2 MMA 253 MAY 2017 There was a disappointing turnout for the AGM (14!) from a membership approaching 600. There are still vacancies to be filled as readers will see from the list. We welcome General Secretary, Jill Lamb, and Minutes Secretary, Kate Satterthwaite, and hope they will enjoy working for MMAC Arrangements for the Track & Field Championships at Nuneaton in June are well in hand and we look forward to a successful summer season for all our members. ********** *********** ************** ************ ************* **** Report on Annual General Meeting held at YHA headquarters, National Forest, Moira 23 April 2017 Following the cross country relays, the AGM took place and the report from the Chair and acting General Secretary, Irene Nicholls, is reproduced in full. A report from Treasurer, Martin Wilkinson indicated that the financial position of the club is healthy. Subscription rates and entry fees will remain unchanged for the coming year. 3 Report from the Chair AGM 2017 My thanks to everyone who has helped this year to keep our Club viable. It has been touch and go at times but we have, I the main, managed to fulfil our brief and provide competition in all disciplines to our members. Yes, that is our raison d etre, to provide competition. Once or twice we nearly had to pull the plug on events such as the Cross Country and the Track & Field Championships but we got by with the help of a dedicated band of helpers who stepped forward. Thank you to our supportive officials and clubs without whom we could not operate. The enthusiastic support of athletes who enter to enjoy their sport is commendable and there is a small number who are able to combine competition and officiating without compromising their performance. However, without the time consuming administrative support of your committee the Clu will soon be in v ery great danger of collapse. We are grateful for offers of help but it is difficult sometimes to process these without some idea of the interests ad background experience of folk. Most of our members participate with their Open Club and have perhaps helped to organise some events or have transferable skills. Perhaps you have some knowledge of race organisation which would be useful with the Cross Country, perhaps you are good with communication which might help with recruiting officials. The Track & Field Championships require a great deal of work behind the scenes. Entries collated in order that a programme can be prepared and printed and officials notified. Liaison with the Stadium to check facilities and equipment and these monitored on the day. I am so grateful to Elaine Mee, Vivienne Kirkland and Phil Owen, who, when we were on the verge of cancelling the T&F for 2017, came forward to find officials for the event. However, the lack of specific cross country and track and field secretaries to lead and develop teams who can move the events forward year on year is beginning to take its toll and with the best will in the world we cannot continue with this crisis management. We are also in need of a General Secretary* to deal with the small number of meetings and administrative requirements. (*At the AGM Jill Lamb was elected to this post). The past year has highlighted the need for assistants in the various roles. Illness and accidents have placed a strain on the Newsletter Team and we thank them for their continuing to keep us in touch in times of personal difficulty. Margaret is retiring as Minutes Secretary after many years of sterling work, my personal thanks to her for her support. We welcome Kate Satterthwaite to the team. Graham and Jill Lamb have added their talents to our committee and Graham has taken on the Membership Secretary s mantle with seamless ease, his report indicates the satisfaction of the membership, thank you to you both. Martin Wilkinson, our outgoing President and Treasurer, has been a tremendous personal support to myself and the club. His wise counsel and oversight of our financial affairs leaves us in a very healthy state and his report makes for most encouraging reading. Our incoming joint Presidents, Lynn and Julie Bellfield, have been members of the team for a number of years and we hope that they will enjoy their term in office. Thanks to our athletes for their support for our events and congratulations on your successes in the Inter Area events and at national and international level. We are proud of you. Congratulations also to Angela Copson BEM who joined us as a very inexperienced athlete few years ago and has subsequently progressed to world beating performances. What a role model. This will be my last year as your Chair, if elected. I have been very privileged to be involved in your world of athletics but I think the time has come for a younger and physically stronger leader to take your great club forward. 6 The following was received by Irene Nicholls:- I have just come down from the high of running the London Marathon 2017 as the Midland Masters Club entrant. I wanted to thank you and the club for allowing me the club place and can I say how grateful I am to have been through that experience. Running a marathon is one thing but London is one of the best in the world and I enjoyed every minute of the day. The race is so well organised, the crowds are so uplifting and the atmosphere is emotional and incredible. I have had the greatest time and managed to cross the line with a time of which I was happy with for a 56 year old male. I will always remember this race and the feelings it gave me. Thank you so much. Tony Jeffs :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: THE FOLLOWING APPEARED IN THE OLDIE MAGAZINE AND WAS SUBMITTED BY ROGER SIMPSON Jim White, Sporting Correspondent, expressed his thoughts on modern sport. He had witnessed the Parade of Heroes in Manchester at the civic celebration of those who had illuminated our summer in Rio. BBC Reporter, Matthew Pinsent was interviewing Olympic and Paralympic medal winners about their summer of fun. Things had changed since 1996 when Steve Redgrave and Matthew Pinsent had won Britain s only gold medal in the summer Olympics. This time, to accommodate the 244 Olympic and Paralympic medallists, it required fourteen flat-bed trucks. In Rio there were 27 times as many Olympic gold medals won as there were in Atlanta. There was the women s hockey team, taekwondo champion Jade Jones, gymnast Max Whitlock. On another lorry were the Brownlee brothers and the smiling assassin of the boxing ring, Nicola Adams. Nick Skelton the great showjumper who never gave up on an Olympic ambition, first seeded forty years ago. From Danny Willett trying on the green Masters jacket, through Chris Froome winning the Tour de France to Andy Murray storming to the Wimbledon title, our men and women have succeeded everywhere, benefitting from the two-decade long financial backing of the Lottery Yet for me, despite all that triumph, the single most extraordinary sporting achievement of the year from a British competitor was a performance which, far more than even the great, giddy glories of Rio, Wimbledon or the National Golf Club, did what true sporting excellence should do: it makes us all feel a little bit better about ourselves. It came on the streets of Toronto from a man who didn t even win the event in which he had entered. Ed Whitlock finished this year s Toronto marathon about halfway down the field in a time of 3 hours 56 minutes and 3 seconds. Which may not sound that exceptional until you learn that Ed is 85 years old. And his sub-four hour time smashed the previous fastest for someone in the age group by more than half an hour. In fact, so amazing was his time, so light footed his running gait that somebody should check his dental records immediately. And brilliantly, his initial reaction on crossing the line was one of disappointment. He had been aiming for a time of around 3:50, but was slowed, he said, by heavy legs in the final mile. Which is one better than most of us who attempt to run such distances: we tend to be slowed by heavy legs from the first mile. Thus it was that in a year of unsurpassed sporting glory, it was an oldie who gave us the most eye-popping performance. Ed Whitlock we salute you. Ack. To Jim White and the Oldie 6

7 1 0 0 years old Congratulations to JACK SELBY One of the founding members of MMAC (MVAC formerly), Jack Selby (Coventry Godiva Harriers) has reached the ripe old age of 100 born on 25 May 2017 still in fine fettle and living in the same bungalow he built in His father was a runner and his son, Jack, took an interest in running. In the beginning he was a sprinter but gradually moved to middle distance and by the late 1940 s he had transferred his initial interest in sprinting into marathon running! As his racing days dwindled he turned his attention to officiating. By the late 70 s early 80 s he had established himself as one of the first course measurers in this country, a service increasingly required by race organisers as the number of road races proliferated when more and more Fun Runs and Races were organised for a new breed of runner, which instead of the expected decline in interest actually increased almost exponentially. By this time Jack also became Godiva Club handicapper organising races to determine which runners would represent Coventry Godiva H. in the all conquering Manchester to Blackpool Road Relay and Bristol to Weston Road Relay (replaced by the Midland Road Relay and London to Brighton Road Relay (replaced by the National Road Relay.) A long distance swimmer who lived in Coventry wanted a new challenge and started to run no mean feat for 20 stones of blubber. Well before the jogging boom started he had the concept of RUN FOR FUN for the general public. Having met Jack they decided to start a jog group in a local park, Allesley, on a Saturday morning. This was 25+ years before the idea of Park Runs was conceived!!! This RUN FOR FUN metamorphosed into the Midland Veterans AC. Jack was a founder member and the first Secretary in One consequence of his Midland Veterans involvement brought the World Veterans Marathon Championships to Coventry a decade later, persuading the Coventry City Council to become involved - - no mean feat.. Jack s wife died just before Christmas, aged 95, both still living independently in the same bungalow. Although less mobile Jack still lives there. Carers come in regularly to see to his needs. He is fully compos mentis, going for coffee and cake most mornings with a neighbour who keeps a watchful eye out for him. We send congratulations and very best wishes from all the members of Midland Masters AC We are indebted to Jack s friend, since 1967, Colin Kirkham, for his help (MS) The start of the the Midland Marathon 1950 with Jack Selby just left of centre wearing the long sleeved rugby jersey under his Godiva vest.. 7
