Behind the leadership of senior Branden Fuller, the s finished seventh at the Big Sky Conference Championships with 145 points the second best point total in school history. Fuller placed third at the meet with a time of 24:23 on the five-mile course, improving on his 2003 performance of 19th. At NCAA Regionals, Fuller ran the 10,000-meter course in a time of 31:05 to place 22nd overall, just missing a return trip to the NCAA Cross Country Championships. In 2003, he became the first male runner ever from Eastern to make it to the national meet (NCAA Div. I) as he was given an at-large berth after placing 18th at regionals. He placed 132nd out of 256 competitors and was the first Eastern athlete to run in the meet since Amber Johnson in The men s team as a whole finished 14th overall with 368 points at regionals, beating the previous year s performance of 17th. I thought the guys had a pretty good season, said head coach Dan Hilton. The conference finish wasn t as high as we would have liked. I think it was because the conference was deeper all the teams were pretty good this year. It showed at the Regional Championships when we placed 14th, which was probably one of the highest finishes that we have ever had. We were a pretty decent team. Next year it is going to be a brand new team basically on the men s side, said Hilton. We are losing our No. 1 and 2 guys as well as (James) Conrick and (Kevin) Reed. But we have two freshmen, Shaun Helm and Curtis Kincaid, who have done pretty good. Our job now is to go out and find some new guys to come in we have to recruit. So it will be a rebuilding year next year, but hopefully it will be the start of something good. 11 WOMEN S CROSS COUNTRY Plagued by Injury, Women Improve on Last Season T h e E a s t e r n Washington University women s team returned a young squad consisting of all but one of their top six runners from the 2003 season. Despite their age, the women s team finished seventh in the conference with 167 points. Leading the way was sophomore Holly Evans, who placed 17th on the three-mile course in a time of 18:13 to improve on last year s finish of 25th place. At regionals, they finished 18th with 546 points, improving on last year s finish of 20th. Leading the way again was Evans, who placed 89th in a time of 22:46 on the 6,000-meter course. Second place on the team went to junior Nicolle Clutter, who finished in 98th with a time of 22:58. Other EWU finishers were Amy Jo Perreault (101st, 23:00), Caitlin Prunty (113th, 23:03), Kiri Garruto (155th, 24:08) and Sally Wittwer (162nd, 24:21). During the season, the spotlight was shared as Eastern had three different No. 1 runners -- Camille Gibb, Evans and freshman Amber Nickelson. Gibb was EWU s featured runner until she was sidelined by an injury halfway through the season. This is when Evans stepped up to be Eastern s top runner in the last four races of the season. On the women s side we basically lost our No. 1 and 3 runners to injuries (Gibb and Nickelson), which really gave us a pretty good blow, said head coach Dan Hilton. If you lose both of those runners, then you are really hurting because now your No. 6 and 7 runners are scoring in their place. So it s a huge turnaround in points. But sometimes that s just the way it goes. The good news is that next year we are only losing Caitlin Prunty and Amy Jo Perreault, but the core is back with Gibb, Evans, Clutter, Garruto, and Wittwer. I think everyone is figuring out what it takes to be good and understands now. If they get the miles in and work their aerobic systems, they will be pretty good. It is looking positive for the women s side next year.
