1 June 2015 Vol.19 LAPD Newsletter Club Champs Once again we failed to capture top spot in Division 3 despite some great individual efforts in trying conditions. The points scoring was led by the girls this year with top 30 finishes by Annie Simmons (2 nd ), Jane Cooper (3 rd ) and Lilian Molesworth (6 th ), the boys also pitched in with Ben Hill (14 th ), Kevin Dixon (20 th ) and Peter Possum Richards (26 th ). Everyone who competed registered a point (12 of us) and the 7 volunteers accumulated 16 points between them. All in all giving us a total of 143 points, placing 17 th ooutright and 3 rd in Division 3 (20 points ahead of the team of 26 from Balance). Topping Div 3 were Forster (226 points from 20 racers) closely followed by Jervis Bay (218 points from 15 racers). Looks like we need more fire power heading up to Forster next year if we want to be competitive. Also decided in Forster was the Mark Samuels Trophy where the head to head battle with Hills was split evenly at 4 each so it came down to president v president. LAPD president (me) had established a solid lead of 1:41 out of the water, at this point Hills president (Tommy) started to charge, claiming back 17 seconds in T1 and another 53 seconds on the bike, then a rookie error in T2 saw a 31 second advantage turn into a 1:09 deficit (couldn t find my bike rack) heading onto the run. Tommy continued to surge away taking another 23 seconds over the run leg to finish the victor by 1:32 and leaving me to lament the 1:40 turnaround in T2 that could have made all the difference. Club Champions With 2014/2015 racing done it is time to tally up the scores from the 28 races LAPD have participated in this season and see who comes out on top, the results will be revealed at the LAPD Club Presentation Night on August 15 th. 3 LAPD Duathlons Although Duathlon 1 was cancelled due to moist conditions the remaining races should be pretty exciting with a revised run leg and 6 different juniors distances for the littler athletes out there. Duathlon championship points will follow the same format as last year with points for improving over the next 4 races as well as winning, this format will also apply to the juniors divisions over the 3 races that have been scheduled. Place Points Involvement Points 1 st 5 Participating 1 2 nd 3 Improved time 1 3 rd 2 Action at the duathlons could also be bolstered by the impending world championships in Adelaide this October with local athletes tuning up for a crack at a title Running The crew at Westies Joggers had a great turn out at their new event, The Georges River Festival of the Feet, featuring race distances to accommodate everyone (3, 7, 14 & 21 km), with numbers around 500 they should be pretty pleased with themselves, top spot for the 21 km run went to the Molesworths with Tim laying down a 1:20:00 and Kona bound Lilian 3 rd outright in 1:28:36, as predicted in the last newsletter westies put on a good day down at Lake Gillawarna so keep the Festival of the Feet in mind for next year Lean, mean and ready to race Team Molesworth

Race one of the National Qualifying Series (for world champs in Mexico) is, correction was, Townsville Triathlon Festival, June /2016 Championship races The determination of Club Champions for the 2015/2016 season remains the same as in recent years with all triathlons being allocated a ranking according to the criteria set by the committee (a combination of the level of competition at the race, the historical importance of the race to LAPD and races that LAPD identify as deserving the clubs support). The points allocated to each race are divided into 2 categories, 80% for performance (race time) relative to the first place finisher and 20% for performance (finishing position) relative to LAPD competitors. For key LAPD races (Club Champs, Nepean, Huskisson Long Course, 70.3 Western Sydney and Ironman Australia) the finishing position points are only available to people who race in LAPD club uniform (or at least a good proportion of the race). In an effort to support other tri clubs in our area and increased championship points allocation will go to selected Hills, MacTri and Hawkesbury club triathlons, dates to be determined.

Go Natural starts with a road bike leg from Akuna Bay to West Head and back so you need to be ready to go early if you don t want to get dropped on the first climb. A flat water paddle from Akuna Bay to Apple Tree Bay follows but be wary as conditions can be tricky if the wind is up. 12 km of trail runs in the national park take you up and down the local walking trails and back to the finish. Gloucester starts on the mountain bike, traditionally the first 5 km on the bitumen is a criterium like smash fest up front until the off road trails start and then it gets interesting, a redesigned course may see all that change this year but you can bet it will still be equally hard and fun. The paddle down the Barrington River varies from year to year depending on the water level but you will always need both white water skills and flat water power to get through this leg fast. A deceptively tough cross country run leg back to town sees a grandstand finish at the sports centre and a festival atmosphere. Anyone who is thinking of getting into this style of racing should get in touch with Ben so he can tell you that you are too soft and should stick to something easier like cage fighting
