race. c) Gold, silver and bronze medals will be presented to teams finishing first, second and third in each relay race. Six (6) each of gold, silver and bronze medals shall be presented to teams finishing first, second and third in the Composite Relay race for 10 years, 11 years, 12 years, 13 years. d) A gold medal will be presented to the athlete from each age/gender division who completes the Time Trial course faster than other competitors in that age/gender division. e) Gold, silver and bronze medals shall be presented to members of individual school teams finishing first, second and third in the years when this event is held. 2.9 CROSS COUNTRY TROPHY A perpetual trophy will be awarded to the state aggregating most points in all age groups in the Cross- Country team races. Points will be awarded according to the following table: 1st place = 8 points 3rd place = 6 points 5th place = 4 points 7th place = 2 points 2nd place = 7 points 4th place = 5 points 6th place = 3 points 8th place = 1 point In the event of a tie, joint winners will be declared. g) Relay Trophy A perpetual trophy will be awarded to the state aggregating most points in relay races.
