1 5 Pentathlon Adventure and Iron Chef Challenge Coaches Information Welcome Coaches! Thank you for participating in the 17th Annual Fresno County Office of Education Pentathlon Adventure and Iron Chef Challenge scheduled for Saturday, April 11, 2015 at The Big Fresno Fair Race Track and Industrial Building. Iron Chef Information can be found in a separate attachment. Check-out the Pentathlon Adventure Trailer on YouTube: You can also search YouTube for FCOE Pentathlon and the channel will be the first search item that appears on the list. PENTATHLON ADVENTURE EVENT INFORMATION STATIONS 1. Survivor Adventure Challenge Multi-skill obstacle course 2. Fast Fuel Push up shuffles, medicine-ball twist, and air squats 3. Team Power-Pull 20 meter weighted sled pull (35-45 pounds) 4. Plyo-Mid Challenge Agility course 5. Shuttle Run 3 by 10 meter run, tractor tire flip a. Create a Plate - Students will collect food items at station to create a healthy plate TEAM BREAKDOWN Health Nuts Fitness Fanatics 2/5 th grade girls 2/5 th grade boys 2/7 th grade girls 2/7 th grade boys 2/6 th grade girls 2/6 th grade boys 2/8 th grade girls 2/8 th grade boys TIMED SCORING o The clock begins at the start of each Heat and stops when team crosses the finish line EVENT FLOW o Teams are placed in Heats and rotate from station to station o Navigators and runners will help guide teams throughout the race (Coaches this is a great opportunity to run with your team!) HEALTHY CREATIONS CURRICULUM o The curriculum prepares students for the race. Bring completed copies with registration information the day of the race AWARDS CEREMONY o 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd place awards presented to: Health Nuts and Fitness Fanatics o Awards will be given out during closing ceremony

2 TEAM REGISTRATION o Complete the Team Registration Form by Friday, March 27th and to Esther eedwards@fcoe.org or Fax to (Student names are not required until the day of the event) o Registration: 7:30 am 8:30 am o 2 Forms are required the day of the race A liability and picture release Fresno County Office of Education form Anthem Blue Cross form (Spanish versions are available upon request Both forms will be signed by their parent or guardian and handed-in with Team Registration the morning of the event No signatures = No participation o Students will remain seated in the Gazebo area while coaches complete registration. Navigators/runners will help with students ADDITIONAL INFORMATION o No Entry Fee and all Parking is Free! School Busses and other transportation will park in the parking lot off Kings Canyon Avenue o Each participant will receive a Pentathlon T-shirt that will be handed-out along with their goody bags at the end of the event. Please be prepared with student sizes: small, medium, large and extra-large o Breakfast is the most important meal of the day! Remind students to eat a healthy breakfast before arriving. Snacks will be available for team participants, coaches and volunteers only. You might want your team to pack nutritious snacks and a lunch o Water will be available and conveniently located throughout the Race Track o A Medical Team will be on duty throughout the event. 3 WALKING PLANKS Start in standard plank position on hands and toes (push-up position) Next lower your right bent arm down to your forearm and then your left arm Place your right hand on the ground and begin to push your body back up, as your left hand does the same Repeat until you have completed 5 total BOX JUMPS Perform 5 box jumps from standing position facing the box Competitors will: o Either jump or step-up onto the box with both feet, then stand-up, raise both arms over head and either jump or step down (this qualifies as one box jump or step-up) o Continue until you have reached 5 total NARROW ROAD Competitors will walk across the balance beam If the student steps off the balance beam they must get back-on at the spot, where they stepped off, and continue OVER THE FENCE Competitors will climb up and over the fence TIRE STOMP OUT Students will single-step forward performing high knees, moving through the tires TOWER OF POWER Students will climb up and over a pyramid of constructed bales of straw

4 MEDICINE BALL TWIST Competitors responsibilities: o Line-up in 2 lines of 4 members standing back-to- back o Start with one member passing a medicine ball, waist level, to their right and continue until the ball reaches the starting individual. The starting individual will perform a military press overhead and repeat the process this time turning to the left and continue to pass the ball until it reaches the start of this exercise o Complete the exercise once the medicine ball has traveled in both directions PUSH-UP SHUTTLE Competitors responsibilities: o Begin by performing a push-up at the first poly-spot and shuffle to the next poly spot in a push-up position and perform another push-up o Continue with this movement until each Student has reached 4 poly spots and completed 4 push-ups AIR SQUATS Competitors responsibilities: o Begin in an upright standing position squat down, touching bar with their derriere located behind them and return to standing position o Count this movement as 1 repetition o Complete 20 total repetitions

5 HURDLE HUSTLE Competitors will hurdle bound 5 hurdles. To successfully perform a hurdle bound, participant will: o Jump over hurdle sideways with both feet together in flight and land with both feet together. Students will continue to jump in between hurdles until they reach the end of the hurdles o There will be no hopping, skipping, galloping, leaping, or any other motion that is not consist of a jump o If a participant does anything other than a jump, with 2 feet, then the participant will return to hurdle and perform the jump correctly LADDER UP Competitors will approach and face the ladder This challenge has students single stepping with high knees as they touch each ladder square inside and outside before proceeding to the next square. The challenge is completed once the movement is repeated down the ladder BEAR CRAWL Each team member will body crawl forward under a twine net The distance of the crawl is 15 meters LUG THE JUG Each competitor will carry two 1 gallon water jugs 20 meters forward and back for a total of 40 meters.

6 Competitors Responsibilities: o Divide themselves into two lines of four o Standing in a single file line, one line of students will travel forward to spot indicated and line-up facing their team o Wearing a harness, the first team member will proceed forward pulling the weighted sled towards their teammates. o Each team member will take their turn pulling the weighted sled forward. 5 th & 6 th Grade teams will pull 15lbs, 20 meters 7 th & 8 th Grade teams will pull 25lbs, 30 meters

7 This challenge will measure Speed, Agility, Strength, and Coordination Students will proceed forward to Create a Healthy Choose MyPlate Here are your 2 stations: Shuttle Run and Tire Flip SHUTTLE RUN Competitors responsibilities: o Begin at A cone, travel to B cone, touch the cone on top before heading back to A cone o Once back at A cone, participate will touch top of A cone and sprint forward to the Tire Flip o Students will wait for all teammates before proceeding to the Tire Flip TIRE FLIP Cones are set at a distance of 10 meters apart All team members will start together, however only four of the eight will flip the tire forward as the other four run beside their teammate Once the destination has been reached, the other four members will flip the tire back to the starting point Next up - Create a Healthy Choose MyPlate

8 Create a Healthy Choose MyPlate Eat Smart To Play Hard Use MyPlate to help you fuel up with foods from each food group. Upon completion of the Shuttle Run, teams will run forward to the Create a Healthy Choose MyPlate station. At this station students will work together, to complete the task of creating a healthy plate. (Please note this station offers many opportunities for a new student to step-up as the leader during this challenge.) BREAKDOWN: 1) One team member draws a slip of paper from a bag, returns to team, and reviews what is written on the paper 2) A new team member will collect requested items from large hula hoop, place items into a bucket and bring the bucket back to team for assessment. 3) Station lead will review contents 4) If correct, a new team member will write each item onto a separate post-it. The post-it color must match the corresponding food-group section of the Choose MyPlate big board a. Example: picked green beans would be written on the green post-it and placed in the vegetable section on the big board 5) The station lead will have final approval. If the items are incorrect a new team member must repeat the process until station lead approves. Once given, the team will pick-up a rope, hold the rope together and sprint to finish line.
